Dems regain control of (New York) Senate, Espada named majority leader

Sen. Pedro Espada Jr. has returned to the fold, giving the Democrats a 32-30 majority in the state Senate—again—and taking the title majority leader.

Espada (D-Bronx) said during a news conference this afternoon that his disagreement with fellow Democrats on June 8, which led to a Republican-led coup, “has never been about titles,” though he received the title of temporary president as a result of the coup.

“Today I stand here with another title,” he said. “I tell you very clearly, I have always been a Democrat. I will continue to be a Democrat. I never left home. I had a little leave of absence.”

The move comes a day after Gov. David Paterson appointed businessman Richard Ravitch lieutenant governor.

A state Supreme Court judge in Long Island issued a temporary restraining order not long after that appointment, preventing Ravitch from assuming the duties of lieutenant governor. The case is to be heard in Supreme Court at 11 a.m. on Friday.

So can Obama also appoint anybody as the VP. Say, Bill Ayers?

Paterson should be impeached for appointing somebody for the position of Lt Gov.

New York Republicans are not usually the brightest bulbs on Aisle Nine. They get played by the Dems and the so-called “Conservative Party” (ie the Mike Long Retirement Fund) all the time in this state.

The nature of NY GOPers is very clear to all of us. Are they really so similar you can switch back and forth? Apparently.

This is the damndest scheme I have ever heard of, Theguy turns Rep, to blackmail his Dem comrades, they pay him opff and he joins them agai.

This clown belongs in jail as do the Democrats who paid him off.

The U.S. Constitution and the New York State Constitution are totally separate animals. I'll give Patterson credit for having the balls to do something, and it definitely seemed to move the Senate. Dems would've gotten control back but Ravitch would have been in charge not ... whoever it is.

By the way, Obama indeed can nominate ANYBODY he wants to should Biden resign or leave, providing that they are eligible to be president and that the Senate then ratifies the choice. That was how we got Gerald Ford.

You want to impeach Paterson for getting bad legal advice? Hmmmmm, where have I been hearing that one.
;-)

The articles claiming he was crooked were only published when he switched to being a ‘republican’.

Now that he is back, all is forgiven again.

What a disgracefull media we have.

Conflicting info here. NY Post said Espada returns to the caucus without title and Smith reclaims both (President & Majority Leader/Acting Lt Governor) until January ‘10 and then turns it over to John Sampson.

What a disgracefull Senate New York has.

I would rather have a sister in a whore house than a brother in the New York Senate.

‘Tis always a sight to see the hysteria of a Democrat when he thinks maybe he will lose the control of government.
