Biden: U.S. Won't Stop Israeli Strike On Iran
Haaretz ^ | July 5, 2009

Posted on 07/05/2009 7:42:20 AM PDT by Strategy

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said on Sunday that the Obama administration would not stand in Israel's way should the latter chooses to take military action to eliminate Iran's nuclear threat.

Israel has the right to determine its own course of action with regard to the Iranian nuclear threat regardless of what the Obama administration chooses to do, Biden told ABC reporter George Stephanopoulos.

When asked whether the Obama administration would restrain Israeli military action against Iran, Biden responded: "Israel can determine for itself - it's a sovereign nation - what's in their interest and what they decide to do relative to Iran and anyone else."

Nice. Now say the same thing about Honduras. Thanks!

The only way to reconcile Biden’s statement (that the US will not prevent an Israeli attack on Iran) with the public US policy of ‘negotiation’ with Iran (no military option) is to say that Obama is not a leader. He would prefer that somebody, anybody would do his dirty work for him so that he can continue to preen & moralize.

Biden responded: "Israel can determine for itself - it's a sovereign nation - what's in their interest and what they decide to do relative to Iran and anyone else."

But your boss does not think that Honduras is a sovereign nation and can do what's in their interest and what they decide to do relative to Zelaya and anyone else."

Stephanaopoulos posed the question three times, and each time Biden repeated that Israel was free to choose its actions.

Ha! I can just picture Stephanopoulos practically waving his arms around and shouting "No, no, no Joe!"

Boy are you spot on. There’s no way the haloed one is happy with this. Yesterday it was said the US would BLOCK new sanctions on Iran by G8 because it would interfere with engagement. There’s no possibility that Joe’s statement will put the mullahs in the mood to engage. We’ll hear a retraction soon.

Don't believe a word of it. Obama will make it a very expensive act of sovereignty. He won't stand in the way simply because he can't, but that doesn't mean Israel will not pay through the nose after the fact.

Maybe Joe just spoke out of turn, but, like a broken clock, this is his time to be right.

Israel is a sovereign nation.

On the other hand, Saudi Arabia greatly fears Iran, and Obama bows to the Saudi king.

The American people have to sanction Obama and as quickly as possible. We have to activate and turn the congress around in ‘10 then dump his purple lips but good in 12. Otherwise, this great country as you know it is finished.

Biden: US not stand in Israel’s way on Iran
16 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden seemed to give Israel a green light for military action to eliminate Iran’s nuclear threat, saying the U.S. “cannot dictate to another sovereign nation what they can and cannot do.”...

Biden was asked in the interview that if the Israelis decide they need to try to take out Iran’s nuclear program, would the U.S. stand in the way militarily?

“We cannot dictate to another sovereign nation what they can and cannot do,” the vice president replied. “Israel has a right to determine what’s in its interests, and we have a right and we will determine what’s in our interests.”

This from the DRUDGE REPORT

EXCERPT

The Sunday Times July 5, 2009 Saudis give nod to Israeli raid on IranUzi Mahnaimi in Tel Aviv and Sarah Baxter The head of Mossad, Israel’s overseas intelligence service, has assured Benjamin Netanyahu, its prime minister, that Saudi Arabia would turn a blind eye to Israeli jets flying over the kingdom during any future raid on Iran’s nuclear sites.

Earlier this year Meir Dagan, Mossad’s director since 2002, held secret talks with Saudi officials to discuss the possibility.

The Israeli press has already carried unconfirmed reports that high-ranking officials, including Ehud Olmert, the former prime minister, held meetings with Saudi colleagues. The reports were denied by Saudi officials.

A closed mouth gathers no feet, Joe.

I'm amazed that Dan Quayle took so much flak for years, and yet with Biden, it's just a friendly chuckle and an "Aww, Joe" from the media. There's no way that the Administration is trying to punk Iran on the heels of trying to make nice with them. Yet here's Joe, dropping a threat that might make John Bolton say, "Ohh, harsh."

When pushed to comment on whether or not the US would grant “over-fly rights … in Iraq,” Biden responded, “I’m not going to speculate, George, on those issues, other than to say Israel has a right to determine what’s in its interests, and we have a right and we will determine what’s in our interests.”

You hit the nail on the head! I fully expect a resignation and three years of “I told you so!”

No sitting President ever survived a re-election campaign when they had a primary challenge to defeat first. Ask Jimmy and Teddy. Hillary will doom Obama in `12 if she runs a half-way effective primary challenge.

As I understand it, Israel is planning on using their Jericho III missiles as the tip of their spear in any attack on Iran. Sometime back, I saw that the US has modified their SLBM’s to use a hardened non-nuclear warhead, similar to the rods from god scenarios. I’d expect that the Israelis would have a similar capability with their ICBM’s. It wouldn’t take to many ICBM’s fitted with Tungsten alloy warheads to totally evicerate the Iranian program, and their buried hardened sites wouldn’t be any match for the kinetic vehicles that will probably be employed.

I still have trouble understanding why Hillary quit the Senate to be Secretary of State. She had much more power and influence as a senator. As it is, Obama has shrunken the power of her office anyway—she is just a figurehead at this point. Futher, she must carry his water lest she seem insubordinate. She must serve for at least 2 years, otherwise she will be seen as incompetent and/or petty.

That approach makes much more sense than Israel wasting their best jets and pilots. At a minimum, you need to shred the Iranian air defense system before any major attack.

Actually, the best way to bring Iran down would be a coodinated US, EU, Israeli, and Saudi attack. That would leave Iranians speechless and feeling very isolated. Their Nutjob leaders days would be numbered. It will never happen, but I can dream.
