A Starter, Not A Finisher
Washington Post ^ | 7/6/09 | Eugene Robinson

Edited on 07/07/2009 5:36:32 AM PDT by Admin Moderator. [history]

What can you say about a public official who ridicules those who would take the "quitter's way out" -- as she faces reporters to announce that she's quitting? A governor who claims that "the worthless, easy path" would be to serve out the remaining 18 months of her term? An ambitious politician who says that "life is too short" to worry about, you know, boring things such as responsibility or duty?

This piece is in the Washington Post. The writer says: "You can say that all of us who ever took Sarah Palin seriously ...."

I doubt it. No one at the WarshPost ever took Sarah Palin seriously. In fact the "Posties" won themselves a place in her lawyer's notice to the idiots who continue to post and publish lies about her and her children.

I'd think it is time for the gay blades and street walkers at the WarshPost to take some time out from their ever so busy days (and evenings) and READ the letter.

Why do Freepers bother to post this crap?

Because this is what she will have to endure if she wants to go any further.

Frankly, I don't agree with what she did. She DID quit. We may find out why soon. Or, we may not.

Either way the idea that she left Alaska in the lurch is nutty. There is a lt. governor and he should be able to take over. Would idiots like this author say the same thing if she took ill and had to leave?

We do have to understand what the Wicked Side is saying. Our friends and neighbors will hear this and we need answers.

I think she stands a good chance of living this down, but it won’t be overnight. She, rather naively, opened the gates of hell upon herself with her too-trusting new ethics rules. Well surprise surprise, as Gomer Pyle would have said.

I’m just curious, did Sarah Palin die? So many obituaries.

Last I checked, Palin was still a natural born citizen over the age of 35. Guess she can run for president just fine.

You can say that all of us who ever took Sarah Palin seriously—or pretended to take her seriously—should be deeply ashamed. And you can say that John McCain should publicly apologize for putting the nation he loves at risk by choosing Palin as his running mate. Imagining Palin within a heartbeat of the presidency should be enough to make even die-hard Republicans shudder.

Yeah. Imagine a blithering idiot one heartbeat away from the presidency.

Oh, wait. We actually do have a blithering idiot one heartbeat away from the presidency...Joe Biden. Unlike Governor Palin, nobody has to make up evidence that he’s an idiot. Anybody with eyes and ears knew or should have known it long before Barack Obama selected Joe Biden as his running mate. Including Barack Obama. Especially Barack Obama. Any plans to ask for his apology, Gene?

Well, if it were me, I'd say she's fed up with the relentless attacks by the disingenuous drool-by-media on herself and her family and has decided to take a different path in life. Frankly, I admire the fact that she stuck it out this long but enough is enough.

Folks, the DBM isn't dying fast enough and we need to step it up to help kill them off and bring this type of "reporting" (it ISN'T "journalism", no matter what they call it!) to an immediate and sudden halt!!

The man can’t see what is before him, what Sarah stated. Perhaps it is easier to state it a tad differently. Her reasons were multiple, ranging from her continued stay in the governor’s job would cost Alaska and Sarah money and aggravation, neither of which was needed by them. She saw this and knew that it was time to exit the office and move on, knowing that her successor would do a good job. She knew that she’d be leaving Alaska in capable hands.

As for her being a quitter? I can understand the writer’s point, but one should never feel compelled to continue on in a job just to keep from being labeled a quitter. There are times when it’s appropriate to quit. One should not continue down a dead-end road, or one that is going in the wrong direction. One should not throw good money after bad. One should know when to quit. There is, after all, a time for everything, and this is the right time to quit. Sarah’s enemies felt that they’d be able to focus on her as Alaska’s governor and that it would be like shooting fish in a barrel. That is no longer an option for them.

Sarah has stepped out of the confines of the office to face her opponents and fight them, as necessary, with their own weapons. She knows what is important, and holding an office for the sake of not being labeled a quitter, while doing that would cost Alaska and her family plenty, is the wrong thing to do. Whatever she opts to do now, she will be doing it free and clear, and if that includes earning big bucks to pay off the huge debts incurred by frivolous legal battles, make some money and consider running for higher office, so be it.

I voted for McCain but only because Sarah was his running mate. She caught my interest from the start, with her energy and her plain-spoken style being very appealing. I’m a mom, too, and had someone attacked my kids as they did hers, they’d also be answering to me.

Sarah, don’t listen to the twits who refuse to understand your reasons. These are the people who use our rules and laws against us. Do what you need to do, what is right for you and let the naysayers do what they do best—naysay. You don’t need them, anyhow.

We already know why she did it, to stop the frivolous law suits being brought against the state of Alaska by various leftist organizations. It was costing the state unnecessary expenses. She did it for the state, even at her own expense politically. I for one say it was a courageous move and I applaud her for it.

First of all I would like to point out even Dan Quayle never had as much media abuse as Sara has received in the last year. As a matter of fact, Dan Quayle never had to go through what she has in the last few months with the pointless attacks.

When it gets to the point where a Governor has to spend more of their time responding to daily personal attacks against her and members of her family, it's time to step down and let someone else take over. Even though being a Governor of prosperous state is a very powerful position to run for President from, keeping the state in a good position until the election is too risky for the State of Alaska. If Alaska ends up as bad as (insert your state's name here), this will be a huge mistake on her part.

The other good thing about her stepping down is that she can campaign without spending Alaska's tax dollars to do it. How many other candidates in the last presidential election weren't on the Federal or state's payroll while they ran? The three strongest contenders were US Senators taking their entire paycheck from us?

She DID quit.

Yes, for legitimate reasons that you fail or refuse to understand. They have already been stated quite clearly.

The same point was made just today by Sarah in an interview by Andrea Mitchell. After Andrea asked yet another "but aren't you a failure for quitting" question Sarah responded: "You are NOT listening to me!" And yet again explained why the state of AK is better off with these moves.

You may not accept Sarah's explanation. Fine. But to refuse to listen is the pride before the fall. You and the rest who behave this way will be proven wrong IMO.

Either way, we'll have to wait for Sarah's next major move to see who is correct.

If she's the great leader and politician that everyone says she is how is Alaska better off without her?

If this is what is to follow her no matter where she goes how can she be an effective leader? Were she to run for president would the nation, like Alaska, be better off not having to put up with defending her?

I believe what she said. If she is leaving politics and public life fine. That explanation would be sufficient. But, if she plans to go on then she will continue to experience this onslaught of attacks.

This is why I say "We may find out why soon. Or, we may not." Did she quit to leave public life or to go do something else. She can't quit Alaska and then expect to go on to another office. If she leaves public life then it would be true she quit for the stated reason.

If she now goes on to something else then she will only bring the albatross to that new position.

She can't have it both ways.
