“”Val D’Aosta, 17 July (AKI) - Pope Benedict XVI fractured his wrist on Friday after a fall and was taken to a hospital in the northwestern Italian region of Val D’Aosta, hospital and Vatican sources told Adnkronos. Vatican reports said the pontiff fell and was taken to the emergency service of the Umberto Parini hospital, located in the Aosta Valley at 9.45am local time and was seen entering the hospital on foot, accompanied by his staff.

Benedict underwent a few medical tests “after a fall in the house where he is staying, of which the consequences do not seem to be worrying,” the Vatican’s press office head Father Federico Lombardi told Adnkronos.

“We will wait, however, to see the results of the examinations,” he said.

The pontiff is in the Val D’Aosta region, located in the Italian Alps for a 16-day vacation that began on 13 July.””

Hope he heals up quickly. The Pope is in pretty good shape in general. Too bad it had to happen while he was on vacation, although, in thinking about it, at least he has no heavy schedule to keep up with, so maybe if it had to happen, during vacation is probably a good thing.

Well, I don't know about that. I broke my foot a few years ago and not only walked into the hospital on it, I also walked all the way down the long corridor to the ER because everyone was rerouted due to construction at the hospital. I told them I didn't need a wheel chair. Stupidest thing I've ever done, lol. The Pope probably wouldn't do that, though. :-)

And I thought I was the only one who could have a broken bone and not know it. I had never broken anything in my life, nor had my kids, so I didn't recognize the severity of the situation. I'm glad to know I'm not alone. :-)

“”Pope Operated On for Wrist Fracture
Pope Benedict XVI Operated on After Falling Down and Fracturing His Wrist
Pope Benedict the XVI was operated on this morning to insert a couple of rods into his right wrist after the pope fell in his room early today and fractured the wrist, Vatican and hospital sources said.

The accident occurred while the 82-year-old pontiff was on vacation in the Alps according to Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi.

Despite the pain, Pope Benedict said mass as he does every morning and had breakfast before going a hospital in Aosta, Italy, said Lombardi.

The spokesman of the Parini public hospital in Aosta, Tiziano Trevisan, told ABC News that the Pope arrived at the hospital at 9:45 a.m. local time in his own car and went to the emergency room where his right wrist was x-rayed and he was given a full check up “which is standard procedure.” An x-ray to his right wrist revealed a slight fracture.

An Italian news agency, quoting hospital sources, said the pope asked to be treated like other patients – so he duly waited for his x-ray and for his turn in the operating room.

The pope was operated on to repair the fracture, Trevisan said. He said they were giving him “light sedation,” though heavier anesthesia may be given as the surgery progresses. According to hospital sources, doctors inserted two rods in the pope’s wrist and put it into traction.

“The pope is undergoing a reduction of the fracture, that will be done following normal procedure, since the pope is in good general health,” Trevisan told ABC News. He also said that hospital authorities hope to send the Pope home by this evening, so he can return to his summer chalet.

Lombardi, the Vatican spokesman, told ABC News that the consequences of the pope’s fall “absolutely do not seem to be anything serious,” and that do not pose particular concerns for his health. Lombardi told Italy’s ANSA news agency that he believes the pope will continue his vacation....””

WaPo has updated the article:

Pope has surgery after breaking wrist in a fall

AOSTA, Italy -- Pope Benedict XVI broke his right wrist in a fall in his chalet while vacationing in the Italian Alps and underwent successful surgery Friday, hospital officials and the Vatican said.

The operation was performed under local anesthesia and went well, said Tiziano Trevisan, a spokesman at the Umberto Parini hospital in Aosta. Surgeons operated on the wrist to reduce the fracture, a procedure to realign the broken bone fragments, he said.

A Vatican statement said the 82-year-old pope fell in his room in a nearby chalet overnight and despite the accident, celebrated Mass and had breakfast before going to the hospital.

Doctors took an X-ray of the pope's right wrist and found a fracture, Trevisan said.

From the Vatican Information Service:

POPE SUCCESSFULLY OPERATED FOR WRIST FRACTURE

VATICAN CITY, 17 JUL 2009 (VIS) - This morning Benedict XVI underwent surgery at the Umberto Parini hospital in the Italian town of Aosta for a fracture to his right wrist. He had suffered a fall last night in his chalet at Les Combes in Valle d'Aosta where he is spending a brief holiday.

The Holy Father arrived at the hospital at 9:45 a.m. this morning. "Even so", declared Holy See Press Office Director Fr. Federico Lombardi, "he celebrated Mass and had breakfast early this morning".

Later the Pope "underwent an operation to realign the fractured fragments and fasten them through osteosynthesis, using a local anaesthetic then applying a cast. The Holy Father's general condition is good" added the Pope's doctor Patrizio Polisca, specifying that "the Pope will return shortly to his residence".

The Pope waited and asked "to be treated like other patients-so he duly waited for his x-ray and for his turn in the operating room.

I can't help but think that this Pope captures what Jesus asked of Peter and his long line of successors, when in the last chapter of John,He said "follow me".

How different the world would be if the B/bishops would follow the Pope, who follows Jesus, and the priests would follow the B/bishops and the the remainder of us Catholics would follow the priests leading us back to the Father as one unified Body of Christ.

I sure wish they would at least turn themselves around and wear the vestments with the cross on their back at Mass. It was a regular reminder of what it's all about.

I love this Pope.

'Cause I'm Kurtis Blow and I want you to know
That these are the breaks.

Throw your hands up in the sky
And wave 'em 'round from side to side
And if you deserve a break tonight
Somebody say alright!
(All right) Say ho-oo!
(Ho-oo!) And you don't stop
Keep on, somebody scream!
(Owwwww!) Break down!
