Explosions have hit two luxury hotels in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, say police reports. The country's Metro TV reported that one blast was heard and felt at the Ritz-Carlton and another hit the Marriott Hotel. At least three people were injured in the Marriott blast, the Associated Press quoted police as saying. One witness told Reuters some windows on the lowers floors of the Ritz-Carlton hotel had been shattered.

There are now reports that both bombs were inside the restaurants serving breakfast at 8am. These restaurants would have been packed with foreigners, mainly business people at that time. It is a new development that they have succeeded in getting the bombs inside the hotels, normally they drive into the security gates and blow up there.

Not good whatever way you look at it.

>>> It is a new development that they have succeeded in getting the bombs inside the hotels <<<<

When I was there in 2003 security at the hotels, the restos, the expat clubs, and the malls was pretty tight. I was always being wanded at the entrances, and sometimes had to open my briefcase.

I never felt unsafe (and I have been in combat situations).

Has that all slacked off?

No the security at all the big buildings is as tight as ever, but frankly every time I walk through it the security alarm bleeps and no one ever does a damn thing about it, I presume they reckon a foreigner isn’t really carrying a bomb.

If as appears to be the case the bombs were in the restaurants you’ve got to be thinking of some member of staff being involved and the explosives being brought in through the delivery areas which may not have such tight security.

Neither have we on occasion eaten dinner at some of the nicer hotels in the several country area. However, we usually stay in less pretentious hotels because, the luxury and deference shown in the five star hotels makes us uncomfortable. Jakarta has always seemed quite locked down since the Marriott bomb murders.

Fatal Jakarta Blasts: Top U.S. Terror Experts Point to al Qaeda-Connected Group

http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=8106157&page=1

Two former senior U.S. officials who dealt directly with issues of terror in Indonesia say the bombings in Jakarta today bear the trademarks of the al Qaeda-connected Group Jemayah Islamiya, whose top bomb-maker, Noordin Top, has been at large and feared preparing a new attack.

Authorities are looking for Noordin Mohammed Top in connection with two explosions in Jakarta, Indonesia. (ABC News)At least 9 people are dead and 50 wounded at two separate explosions at Ritz-Carlton and Marriott hotels, the Indonesian security minister told the Associated Press.

The bombings, in which twin bombs detonated at the Ritz-Carlton and Marriott hotels in central Jakarta, are suspected to have been coordinated by Top.

Former White House counter-terrorism chief Richard Clarke, now an ABC News consultant, said the virtually simultaneous attacks and current intelligence point to the involvement of Top, who he called one "He is one of the most wanted men in Asia."

Whenever these smaller attacks like this happen I always get worried.

I worry they’re a signal to sleeper cells for bigger attacks in other places.

IE: What happened in Afghanistan before 911.

Yeah, I think that too. I remember right before 9/11, there was a terrorist threat for South Korea. In addition, I remember how the media was focused on shark attacks, which there has not been any that I am aware of this year and a missing person case, that time Chandra Levy.

The third explosion seems not to have been a bomb, it is at a fish market and doesn’t really fit in with the pattern of the two bombs.

More indications that we are pack to a "law enforcement" model in foreign relations. We are after an individual criminal, not a terrorist organization JI. Pathetic.
