Catholics Hurl Firebombs at Belfast Police

BELFAST, Northern Ireland -- Militant Catholics hurled gasoline bombs, fireworks and other makeshift weapons at Northern Ireland police Monday in a failed effort to prevent a Protestant parade from passing through the bitterly divided north side of Belfast. An Associated Press reporter witnessed the crowd in the hard-line Catholic district of Ardoyne throw about a half-dozen Molotov cocktails at riot police. At one point, masked youths on store rooftops overlooking the road directed a deluge of objects on police lines. More than 100 officers in riot gear charged into crowds with shields and clubs. Three water cannons blasted rioters into side streets, clearing the way for the parade by about 1,000 Protestants from the Orange Order brotherhood. Several rioters and at least one officer have been injured. The parades — featuring so-called "kick the pope" bands of fife and drum playing a mixture of Gospel and sectarian tunes — are loathed by the Irish Catholic minority, which views the tradition as insulting and intimidating. Protestant parades and Catholic hostility to them inspired Northern Ireland's descent into bloodshed from the late 1960s to mid-1990s, when paramilitary cease-fires took root after more than 3,600 killings. Though the Orangemen are trying to modernize their image as less anti-Catholic, this year's parades in 18 cities and towns have nevertheless brought a surge in sectarian passions over the past week, with extremists on both sides vandalizing the other's most vulnerable homes, churches and community halls. Several of Monday's parades include circus-style entertainers and historically-themed floats. Orangemen have assigned officials to welcome tourists on parade routes, and central Belfast shopping centers are opening for the first time.

Well it is good to see the IRA is alive and well in Ireland. We may need them to help fight against Ahmed and Mohammad over in England.

This conflict has been successfully painted as a religious war. It isn’t. It is a fight to rid Ireland of the English and those loyal to London.

Either way the Orangemen use these marches as a way to shove it up the noses of Catholics and the RC’s are stupid enough to retaliate. The old saying you can’t fix stupid applies readily to both sides.

Off To Dublin In The Green

[print]
(Trad)
Oh, I am a merry ploughboy and I plough the fields all day
Till a sudden thought came to my head, that I should roam away
For I’m sick and tired of slavery since the day that I was born
And I’m off to join the IRA and I’m off tomorrow morn

And we’re all off to Dublin in the green, in the green
Where the helmets glisten in the sun
Where the bayonets flash and the rifles crash
To the rattle of a Thompson gun

I’ll leave aside me pick and spade, I’ll leave aside me plough
I’ll leave aside me horse and yoke, I no longer need them now
I’ll leave aside me Mary, she’s the girl that I adore
And I wonder if she’ll think of me when she’ll hear the rifles roar

And we’re all off to Dublin in the green, in the green
Where the helmets glisten in the sun
Where the bayonets flash and the rifles crash
To the rattle of a Thompson gun

And when the war is over and dear old Ireland is free
I’ll take her to the church to wed and a rebel’s wife she’ll be
Well, some men fight for silver and some men fight for gold
But the IRA are fighting for the land that the Freestaters stole

And we’re all off to Dublin in the green, in the green
Where the helmets glisten in the sun
Where the bayonets flash and the rifles crash
To the rattle of a Thompson gun

This is simply not possible. Everyone knows George Mitchell and Billyboy Clinton brought "peace to Northern Ireland" many years ago.

Hey at least they fight for their beliefs. Screw all these pansy Americans who are too scared to get in a physical altercation now and again.

That's very well put indeed.

Thanks for your reply!

I'm of Irish descent brought up as a RC - went to numerous Protestant Churches in my thirties. I have seen religion used as an excuse by bigoted people all my life and none of them have been able to justify their behavior using Scripture or their religion. Who would know stupid if not me - LOL. Blessings

I am of Irish decent...on my father's side. I was brought up Protestant, but converted to Catholic when I was 22. It was Belfast, Ireland in my house! Finally my grandmother put her foot down and reminded my father that we had relatives from BOTH sides of Ireland, including the Catholic side. My father was the kind that on St. Patrick's day he would go out and wear an orange sash.

Funny you should speak of bigoted people in the church...that is why I left the Baptist church..I had enough of their crap. I had enough of “everyone else is going to hell except us” attitude. Plus the fact that the more money you gave, the more you could get away with shit.

It truly saddens me that Catholic and Protestant fight in Ireland. They believe in the same God, it is not like Christianity vs Islam you know. I will tell you that I have felt the hate first hand. My old baptist preacher always said that “when you take up the cross and become a Christian you will be persecuted." I thought he meant my non-Christians not people who called them selves Christians. The day I became Catholic, the only people who attacked me were Protestants, and have ever since! At the time I had friends who were in Wicca and all they ask was "is anyone forcing you to do this?" to which I said "No" and they said "okay". Protestants however, tell me all the time how I "pray to Mary" or "I am going to hell" or that the "Pope is the anti christ". They bash a religion they know nothing of. Right now Islam is slowing trying to take over the UK and these protestants just had to go and do this? Do they not know that the day will come when they may need the Catholics and the IRA to help them fight the Taliban or Al Queada or what ever muzzie organization comes down the pike?
