WASHINGTON (AP) - Colin Powell worries that President Barack Obama is trying to tackle too many big issues at one time.
In an interview to be aired Sunday on CNN, the former secretary of state says he's worried about the huge national debt that's piling-up.
Powell says that while the needs of the people must be met, the size of the government, and the tax burden, need to be kept as small as possible.
He says the president has to start taking a "very, very hard look" at the cost of all he wants to do and at whether the bureaucracy that'll be created will be effective.
Powell says he talks with the president from time to time and has expressed his concerns to the administration.

What did people like Powell not see before the election that the rest of us saw, besides race?
More proof that Colin Powell is a RINO and needs to resign from the board for the GOP.
[RINO] Colin Powell cautions Obama on big government [whines about debt] [BARF]
Colon, your breath stinks.
maybe comrade colin’s losing some of his investments!
Powell’s being out of character. Typically, I’d expect him to wait until everything has passed, and THEN caution Obama not to spend too much.
No doubt the Dems will shut him up shortly...he obviously jumped the gun.
Affirmative action nuff said.
With the exception of national defense, treaties, roads, and currency, I think the people can meet their own needs very well without government.
Powell said a few months ago, Americans want higher taxes for public services. So what’s his problem?
Colin has that telltale brown ring around his neck due to having his head well up his rectum. The man’s judgment is serially flawed.
We need to quit calling Colin Powell a RINO. Call him a flaming liberal Democrat.
Don’t tell me this jackass didn’t know who or what Obama is about?
"The Republican Party is in deep trouble," Powell told corporate security executives at a conference in Washington sponsored by Fortify Software Inc. The party must realize that the country has changed, he said. "Americans do want to pay taxes for services," he said. "Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less.""Powell said a few months ago, Americans want higher taxes for public services. So whats his problem?"
I think Powell's problem is that he just got his tax bill.
Stick finger in Air.
Determine which way wind is blowing.
Go that direction.
*snickers*
Anyone, and I mean ANYONE who bothered to listen to one single speech 0bama gave during the Democratic primaries ought to have known what was coming. All the post-nomination invoking of Reagan and/or the “moderate” label was just smokescreen. If Powell really thought otherwise, then he’s a fool.
Powell had a chance to speak up for what was right. He chose to sell out instead.
Now he just needs to shut up. Too little too late.
Why did Powell vote for him? Because he took Obama seriously on changing the way Washington works, going over the budget with a fine-toothed comb, throwing lobbyists out, curtailing pork-barrel spending, etc.? How gullible can you be?
I can understand Democrats criticizing the president from within. They were stuck with the guy. But Colin, until recently a reported Republican, ought to have known better.
Because Obama campaigned on a Realist foreign policy and McCain campaigned on a NeoCon foreign policy.
He serves no purpose as a liberal Democrat. He just fades into oblivion if he switches sides.
If I had to choose between Powell, McQueeg or Ridge for the title of Most Loathsome Republican, my head would probably explode.
RIHOMO
Republican in his OWN MIND only!
Typing RINO for him is a waste of keystrokes.
Let us not judge him by the content of his skin, but by the color of his character.
What Powell did see was himself being called an Uncle Tom by the bros.
You mean the White House’s Weapons-of-Mass-Destruction PR man suddenly isn’t a “neo-con,” but rather has adopted “realism”.
What’s the difference between the two again? Oh yeah, realists infiltrate everywhere around the globe for mankind and international order, whereas neo-cons infiltrate everywhere around the globe for national security and freedom (or whatever).
Wait, I thought Powell was trying to tell us a couple of months ago that the American people WANT big government? Which is it, Colin?
Whereas neocons infiltrate everywhere around the globe for republican election bloodbaths.
WTF ... Colon Bowell just told us weeks ago that the American people want more and bigger goobermint, more services, and are willing to pay higher taxes for it.
This assclown can’t decide which side of the fence to fall on.
“Hey, boy. I don’t need you any more. I got elected and you don’t mean nothin’. Thanks for the endorsement, BTW.”
wow, so will 0Bama kick him off the plantation next??
Colin Powell, I nominate you for the Jimmy Carter Just-Go-the-Hell-Away-and-Shut-the-Ef-Up Award
His vote was blinded by the color of the candidates skin and not the experience of the candidate.
Powell claims he thinks government should be small, LOL!!
The jokes keep writing themselves.
He must have stuck his finger in the wrong place.
That statement is oxymoronic, and so is Colin Powell.
And to think -- I once really admired this man. He went and opened his damned fool mouth and ruined it.
From one Affirmative Action Baby to Another.
Does powell really think anyone from either side gives a crap about what he says? No one trusts a turncoat.
What a great conservative leader!
This would be a great time for Obama to appoint Powell to some high government post, so that he could say that the administration is bipartisan.
The press would certainly go along after discussing it in the WaPo salons for $25k per head.
When you stick your finger in the air and the wind is not blowing, it is time to retract the finger.
