At a ramshackle homeless shelter in Reynosa, Mexico, on the south bank of the Rio Grande, a group of men stand in the suffocating heat all day. From behind a low cement wall, they stare across at the country where, until recently, they lived, worked and raised families.
... Manuel Cantero is among the men at the shelter. He's a 54-year-old laborer originally from Nuevo Laredo. For the past 29 years, he lived quietly in Miami, worked odd jobs, married and had three kids.
"But work began to get scarcer; my wife got into drugs. They deported me. I lost my children. And here I am," he says.
Cantero was deported to Mexico last week. He's still bewildered at his reversal of fortune. He says he was simply walking down the street when they picked him up.
...In recent years, [ICE]has been partnering with local police to find and remove illegal immigrants who commit crimes, even misdemeanors. Last year, 114,000 "criminal aliens" were deported. The largest number 85,000 were Mexican nationals, like Vidal Garcia.
"I've been here several months," Garcia says. "But when they deported me, the situation was critical. Work was dropping a lot. In the old days, with a fake Social Security number you could get work. But for about a year, every company now checks your Social Security card and your green card."
Garcia, 29, is a landscaper from Oaxaca, recently of Gainesville, Ga. ... Garcia, with a crew cut and sad eyes, says he was deported for drinking and brawling.
"They're deporting people for whatever reason," he says. "I came from Georgia, and there's a law that they can grab you for not having a license, for drinking a beer, for whatever reason they'll deport you."

Good. They all need to go home.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say they deport people who are here ILLEGALLY!!! About damn time too.
“there’s a law that they can grab you for not having a license, for drinking a beer, for whatever reason they’ll deport you.”
There’s also a law about being in the country ILLEGALLY there Vidal!!!
Oh boo freakin’ hoo!
the Baraqqis don’t need them until Nov 2012..........
Enforcement at the employment level is a great way of stopping illegal immigration.
Thank God Garcia was deported before he killed an innocent American family while driving drunk some Saturday night. That happens too frequently for me to feel sorry for him.
This sounds like more liberal propaganda. Obama is trying to create the impression that enforcement is working, which is supposed to be the precondition for comprehensive immigration reform, i.e., amnesty.
But when they deported me, the situation was critical

Yeppers they got rid of you before you could kill Americas by driving drunk on our roads...
I’d say that was critical...
This is NPR propaganda. The poor illegals etc etc. It is all BS because not enough are going home. Locally we have lots of brazilians and SEIU (ACORN) tries to organaize them. They go to the local hospital for free healthcare on my property taxes. They seem to have money to brun to go to brazilian clubs and restaurants until late at night.
Meanwhile - working class Americans are taxed to death while illegals get endless benefits including health care drugs, housing vouchers, legal aid, food stamps, welfare, education at $10,000 a year per kid and the list goes on and on.
Same thought here
:)
I say this as a husband of a LEGAL Mexican National that waited in line, paid $6000 in legal bills and who is STILL proving every year that this is a REAL marriage.
At out last hearing my wife and I started bickering about exact dates of when we met, first date, etc.
The examiner watched for a while and the said “Yeah, you two are definitely married!”

Haven’t heard much about America’s homeless since Obummer took over. Guess they’ve all immigrated to Mexico.
suprised that i’m actually reading this. I guess it is 2 fold-as mentioned at the employment level as well as the state level. good news indeed.
It definitely is precisely that, and if you listen to the audio you will barf. This is spoon-feeding for liberals. The illegals have "sad eyes" and they are "friendly" and they mourn the death of the one who drowned swimming the Rio Grande, blablabla......
I don't trust for one minute that enforcement is up that much. Something smells like pedo.

Tell your wife, Welcome to America
:)
Happens daily around the U.S. driving drunk or some sex crime involving a child. It is not that people from these countries are bad people but a lot of illegals have criminal records back home.
In other words we get a lot of their scum. Scams, frauds, mortgage fraud, medicare fraud and others are also big business. If you go to a foreign country, you cannot speak the language, your skills are limited etc etc - you are going to get involved in crime.
This libtard NPR tearjerker he starts talking about his wife getting involved in drugs then trails off. Drugs consumption or dealing or what? three kids? Who paid for them? Dumb poor Gringo whitey American taxpayers I bet.
three illegal aliens kids? Well the local public school between “education”, school bus, free lunch pluss breakfast and a snak (aka dinner) costs $10,000 each x 3 = $30,000 a year right there. Wonder why Calif is broke?
Boo freakin’ hoo.
orale vato, la migra!
Psst, we suspect it is 90% propaganda, as it is being fed via National "Public" Radio....*wink*
“...for whatever reason, they’ll deport you...” THAT’S BECAUSE YOU ARE HERE ILLEGALLY!!!!! ILLEGALLY!!!!!! GET IT, PEDRO?????
Deported for drinking and brawling. Wow NPR sanitized that. My guess is he probably knifed someone and people in GA (ie ICE) actually did their job.
I went into a pretty big golf store today and it was empty. One other car in the parking lot and they were not buying anything. I was going to buy something small and said to myself - I don;t need it.
I went in a Stein Mart today and they had 50+% sales and with their discount card it was closer to 60% off on some things. They have to give stuff away.
Obama is going to destroy this country.
Go to www.numbersusa.com or org to fax congress for free to stop illegal immigration. They provide canned letters you can modify etc. It is very easy to use and they alert you. It takes a minute a week.
Vamanos!!
Amazing that on the liberal NPR website this was published on, of the 16 who commented on the story ONE took the side of illegal aliens. The tide has definitely turned with this sour economy, and as Rahm Emanuel says, “Let’s not waste a crisis.” Let’s have our spineless Congress pass strong legislation withholding all federal funds to “sanctuary cities” that are aiding and abetting these criminal trespassers, and let’s mandate that every employer in the US be required to use E-Verify so that the Social Security numbers of our children and grandchildren are not stolen by all the crooks from all over the globe who have come to pick the bones of our economy clean. We will never have a better opportunity than during the next year because Congress has to face the voters in 2010.
I don’t believe this. Why would they deport a small number, I grant you, all of the sudden if they are going to vote for amnesty?
Bless you and your wife! My nephew married a beautiful lady from El Salvador. Her mother escaped the left wing death squads with her 3 young daughters in the 80s. I thank the Good Lord that they are now a part of our family!
They are all naturalized citizens!
as poor a vehicle as they may be for disseminating the truth, you suspect the number of deportees is totally made up?
Happiness is seeing an illegal heading home with an employee of NPR and a N.Y.er under each arm.
“Garcia, with a crew cut and sad eyes, says he was deported for drinking and brawling”
If i, as an American “gringo” was caught brawling in Mexico i would be at best, thrown in jail and fined or maybe shipped to some stinking Mexican prison that my relatives would have to buy me out of. More likely the latter.
So to Senior Garcia i say: Consider yourself lucky you were just deported and not invited for an extended stay at the Hotel Clink.
“But when they deported me, the situation was critical

