Pope Benedict went to hospital on Friday in the northern Italian city of Aosta, near the mountain resort where he is spending a summer vacation, the Italian news agency Ansa reported.

Ansa, quoting hospital sources, said the pope walked into the hospital in order to undergo "check-ups". There was no immediate confirmation from the Vatican.

No, I am absolutely confident that the thread will be hijacked by those who say: "Good"

Not by me — and there’s plenty of room on the Plonker List for those who make merry at the Pope’s misfortunes.

Prayers up for the Holy Father, and a speedy recovery from all that ails him.

Yea but if reports are right he walked in the hospital. Very good as sometimes a persons hip breaks and causes them to fall. Sounds like that didn't happen at least which is good.

There are times, too, that the fall causes the hip fracture. You’re right that if reports are correct ( he walked into the hospital on his own power), The may not have sustained a fracture. The hospital would, I’m sure, want to x-ray and run whatever other tests are necessary to determine if there was a fracture. They might also want to determine if there is some “organic” cause of the fall (ee.g. strok).

I guess I’m a worry wart. I’m just hopeful that the Pontiff will be all right.

According to St. Malachy the 112th Pope will witness the end of the world.
The current Pope is #111.

Sometimes the fall causes the fracture yes but in elderly usually the hip break comes first. It sounds odd I know but I worked in a nursing home and it was common. If an otherwise stable on their feet person was suddenly found in the floor unable to walk you could about bet on it. I hope it's not serious.

Falls are potentially life threatening to the elderly. I’m glad it’s just the wrist. He should be ok. I’m not Catholic but I wish him the best and speedy recovery.

Sorry. I was thinking about my sister-in-law’s mother. She fell trying to get about without her walker. She did fracture her pelvis from the fall. She seemed to get better, but then complications set in and she passed on a couple of weeks later. She had been in remarkably good health for 92 years old. The walker was to aid her because she had arthritis. Maybe her arthritic condition contributed to her break???? I don’t know...should not be practicing medicine without a license.

With your confidence in mind, one might ask why you decided to post it?

One might ask

And I might answer that it is legitimate breaking news. And, although those who would hijack the thread would be loud, they would be in the minority.

From the Vatican Information Service:

POPE SUCCESSFULLY OPERATED FOR WRIST FRACTURE

VATICAN CITY, 17 JUL 2009 (VIS) - This morning Benedict XVI underwent surgery at the Umberto Parini hospital in the Italian town of Aosta for a fracture to his right wrist. He had suffered a fall last night in his chalet at Les Combes in Valle d'Aosta where he is spending a brief holiday.

The Holy Father arrived at the hospital at 9:45 a.m. this morning. "Even so", declared Holy See Press Office Director Fr. Federico Lombardi, "he celebrated Mass and had breakfast early this morning".

Later the Pope "underwent an operation to realign the fractured fragments and fasten them through osteosynthesis, using a local anaesthetic then applying a cast. The Holy Father's general condition is good" added the Pope's doctor Patrizio Polisca, specifying that "the Pope will return shortly to his residence".

As a sympathetic non-Catholic who is considering swimming the Tiber I can think of two excellent reasons:

1) to give opportunity to those of us who wish the Holy Father well to remember him in our prayers, and

2) to identify and Plonker List those who don’t.

The Pope is an elderly gentleman (in the truest sense of the word) and a fall — any fall — is a potentially life-threatening risk and a serious matter indeed, worthy of our sympathy and prayerful support, irrespective of our personal religious persuasions. I believe this should be taken into serious consideration by anybody with a mind to hijacking this thread.
