Obama to probe response to mass killings (POTUS Accusing Advisors/Troops of Murder?)
UPI ^ | 13 Jul 09

Posted on 07/13/2009 8:18:41 AM PDT by xzins

ACCRA, Ghana, July 12 (UPI) -- President Barack Obama said he has ordered a probe of the U.S. response to mass killings of Taliban prisoners of war by forces of an American-backed warlord.

In an interview with CNN, Obama said the investigation would focus on reports the Bush administration resisted calls for a probe into the deaths of as many as 2,000 Taliban POWs in 2001, during the early days of the war in Afghanistan.

"The indications that this had not been properly investigated just recently was brought to my attention," Obama said during his visit to Ghana. "So what I've asked my national security team to do is to collect the facts for me that are known, and we'll probably make a decision in terms of how to approach it once we have all of the facts gathered up."

The Taliban prisoners had surrendered to the U.S.-backed Northern Alliance in late 2001, CNN said on its Web site Sunday night.

The New York Times, citing government officials and human-rights organizations, reported Saturday that Bush administration officials repeatedly discouraged efforts to investigate the mass killings.

The Times said officials from the FBI, the State Department, the Red Cross and human rights organizations had sought an investigation into the deaths but Bush administration officials were reluctant to investigate because the warlord, Abdul Rashid Dostum, was on the payroll of the CIA and his militia had worked closely with U.S. Special Forces in 2001.

Sources told the Times U.S. officials also expressed concern about undermining the government of Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, for whom Dostum served as a defense official.

Let ‘em investigate all they want then maybe his other initiatives, like healthcare and a second stimulus, and cap and tax in the Senate will go down the tube.

I don’t think we should jump to conclusions on this. As much as I mistrust Obama, I don’t think he has much choice but to at least gather information on this. I’ll save my criticism for any improper decisions resulting from such “information gathering”.

Sure. I can understand the FBI wanting to be involved in an investigation of Taliban deaths in Afghanistan.

Not.

I'd much rather think the FBI would want to investigate CNN's involvement in Iraqi torture deaths during the reign of Saddam Hussein.

And what does Barack Obama think he's going to do about it if they have their moronic "investigation" and find that the Northern Alliance did kill Taliban? Give Abdul Dostum a spanking and take his birthday away? Why don't they investigate the many thousands of people who were murdered by the Taliban for things like flying a kite - many of those people ethnic Uzbeks who lived in Northern Afghanistan? Why don't they investigate how the Taliban were permitted to grow and flourish and harbor a monster like Osama bin Laden under Bill Clinton's watch with nothing being done to stop it?

These people are abysmally stupid. They're going to screw up their little Afghanistan adventure and fall on their faces just like they have with the "stimulus" joke. Some things are better just left alone.

Watch the Obama poll numbers. The more they slip the greater the effort by Rahm and Company to put the focus back on Bush-Cheney. You can see it happening right before your eyes. But, IMHO, it’s a fool’s errand. This is Obama’s mess and he is going to get blamed for the bad economy and the bad results in the WOT whether he likes it or not. Bush Bashing is not going to work.

Oh, I agree that he's stupid. You can hear it every time he tries to talk without his teleprompter blankie.

It's just that he so often does stupid things that could be easily avoided. Investigating the deaths of Taliban? In a war against the Taliban?? In a war where he's advocated a surge against the Taliban?? Just dumb.

And you know it's to try to distract from his failures and sinking poll numbers. How exactly does anyone in his administration thing that this will increase his popularity? Incredibly dense.

Once again the Loons on the Left, the STATISTS, can not or will not read the GHC to find out and comprehend in accordance with the GHC what constitutes a POW. The Taliban do not meet the requirements of the GHC for POW Status.

Of course UPI wrote this so it is bound to contain errors, but I don't think the Talibans that surrendered were POWs. The Geneva Convention very clearly defines a POW characteristics. These persons (non uniformed combatants) were irregular combatants. What they rated was to be questioned and then be shot.

