All Austinites may soon shoulder extra green energy costs
Asutin American Statesman ^ | 7.17.2009 | Marty Toohey

To meet ambitious renewable energy goals, city must find a way to pay for them.

Austin's electric utility could soon reverse a long-standing practice of selling wind, solar and other renewable energy only to customers who choose to buy it, four Austin City Council members and a mayoral aide said this week.

Austin is so stuck on trying to be *green*, they'll do anything and spend any amount of money to make it happen.

Glad I don't live there any longer. It was expensive to begin with.

I can hear the whineyass, ‘RAT liberals now. “Why can’t ‘the rich’ shoulder these costs?”

GreenChoice customers, like all Austin Energy customers, pay for the maintenance and upkeep of the city's coal plant, nuclear plant "and other facilities they don't get power from," Sloan said. "They're subsidizing power they don't buy, and they shouldn't be."

So, just provide power for the GreenChoice customers when the wind is blowing.

Austin is the hippie-dippie San Francisco of Texas. Many people are moving to suburbs to escape the insanity.

Not any more than in any other town, including yours.

Have you ever been there?..or do you just like to repeat hearsay?

Have you ever considered there are wonderful, loving Christian folks in Austin?....would that surprise you?

Did you know there are actual conservative, Reformed Christian churches in Austin?

Did you know this...?

I thought you should!

Maybe you should visit.

Or would you rather make generalizations?

Get over yourself, Gwenny. I was born and raised in Texas. The last time I was in Austin was on a class field trip August 1st 1966. A day Ill never forget. Were you there back then or is being a whiny twit something new to you?

also.....Is it possible you can conduct civil discourse without resorting to name calling?

I love Texas....
..I don't live in Texas, but someone dear to me does.

Yes, Austin is weird, but I don't think it rises to the level of calumny you depict.

I have loved the city of Austin most of my life. I was born 48 miles away in the tiny town of Smithville, and spent many happy hours of my childhood in Austin. At the present time, I live very close to the city of Austin.

The big problem with Austin is, IMHO, that it's run by a bunch of liberal activist kooks. Otherwise, it would still be a great city.

One more thing: I've always had to wonder at anyone who lives there wanting to 'KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD". I suppose I've just never had the desire to live in a weird city.

Calumny? I must confess that I had to look up that word. Since it’s no a secret that Austin has more than its share of chutney ferret bung bugler pillow biters I think the better word for you to use would be hyperbole.

Mmmmmmmm - Zimmerhanzel BBQ. The chicken alone is worth the trip!

Sure, it's run by liberals....

I simply objected to DogBarkTree's assumption & generalization of the whole town....!!

OMG! You know Zimmerhanzels? Is that not the best Barbeque in the entire country! To me, all the rest misses the mark.

That family has been in the barbeque business in Smithville for as long as I can remember---at least since the 40's.

I now live over in Lakeway, so it's a little over an hour's drive over to Zimmerhanzeils, but we manage to make the trip every couple of weeks, when we get hungry for some of their 'Q and fixin's.

As I said, I love Texas....
..I love everything Western...

..and one of my biggest thrills was seeing the actual Chisholm Trail wagon tracks that run through Brushy Creek at Round Rock (a suburb of Austin, of which I'm sure you know)

DBT, when all those 'rump rangers' --as you call them....are long gone, those ole wagon tracks will still be there

..and that's the real legacy of Austin!

The Salt Lick is not even in the same league as Zimmerhanzel’s IMHO.

Keep in mind that they are only open for lunch--and they close when they run out of meat.

It's all good, but the ribs and sausages are my favorites!

Don't expect any amenities--They use lots of white meat-wrapping paper, and it's a bare knuckles place--formica topped tables, etc. Their sides are also good.

I'm terrible with directions & I'm even worse with names, but I think I've been to this place....several years ago.

I was a little daunted....it looked like a ramshackle little thing...

..and inside it was as you described...bare knuckles....meat wrapping paper and a roll of paper towels on the table...

..amazing & delicious though.

Problem is, they are closed on Sunday-LOL!

It's a fun town to visit--if you like old architecture. Of course the shops on Main Street are mostly "antique" shops now. (Speaking of which, sometimes when I'm over there, I'll browse through a few of them. I hit the buy of the year not long ago--a wonderful pistol holster made of stingray skin with an inlay of mother-of-pearl. Cost: $7.00! )

If you google Zimmerhanzel's, Smithville TX, a map will come up.
