Sen. Roland Burris has decided not to run for President Obama's former seat that he was appointed to under a cloud of controversy, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Thursday.
Burris plans to announce his decision Friday by issuing a statement to the press, the newspaper said.
Burris reached his decision after struggling to raise campaign funds. He reportedly only raised about $20,000, but campaign disclosures with the Federal Election Commission are expected to be filed next week.
A source told the newspaper that Burris has been very concerned about his legacy.
"After 20 years in government service, Burris didn't want the last four months in office to be that legacy," the source said.

Damn.
There goes an easy win.
Uh . . . WHO “decided” ?
Hmm, I wonder what deal Rahm cut with him.

Not surprised at all. Burris was the easiest opponent the GOP could have had. Burris is probably going to get something plum down the road (oh, but it WON’T be a quid pro quo, no sir-ree) for his ‘noble sacrifice’.
Is there a Republican running? IL GOP has been a nonentity for more than a generation.

He probably wanted to keep breathing..
How much was the payoff?
Dunno, but living here I can tell you the IL GOP blows big time.

irrk Dillard—there is a thread about his endorsement of obama it was posted today....he seem st be consumate IL pol
This of course means that he is fixed with benefits for life. Our government continues to be a criminal enterprise. Blago didn’t even get a cut.
Crap. I wanted him to run.
When there were noises back in January about Burriss resigning I said-no way. He’ll fill out the 2 years, make some lobbying deals and retire on a fat senators’ pension and healthcare for life.
Yes. The Republican candidate is Dr. Eric W. Wallace, Ph.D. He's the owner of Wallace multimedia and a longtime conservative Republican activist, sort of Illinois' version of Herman Cain.
You can check out his website at http://wallaceforillinois.com/
There is also an obnoxious liberal RAT scumbag named Mark Kirk running. Some freepers claim he's a Republican (his campaign literature simpy says he's a "Thoughtful Independent"), but his voting record shows he's a loyal Pelosi liberal. Envirowacko groups even rate him to the left of Obama.
GOVERNOR PRIMARY
Andrzejewski, Brady, Murphy, Proft = mostly conservative candidates, Edwards = right of center moderate. Cross, Schillerstrom, and Dillard = RINOish.
U.S. SENATE PRIMARY
Andy Martin = nutcase perennial candidate (has set up a really nice anti-Kirk website though), Robert Zadek = not enough data, Eric Wallace = conservative. Mark Kirk is so far gone he doesn't even qualify for RINO (RINOs like Arlen Specter at least PRETEND to be Republican during primary election campaigns. Kirk never has.) Kirk is a Democrat For All Practical Purposes. They should pass a truth-in-advertising law that would require his name to be listed on the RAT party ballot. Listing him as a Republican is like labeling carrots as a meat product at supermarket.
So, so far we’re endorsing Dr. Wallace for Senator and winnowing down the 4 Conservatives for Governor: Andrzejewski, Brady, Murphy & Proft. Andrzejewski is clearly too green and unseasoned, so that leaves Brady, Murphy & Proft. I’ll see how those three pan out before making an endorsement.
Will he follow Mosley-Fraud into a far-away ambassadorship?
The Malvides? Botswanna? Suriname? Tuvalu?
I agree with you, about truth in advertising. Dave Diersen told me that republican candidates should be required to sign an oath that states that they promise that they agree with most of the republican platform. If they don’t sign it, they couldn’t run as Republicans. If they sign the oath, win, and vote against the platform, the state party should announce that the candidate is no longer a Republican. IL GOP Chairman McKenna knows about Dave’s idea, but he disagrees.
Since roland Burris isn’t running for re-election, Mark Kirk is opting out of the Senate race.
Will Rep. Kirk have a conservative primary opponent? About 2/3 of Republicans, I know, in his district, dislike him, because he’s too liberal.
The important thing at this point is just get out the word to the conservative base that the two Kirks (Dullard & Marky Mark) are Obama Republicans that are completely unacceptable choices in the primary. Up until recently, alot of freepers didn't even know about Kirk's betrayal on the surge and just believed what they heard in the media about his "great national security credentials" and "military expertise". The media loves Kirk as much as Obama and will do everything possible to sell him to GOP primary voters. I doubt anyone outside of Illinois has ever heard of Dillard, and even within Illinois probably most people who have heard of him only know he's a big GOP power player out in DuPage county. His record of cozying up to Democrats must be publicized to Illinois republican primary voters.
Assuming we're still on the 2008 election rules, I'm assuming the Illinois primary will be in Feb. 2010. I'm sure the Governor's field will narrow by then and we will be able to tell who is the strongest conservative.
I bet he changes his mind. That Senate seat is worth something in court.
The IL primary will be on Feb. 2. Candidates can start circulating petitions on Aug. 4, only 25 days from now.
The Washington Post story saying Kirk had dropped out because Burris is not running for re-election is NOT true and has been retracted:
Washington Post Kirk Story WRONG
Illinois Review has learned from Republican Party sources that the Washington Post’s “Fix” story is NOT true. In fact, members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation have started to endorse Mark Kirk for U.S. Senate, including Rep. Judy Biggert and Governor Jim Edgar.

Kirk is still undecided. Kirk and Andy are going to have a friendly chat over the weekend on who is most deserving of the Senate race. One of the two will drop out and endorse the other.

“In Washington, Burris often appeared a lonely figure, ignored at times by colleagues milling around between votes. Asked his top accomplishments, aides cited Burris’ vote in favor of the stimulus package, his introduction of legislation to improve accountability for the distribution of stimulus funds in states, and his work on behalf of veterans on a Senate committee.”
+++++++++++++++++++++
Wow, he’s done more than zero did in the Senate...
Voting for the stimulus package is an ‘accomplishment.’
Is it any wonder we detest these clowns...those of us who work for a living?