Id say that was critical...”
About a month ago, in the next town over from me, we had a drunken illegal drive his pickup truck over a curb and into a mother and daughter going to a dance class. The little girl was virtually cut in half and the mother died later at the hospital of her injuries.
Whenever I hear some local idiot talk about the “poor illegals”, it’s all I can do to keep from decking him.
Here’s a father and little boy now without the other half of their family. I guess walking from your car to a dance class is now considered a dangerous activity.
One hell of a price to pay because these people “work cheap”.
..the gentlemen who hang out at the local Home Depot HAVE been looking a bit nervous lately...
Yes, stupid there is also a law that says you are not suppose to be here to begin with. Why do the jackass's think they are above the law?
Oh, I remember, John McCain and Gramnesty kissing Kennedy's rear is why. Dang!!!
You’re right. It all goes back to, comes down to, Ted Kennedy. He wrote the amnesty in the ‘70s and it gets trotted out every admin. He’s just about the most dangerous and damaging individual in American politics.
It's from NPR, all liberal propaganda, all the time.
“I came from Georgia, and there’s a law that they can grab you for not having a license, for drinking a beer, for whatever reason they’ll deport you.”
No, Vidal — YOU came from MEXICO. You hung out in Georgia, from where you were rightfully deported.
Lived in North GA mountains many years. Gainesville has a big influx of illegals for the construction and garden industries. They get paid under the table, get paid less, and receive many benefits the towns can’t afford. They do like to party loud and have no driver’s license! No auto insurance. Look out if they hit you.
Cry me a river.
Fixed it. ;-)
ping
HAHAHAHAHAHA! Yea, right, since when does ICE grab an illegal when they are "simply walking down the street?"
Total load of B.S.
I can jump in the car right now and drive five blocks from here and count about one hundred illegals on eight to nine street corners and parking lots on Ross Av.
ICE agents? Can't get them out of their air conditioned offices in downtown Dallas on a bet. It is a ten block hop from the ICE offices downtown to that stretch of Ross Av. That would be about a five minute drive, including the wait at the traffic lights.
The illegals have been there for at least ten years, there is yet to be a SINGLE ONE "picked up."
This is the same neighborhood that is about 90% illegals from mexico. Driving by the school on the way to and from lunch there is nary a white or black face to be seen. These local "public" scools wanted to copy California and import all textbooks and teaching guides FROM MEXICO.
This was shot down the same day but came back as a yet another rewrite of current American textbooks. This has been going on since the early 1990's!
http://www.jstor.org/pss/3377860
And then the School Board is so bewildered at the dropout rate? These are the same ones that they want the anchor kid to just show up most days, not pass and they will have then in the graduation ceremony, walk across the stage and give them a meaningless "certificate." Mommy and popie take pics with their cell phones and everybody is happy-happy till they find out little Nina and José can't get a job much past Mickey D's. All this is a copy of what has been going on in CA for two to three years and it is spreading.
Oh, what a mean and unfair country we are for sometimes, occasionally, actually deporting people! I think they all ought to go back to their home countries. Then they won’t have to be around us mean, unfair, racist, horrible Americans anymore. Adios!!
Ping!
If you want on, or off this S. Texas/Mexico ping list, please FReepMail me.
Haha! Good!!! Take some with you on the way.
Homie goin home!
I feel your pain. I live in L.A. and it is a nightmare.

It's very likely that is the motive behind this. In my wife's place of work )a private company) they just sent out letters to all employees who are supposed to be legal, stating that if their current legal status expiration date arrives and they have not shown proof that their status is extended, they will be terminated immediately.
That makes me think that this company believes that DHS is getting serious, at least temporarily.
