ROME (AFP) — US President Barack Obama said in an interview published Friday he thought Pope Benedict XVI would "share my approach" on policy in the Middle East.
Obama, who is due to meet the pope on July 10, told Catholic Italian newspaper Avvenire he was keen to discuss the situation in the Middle East with the head of the Roman Catholic Church.
"It is a subject I am keen to discuss with the pope, I think he will share my approach," said Obama, who will meet the pope after the G8 summit in the central Italian town of L'Aquila.
Obama has made relaunching the Middle East peace process a top priority, pledging a new beginning for Islam and the United States in a landmark speech to the world's Muslims delivered in Cairo last month.
He has also bluntly called for Israel to halt settlement activity on Palestinian land while urging Arabs to move closer to making peace with Israel.
Asked about US policy in the region, Obama told Avvenire: "What the United States can do, without imposing a solution, is to hold a mirror up to both of the parties to show them the consequences of their actions."
He went on: "On one hand, it is not just Israel's fault."
"The Palestinians have the responsibility to stop the violence and Arab countries in the region must understand that Israel is called upon to take some very difficult political decisions, the Jewish state has security needs like any country," he said.
Obama said he hoped to find much common ground with the pope "from peace in the Middle East to the fight against poverty, from climate change to immigration.
"All these areas where the pope has shown extraordinary leadership," he told Avvenire, the Italian bishops' mouthpiece.

Zero doesn’t get it. None of them do. The Pontiff speaks from a spiritual realm, not from the worldly realm.
Zero also believes that compromise and political negotiations can sway Benedict.
Don't hope too much. Past popes have not done much to inspire confidence.

That is the Koran - a work of Satan. Really.
Zero does not believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that the Church believes in. He believes that he is the Authority of the world. His agenda is anti Christ. But is he “the” anti-christ?
His target now shifts to the Pope and the beliefs of Christianity (as he publicly “struggles” with his “faith” and it’s treatment of gays during this month of LGBT Pride he has declared).
What a self-absorbed tool.
Exactly. I read other parts of this interview, and it was all about him. The guy is delusional and he speaks as if he, rather than the Faith, were the reference point for the Pope, the bishops and the Church.
Incredible.
The Vatican has been in favor of a two-state solution for a long time, although obviously not in favor of the one Bambi has in mind, which would effectively destroy Israel.
That said, it’s not within the power of either the Pope or Bambi to impose their views on this matter and I doubt that the Pope would waste a lot of time talking about it. Bambi, however, will try, because his insane, outsize anti-Christ ego demands that he make it seem as if he is calling the shots in every world event and that the world and the Pope are hanging on his every word.
The Pope has to meet with world leaders, but I wish in this case that he didn’t, because whatever goes on at this meeting will be used by Bambi to imply that the Pope has finally seen the light and now realizes that The One is the person he should have been listening to all along.
Yes, I know it is a work of Satan. I also know it is not a religion of peace!!

wonder how the discussion on abortion will go, O......
So, the silver tounged devil thinks he can even charm the Pope. We’ll see.
That's an interesting way to say it. Not that the Pope would support or agree with his approach or bless it, that he would share his approach.
Something about that wording bothers me a great deal as it seems to elevate the Pope to obama's level and make the Pope an equal to obama...in obama's mind. Or the other way around.
Perhaps I'm too critical, but I find obama to be very offensive on so many levels. For me, about the only thing he has going for him is his tan and that's just not enough.
The messiah thinks he will be talking to the help. Crock Omama is so full of himself.

You hit the nail on the head!
This red son of a bitch is going to try and paint the Pope as a fellow anti-semite who thinks Hussein is a great guy.
They do not let up for a second, they think they are so smart, but they will crash and burn spectacularly all the same
Hussein is such an egotist that he frames a discussion with the leader of the Church as "what he is going to do for ME."
Exceedingly creepy.
Bet he doesn't genuflect and kiss his ring, either.
