The furore around the Chinese governments Green Dam software has raised the issue of the way modern technology is used to monitor our daily lives. Here, we list seven of the technologies that can be used to keep track of your movements.
CCTV
Closed-circuit television cameras were first used in Germany in 1942 to remotely monitor the launch of V2 rockets. Since then, CCTVs have become one of the most contentious pieces of technology in public use. The government and law enforcement agencies claim the use of video monitoring technology can help reduce crime and improve public safety; critics argue that the cameras serve only to displace crime to unmonitored areas, and do not act as a deterrent. With more than four million CCTV units in the UK, the network of cameras captures the average person around 25 times a day.

...1984 is here!
His dream has come true!
In Great Britain, they are beyond 1984.They have CCTV everywhere.
I think bing watches you...looked up something on Bing...and now I get e-mails about it...looked up diabetes for a friend...I get e-mails about diabetes now.....hmmmmmm
I dont like Bing!
I have to agree with the critics about CCTV not being a deterrent - unless our criminals are just a lot dumber than Brit criminals. Every evening news has at least one item about a crime with a picture of the criminal looking right into the camera. Not much of a deterrent, but it does make catching these idiots easier.
I’m not concerned about a company monitoring employee web use - who’s computer is it?
I’m not concerned about targeted advertising, if I have to put up with advertising it might as well be for something I’m actually interested in - but so far I’m not targeted. Not by mail or email.
I’m not concerned about having a GPS chip in my phone. I don’t need it, I’d never use it, and I haven’t activated it. If the chip can be monitored even if not being subscribed to if I dont want to be monitored I can simply leave it at home. I know several people with GPS in both their phones and cars - wow, they can now easily find the same stores and restaurants they’ve used for years. Whoopee. How many people actually need it? Some business travelers and a few vacationers maybe.
A true visionary! Laughing? LOL, I hope not! Spinning, sadly shaking his head. His predictions have indeed come true. And the 70's era fear that they would, have been replaced by those educated in the 60's and 70's, fearful of their loss of freedom, who put them in place. Woo hoo. (Of course, I sense you may have been expressing sarcasm...)
I think you have grossly misconstrued George Orwell’s motives for writing ‘1984’. He hated fascism, stalinism and authoritarianism with a passion. Even though he was a socialist....
