On 7/17/09 from 4:00 Pm to 6:00PM, the Western Massachusetts 912 project (www.massachusetts912project.com) staged a protest of the National Health Care proposal working its way through congress and the "Cap-n-Trade" bill to be considered by the senate. We have noticed in the previous weeks that the public was surprisingly un-aware of information regarding these subjects; so this protest was also an attempt at educating the public.
We posted on all four corners and at the traffic islands with signs and literature, and as cars stopped for the lights we gave literature to any that asked. We did not disturb the flow of traffic at all. At approximately 5:00PM a South Hadley police officer approached us and told us that we were not allowed to talk to anyone in cars, distribute literature or cross the road. He then stated that we were a hazard because we caused traffic problems as he parked in the intersection and started directing traffic against the existing lights; the result was he caused traffic problems.
When we stated that we would cross the road, and we would exercise our right to free speech, he called his shift supervisor, he re-affirmed the first officer's position, and further stated that we were trying to tie up traffic and any crossing of the road would lead to incarceration for Breech of Peace.
We argued; he stated that his position was final and he posted an officer to babysit us. The irony is that a local television crew had their scanner on and we got attention that would have normally escaped us.

Are there examples of other groups using the intersection?
Sounds like a Civil Rights Lawsuit to me
Be sure to drive around and get video of panhandlers, begging for money.
not that I know of, but I had a thought to post some people on the traffic island with pro government signs just to compare the reaction.
As our government slides into tyranny, I'm hoping to see large scale civil disobedience (non-payment of taxes, among other things). Perhaps the police will long for the days when the only thing people did was stand by the side of the road and hand out literature.
I take it that the South Hadley Police haven’t really suffered under this economy. On the same day in New Bedford we demonstrated in front of Barney Frank’s Office. Of course we drew the New Bedford Police’s attention. They were terrific. Their ranks have been decimated because of Barney and friends. They let us go about our business. So maybe the South Hadley cops just haven’t felt the pain.
At least your protest got media coverage, ours was conveniently ignored.
Massachusetts? Ha, good luck!
I’m afraid the moron/normal ratio in that place is simply too overwhelming.
We protested outside of Olver’s office in Holyoke earlier in the day. The police let us be. This is the first time we have been disrupted by the police, they have been very friendly in all other locations.
Heh.. Are you aware that the judges in Massachusetts are even more corrupt than the regular politicians?
How many folks were with you?
As someone else said, the police do not bother the multitude of folks standing or sitting in intersections begging for money. Some of whom can't even bother to stay awake, and look as though they will fall into traffic right under a car if they aren't lucky.
Such a beautiful and historic area we have, too bad no one wants to acknowledge the historic lessons. Well, most don't.

We had about 20 people in attendance, we had a gentleman come from his home a couple of miles away and join us, many people asked for information and how to assist in the future.
Next Friday we will be at the rotary in Westfield from 4 to 6 PM
Thats why I believe we should have Criminal Defense Attorneys as Judge ProTem, and Prosecutor, and Juror for all cases where the Government or Government Agent is a Defendant.
Great! I know a lot of folks in the Hadley area who probably would be the type to have stopped. I will have to check in on the site and keep updated on this. I don’t live in Hadley, but have in laws that do and I do know it has been heavily infiltrated over the years, and it is sad to see. Our town is even smaller, and fortunately a lot more conservative, so far.
I will not be around next Friday, but something sooner or later would mesh.
Granted I have lived in western MA only about 7 years, and do not know the area that well, and no idea what the pol climate is in Westfield, but I wish you the best for your activities there.
Heads up. Mass is revolting!!

Slides into tyranny? We're already in a tyranny -- it just hasn't come into full force yet. This is just another local example; it's everywhere.
America -- a great idea, didn't last.

Dr. Jay Fleitman, Republican for Congress, Western Mass.
Is this Mr. Fleitman that I am communicating with? If so we have met a number of times: in Belchertown at the regional meeting/spaghetti supper, and in Boston at the tea party. It is nice to hear from you again, I hope all is going well with your campaign, we are actively seeking a candidate for Olver’s position now.
Bill
no this is Pete, Republican Connecticut
aka campaignPete R-CT
I do believe in Jay, however. As you can tell from my posts.
Do you know him personally?
an acquaintance. but he is an active member of in an organization that I belong to.
The Obama-press is playing the game of:
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody sees it, did it make any noise?
South Hadley is the site of Mount Holyoke College, the oldest continuing institution for higher learning for women in the United States (and the world). Not much happens there in the summer, since college is out. Am really surprised that the police gave a hoot. Since there’s hardly any traffic there at this time of year, there’s very little to disturb. It’s a very liberal institution these days and the police were probably answering some irate call from a faculty member still in town! (I’m an alumna of this institution.)
It was at the intersection of rtes. 33 and 202. Almost Chicopee. An intellectual looking person came by wagging his finger at us about twenty minutes before the cops got there.
Hadley is one of the small towns poisoned by the proximity of the U of Mass, a festering hotbed of treason, black racism, anti-self defense, violent lesbianism, and Stalinism.