However, they will be painted as saints on a religious pilgrimage which were killed by the Evil US backed forces.

Rahm and Company are political whores. They will never take responsibility for anything. After eight years of Clinton ignoring Osama bin Laden, they blame Bush for 9/11. Then we have a show trial to cover Jamie Gorelick's butt for creating 'the wall' while she sits on the committee. Nothing is too absurd for them to try (and get away with it)!

His continued attempt to govern as if he is still a senator criticizing the Bush administration is getting really old.

My guess is that while in Ghana, Obama was handed a letter that read...

His Excellency and Most Honorable Son of Kenya:

I am a member of the royal family. Our family has been under investigation and we are trying to find a way to get our funds out of the country.

You have been mentioned as an honorable person, who is in a position to help us. We are looking for a person who can take receipt of $37.5 million dollars U.S. We would appreciate it if you would hold those funds for up to six months, until we can come to the U.S. to collect them back from you.

As a thank you, we are willing to leave 10% of those funds in your account, when you return the funds to us. There are only two things you need to do, to help us.

Please send us a $100 check so that we can determine your bank account number. We will then send the funds promptly. We would also ask that you investigate the maltreatment of Taliban members by the Bush administration. If you just check into that, we will send $70 million U.S. instead of the $37.5 million.

Please hurry. The Nigerian troops are at the door.

Thank you.

Mjomba Nibutu, Prince of Thieves

Postmarked 07/05/2009 Abuja, Nigeria

Of course Obama would believe anything that charged the Bush, Cheney, or the U.S. with a crime. Hence the need for an investigation.

And all that money...

By now the check is in the mail.

Ya gotta love policy probably driven by the fact that some liberal got around to reading Horse Soldiers during his summer vacation and got outraged.

For those who haven't read it, it's a pretty good book which covers the very early days of the SF folks on the ground, dealing with folks like Dotsum.

Thanks for the heads-up, xzins. Yes, I had seen this percolating out there over the weekend. From the article:

............."n an interview with CNN, Obama said the investigation would focus on reports the Bush administration resisted calls for a probe into the deaths of as many as 2,000 Taliban POWs in 2001, during the early days of the war in Afghanistan.".......

So, it seems Obama is interested in Bush's response? There won't be any forensics, etc. to conclusively nail any Taliban or Special Forces this far away from the incident. But they could build a case that with what they had at the time, maybe Bush should have done pushed for a probe. Anyway, that's my take.

We entered Afghanistan on October 7, 2001.

I remember it well because a number of anti-Bush freepers were screaming because it didn't happen fast enough after 9/11.

Whoever they were, they looked pretty stupid after the invasion and lightning quick removal of the Taliban from power. I'm glad I don't remember their screennames. :)

“Probe US response” = investigate, iirc, General Tommy Franks and his staff and organization and troops.

Have you learned nothing from the Haditha show-trials?

Is not this a way that the unscrupulous could rewrite the stunning ground victories in both Afghan and Iraq?

This is a load. Back then there were only about 100 "Operators" inside the country advising thousands of blood enemies to the Taliban. It's not Special Forces policy to allow such killings (according to my friends in that community) but sometimes stuff happens. What I'm saying is that I seriously DOUBT any U.S. personnel were directly involved in murder. This was an atrocity (or housekeeping, depending on your viewpoint) committed by HOST COUNTRY soldiers/freedom fighters. Our guys cannot be held to account for this. Except that liberals specialize in holding our soldiers accountable for everything not their fault. Then those same liberals will turn around and give the Taliban a "pass" for murdering Christians. Go figure. All I know is that for those folks who really believe what they're doing is right, I wouldn't want to be them when they stand before God.

The key is the phrase “probe US response.” That is the code under which they have prosecuted Lt Col Jeffrey Chessani since 2005 for the Haditha incident. Go to http:www.defendourmarines.com for the entire story of a sad episode in our history.

Our gov’t has persecuted Lt Col Chessani, and they STILL aren’t finished with him. His crime: supposedly “not responding” properly.
