The Rainbow Gathering and the U.S. Forest Service continue to trade charges over the festival that is expected to draw 10,000 people to a Northern New Mexico forest by Independence Day.
More than 200 people so far have had to travel 240 miles round-trip from the site in the Santa Fe National Forest near Cuba, N.M., to Albuquerque to see U.S. Chief Magistrate Lorenzo Garcia ... Forest Service spokeswoman Denise Ottaviano said only six of the arrests have been for felonies — assault on a federal officer, theft of government property, damage to government property and conspiracy.
Seized drugs, she said, have included marijuana, hashish, crystal methedrine, heroin and psilocybin mushrooms... One participant "overdosed three times and had to be transported out to a medical facility three times," Ottaviano said. "The information we got was that it was LSD, but there may have been other things that he was taking that we're not aware of."
Ottaviano said the most serious incident so far was a stabbing ...

What's really scary is that given the state of affairs in America today, there's probably a future Senator or President somewhere in that crowd. The last bunch of similar unwashed freaks bestowed upon us the likes of Kerry and Boxer, et. al. Hell, there might even be a little 21st-Century Stanley Anne Dunham wandering around in there with a little Obaby, just ripe for Manchurian candidacy in about 2048.

New Mexico was a great state until hippies discovered it. When I lived in conservative Portales, we got a republican elected in our district because the GREEN party took nearly a third of the vote - running on a platform that included cutting the population of New Mexico by, I think, 2/3.
Shoot, I would have voted Green, if it meant that THEY would be the ones who would leave! But of course, they meant for everyone else to leave...

Same thing when they held one of their gatherings in Montana several years ago. Not sure when it was but there were lots of arrests for drugs and assault type charges. It took months for the forestry service to clean up what was left behind and some that attended were eventually prosecuted for that.

Rainbow Gathering Turns Into Mudfest
Robbie Gordon has been attending Rainbow Family gatherings for 29 years. He is 63 years old and needs a wheelchair to get around. Wheelchair access is no minor thing at a Rainbow gathering, particularly in the rainy, muddy area near Cuba where this year's participants are camped out. But Gordon has a plan. His wheelchair is equipped with PVC piping that can be pulled like a rickshaw. When he needs to move around, other Rainbow participants just pull him wherever he needs to go, even if that is through the mud and over tree roots.

Rain notwithstanding, there was plenty of partying in the meadow. Even as sheets of rain turned the main meadow area into a slimy mud pit, revelers kept up a quick, persistent drumbeat and danced in a throbbing crowd.
By about 3 p.m., many participants were sliding through the mud, covering their entire bodies and lifting one another into the air. Many were fully or partially naked, running muddy hands joyfully through their hair and splashing each other with the goo."
