Two Held in Murder of Florida Couple With 16 Kids Due in Court (Day Laborers)

Day laborer Wayne Coldiron, 41, turned himself in to Escambia County authorities and Leonard P. Gonzalez Jr., 35, was arrested in neighboring Santa Rosa County, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said.

Earlier Sunday, authorities charged Gonzalez's father, Leonard P. Gonzalez Sr., with evidence tampering. Police said the 56-year-old tried to paint over and hide damage on a red van that was spotted on surveillance video leaving the home where Byrd and Melanie Billings were shot to death Thursday. Eight of the couple's children were asleep in the house when the shootings took place.

“Morgan said the investigation involves a complex web of relationships between suspects, though he declined to elaborate on them. He said it did not appear that the suspects knew the victims. The younger Gonzalez and Coldiron are friends, the warrants said.

“We are very anxious to share this story ... it’s going to be a humdinger, I’ll tell you that,” Morgan said Sunday.”

Every time I read a story like this, I thank God for the Second Amendment and remain more determined than ever to do my part to keep this a gun saturated society.

These 2 people were Angels from God now they are Angels in Heaven with God. Even with all their cameras they apparently didn’t have, or weren’t using their burglar alarm. I guess they felt safe out in the country. This is tragic!

Kind of a weird case. All kinds of suveillance equipment on the property. The hit was carried out with "military precision". The perps did not know the victims. Robbery does not seem like a motive.

Did he have some enemies?

Well, assuming the perps did it, and they didn't know the victims, seems like a paid hit to me. The only other explanation is that they were driving around and decided to kill the adult occupants of that big house over there.

Also, police are expecting more "arrests" plural. They have two of the perps of the three who were at the crime scene.

Good for you! I believe in alarm systems not just for protecting your stuff while you are gone. Stuff can be replaced but an alarm keeps you from being shot in the head while you sleep, like these poor folks. Our dogs offer the same protection but we use the alarm at night as well.

We have 4 dogs in our bedroom at night nothing moves without us knowing about it. ;0)

I’ve been studying alarm systems now for several months. It’s amazing how many aspects there are to alarm systems when you start digging into the subject.

My research has been part of a project to get my company into the physical security business. We’re trying to look at security from a “holistic” perspective - including building relationships with dog trainers/breeders, etc.

I’m thinking that physical security may be the only growth industry in existence in our new “hope and change” economy.

None of our dogs are pitts or rotties or German Shepherds, the breeds you think of for protection. We have 3 Jack Russels and a big brown hound. All I expect from them is to warn me of an intruder, not to take them down. Mr Ditter and I will take care of that.

We had a funny thing happen here. When we got the iron fence and gates I put up BEWARE OF DOG and SECURITY DOG signs on the fence. When my new dishwasher was delivered by 2 huge guys, they were afraid to remain on the porch after ringing the bell. No dogs in sight, just dog signs, they wanted to know “is de security dawg chained up?”.

My husband told them yes he was and they felt secure enough to bring the dishwasher inside. Since then all my friends, whether they have dogs or not, have put up SECURITY DOG signs.

And here I was thinking I had the market cornered on cynasicm(!) That "loud buzzing" might be just the notice you need to get the drop on them.

And, of course, it might be just what is needed to keep that vast majority of non-hardcore criminals from stealing all your stuff when you aren't home to gun them down. :)

Alarm systems are systems for detecting unauthorized access. There's no way you're ever going to convince me that detection doesn't play a role. And all decent security systems are based on layers of security, of which an alarm system is one layer, and with the firearm logically being the last layer.

Dogs make great substitutes for loud buzzers - but they do crap a lot. :)

I agree that a dog or alarm would be better than being caught asleep. But there is simply NO SUBSTITUTE for an armed homeowner. Even if these people had an alarm system and it was on and it buzzed when the intruders broke in; it would provide NOTHING in terms of preventing what subsequently happened. And that being said, a good dog is better than a great alarm system.
