New clues emerged yesterday show ing just how much damage the Democrats' health-care plans will do to America's economy.
(Warning: This subject may make you, uh, sick -- and good luck finding a doctor if the plans pass.)
Start with comments from Douglas Elmendorf, the director of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office: The Senate's plan "significantly expands the federal responsibility for health-care costs" -- even though President Obama and his fellow Dems claim to want to reduce costs.
The CBO puts its price tag at some $600 billion over the next 10 years. The House scheme could run to $1.5 trillion.
No wonder massive tax hikes, as we warned yesterday, are needed. The national average top federal-state income tax rate, the Heritage Foundation notes, would hit 52 percent -- more than in France, Germany, Great Britain and numerous other countries. (The city's top rate soars to nearly 60 percent.)
Yet the economies in those countries have lagged, largely because steep tax rates discourage investment, risk-taking and job creation.
And what a time to slow the economy: In New York, new unemployment figures are among the highest in years.
It gets worse: Without "savings" that Elmendorf says don't exist, tax rates will rise even higher.
Add to that the job-killing penalties on small businesses that don't provide health insurance -- and the country is looking at economic disaster.
What will America get for all that?
Government-run health care for all -- notwithstanding promises to the contrary from Obama.

An arm of the MSM "warned [us]"? What should have been a call to reveille above the fold, page 1 is given a sick, ailing gnat's bugle for a voice, partly covered over with an ACE Hardware ad. So much for CYA, NY Post.

What's in your future?
I have been on top of the details.
I have cancer and will be required under the house bill to have mandatory counseling about the expense of my treatment and the options to just die, mandatory, at intervals the govt deems necessary.
I am 67, a physician, working while I have chemo. THis bill makes me cry not just for me but for all of us. I anticipate massive retirements of MD’s,,unless of course they require we work.
Hubby, also a 68 year old working MD, says they won’t be satisfied until we are a slave class.
Any doc who can retire, will retire.
I have said and posted repeatedly that it doesn't really matter what the libtards do to healthcare, they can only make it worse. Unsustainable is just that and what we have now is essentially unsustainable and will be more so as more of us baby boomers have increasing needs. In a sense they are doing us a favor by making things worse faster so we can "get on to the next thing sooner" IMHO.
I suspect that "the next thing" will be "cash on the barrelhead" and that will certainly be a "mixed blessing". I saw Stossel on Glen Beck last night and they showed a segment from his upcoming work. He pointed out there is a place in Canada where patients can get an imaging study in 1-2 days and if surgery is indicated that will be done in a week or so. Unfortunately you have to be a dog to get that healthcare in Canada.
Just how that will look here in the (or what was formerly the) United States when we get there will depend on a lot of things that take place in the interval. I always go back to a movie I saw several times decades ago before I was a physician, "Doctor Zhivago". I suppose that is sort of a "worst case scenario" but if one prepares for the worst case one might survive and perhaps be pleasantly surprised.
God Bless.
Prayers for both of you and all of us.
With Cap and Tax and BO-Care, we will not be able to afford food or our mortgages. This will end in rebellion.
If the banking and auto bailouts are any indications both fees and total income will be subject to government review and control.
We all need prayers. I think of my grandchildren and shiver at what they wil think of docs who will become agents of the state or be driven out. We are from a medical family and I hate to think that they will lthink of me, their other grandparents and aunts and uncles and imagine we are all killers or deniers of care.
Our Country is changing so much so quick that I wonder if when my time comes and it is soon that I will willingly quietly go. So sad.
Thanks to all for prayers!!
