Why won't they let my son win the egg and spoon race?
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 16th July 2009 | Ursula Hirschkorn

Posted on 07/15/2009 7:18:31 PM PDT by naturalman1975

Early summer is sports day season and it seems as if we are living at my sons' schools, watching with pride as their little legs pump across the field, their eyes screwed up in concentration as they attempt to keep that pesky egg on the spoon.

But I find myself wondering why they try so hard when their teachers are so determined that there should be no winners, no matter how far a child streaks ahead of his classmates.

Last Friday was my five-year-old son Jacob's first sports day at his primary school, and when he powered over the finish line ahead of all his little classmates, he held his arms aloft and shouted 'I'm the winner', only to be taken aside and gently told by his teacher that there were no winners and it was all just a bit of fun.

His face fell as he felt as if he was being reprimanded for celebrating his success.

This misguided philosophy is meant to make it easier on those children who for ever trail in last, but that's an insult to their intelligence.

My son knew he had won the race, and so did all his friends. Telling him not to enjoy his moment of glory didn't make the slowcoach at the back of the pack feel any better - he was still last and everyone knew it - it just took the joy away from my son and made him wonder why he had pushed so hard to cross the finishing line first.

He was. That's the point. All too common in all too many schools.

Reprimanded, oui.

Although "punished" for success based upon individual hard work might be closer to correct.

It's the Marxist way.

Sounds eerily similar to a socialist economy....the capitalist business owner works his butt off to get the huge order...makes the huge profit...collect the huge payment...and gets taxed out of his shorts so he can pay for the lazy azz not looking to get employed by the thousands of jobs available because it’s beneath them....

This senseless attack on the best and brightest must stop!

The best and the brightest keep the world turning. The gifted carry a heavy burden, they make things work! They seek no special status, only that they be left alone to exercise their special gifts to the benefit of all.

It is a sick sort of madness that seeks to put them down. :-(

I saw a TV show once that was set in the near future. In this society every child was given a general intelligence test at the age of Thirteen. It centered around a young boy who loved science and to read.
Come test day his parents took him to the government center for the test and he was given a drug that would not allow him to lie. Some time later his parents received a call saying he had passed the test...And where to claim his body.

Yes, he was punished for his success.
The argument is that we don’t want the others to feel bad.

Well, growing up, I played 2nd string right field in our city’s park board sponsored little league. I was not very good-I knew it then and I certainly know it now. I played as much as I did because my mom had a Ramble Station wagon and could haul all of us around. When our team did well and when one player did a fantastic job I was excited as everyone else. My self esteem was not diminished when the team did well or one player was cheered to good pitching and so forth.
I think by recognizing someone who does well does not demean others who do less well. I don’t think kids believe it either. This is coming from the educational establishment.

the author shouldn’t bother complaining..the time to save her country is long past, the UK is already lost, and we are close on their heels.. we’ve got to deal with the same stuff over here, which is why every parent should pull their child out of public school and either homeschool or send them to private school. I am not a poor single mother, but I sacrifice rather than send my daughter to public school. If we all did that, someone might get the message.

This is a perfect example of the liberal teachers’ union pussifying our kids. If this was done back in the 30’s and during the Depression, what results would have come from that? Our citizens on the morning of December 7th, saying ‘well, we must have made the Japanese mad and we should just apologize for whatever we did or didn't do. World War II would have ended before it actually started, there would be NO Jewish people left on the face of the Earth and we would all be united in being good little Nazis.

All too common in our world.

We're supposed to be ashamed of being from the best country.

The underdog is to be considered the true champion.

Losers are in, because they're losers at the expense of the winners--which everyone knows means the United States generally and true Americans specifically.

Just look at the people and nations our president is buddying up to. He's bought in completely to "the evil imperialist America is responsible for every problem in the world" baloney.

That's what the worldwide Socialist brainwashing has brought us.

Loathing of success and individual achievement.

We're expected to accept being cogs in the wheel of mediocrity under the leadership of clueless megalomaniacs like Obortion .

Using classical libtard techniques, the mom should express her sadness that every employee of the school is too stupid to be able to understand or define the word race.

She should find opportunity to drone on and on about it at, say a local town council meeting and then post the same on YouTube. Mentioning teachers by name would help.

She should then have her child go tell all the school kids where to find it, and get all of them joking about it and making fun of the principal and teachers in class often.

It’s like the time when my little brother was playing little league ball back in the ‘70s in CT. The umpire was so f’in stupid he put his shin guards on upside down. Couldn’t call a strike if it was right down the middle, always balls. Libtard.

When my son was on the football team in high school, even if they scored and turned the game over in the last minute of play, they would get a penalty if they showed enthusiasm. It was called excessive celebrating. Nauseating.

That's a great attitude, and the attitude that we should be teaching our kids. We should also be teaching our kids against resentment towards the winners. Resentment is the cancer that's killing our culture, and has resulted in some of the Marxist changes that is happening to our nation.

And, of course, as a winner, we should be teaching our kids to be humble and gracious. And if your kid is really are gifted at something, have him/her watch Searching for Bobby Fischer.

It sounds like Examination Day from the 1985 Twilight Zone series. The original short story was by Henry Slesar.

They are trying to turn kids into non competitive and non judgmental wimps. Every kid wants to win but we can't all be winners. When you lost you kept your chin up because you knew you tried your best. Kids learn important lessons from winning and losing. Taking that away just prolongs the learning experience.

This crap happens in America too and at high school level. My daughter played water polo for four years, and by the fourth year, she and a few of her teammates (through outside coaching during off-season) became highly skilled players, but the high school coach during season demanded when they were ahead of the game that they sit down and let the bench play until the other girls caught up or came within one goal. He threw five or six games this season because of this cruel way of coaching and the starters who fought so very hard were left in tears, while the bench was as well because they were the reason they lost. My husband and daughter went in to complain to the athletic director about this and what happened? Well, my husband, who was a full-time substitute at the very same school (for the last four years) wasn’t called in again to teach. So the “coach who likes to lose” and likes to make girls cry is still running the squad and we are without an income. I hope things improve regarding water polo at college level for my daughter.

Look, with all due respect, I am absolutely sick of seeing people say this. Nothing is over until we say it's over, so quit giving up so easily. The UK isn't lost. If even half of the heartland British decided that they've had enough of this socialist PC BS, they could retake the country TOMORROW, by force if necessary. The same is true of the US. We are actually in much better shape because we have more of an insulated heartland. The day that real Americans decide that enough is enough, we can end all of this BS immediately. The ONLY thing that can stop us is if people turn into gutless quitters.

Why, it is just mind-numbing; educational 'dumbing'; egalitarian, politically correct 'sheeple education'! The 'reason-capable' recognize this; the mind-numbed, useful idiots do not. You may well not have any inluence in positive 'change' at your son's school; but hope you celebrated his success, 'big time' after he got home. . .Don't let them ruin him! Let your hand; rock this boy's cradle!

Liberal orchestrations of the national psyche; it's culture; it's meeting in dismal unfoldings; disclose a 'collective conceit' of the worst measure; and it is all just too pathetic. . .

I would counsel that parent to keep pushing and challenging the little boy. Explore his limits. Let him win as often as his efforts merit a win and endure a loss when his efforts don't measure up. That is the real world. Not the artificial, egalitarian world of the Marxist killjoys. Throttling back the challenges just leaves the maximum potential unexplored and untapped...and potentially wasted.
