State agency's new logo has an anarchist ring to it

Madison As the state agency charged with running elections, the Government Accountability Board can't show favor for Republicans or Democrats.
But is it biased toward anarchists?
The board recently launched a new logo - an A inside a circle - that looks similar to the traditional symbol for anarchy.
"It being an anarchy sign and the government - there's definitely irony there," said Madison's Ear Wax Record Shop owner Rob Cleveland, who is familiar with the anarchy symbol from following punk music for years.
"It's almost like the joke is on them," he said.
The board paid about $4,900 to have the logo designed by Madison-based Cricket Design Works, said Kevin Kennedy, the board's director. He said he first became aware of the similarity when a board employee mentioned it as they reviewed drafts of the design.
"I think there are significant differences" between the designs, Kennedy said.
The design firm didn't return a call.
The traditional anarchy symbol shows an A inside a circle, with the A's horizontal cross-hatch extending to the edge of the circle or beyond. The board's logo is similar, but softer and more refined looking.
The board administers elections, monitors campaign finance reports and investigates allegations of ethics violations. Kennedy said it's not entirely inappropriate to link its work to anarchy.
"Our role is to bring accountability to what could otherwise be anarchy," Kennedy said.
It is the board's second glitch with images in the past year. A new Web site the board runs showed the Wisconsin state Capitol in front of the Minneapolis skyline. The board blamed that mistake on a computer contractor and fixed the site, http://cfis.wi.gov/.
But Warwick Seay, owner of the Circle-A Café, 932 E. Chambers St., in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood, said it was odd for a state agency to use the symbol of a political philosophy that shuns government.
"I think it's a strange choice for them. Irony is an overused word, but that's somewhat ironic in this case," said Seay, who goes by the name Warlock.
The café - now closed but possibly reopening - includes an anarchy symbol on one side of its sign and an Army logo on the other.
At the Madison InfoShop - a collectively run center that provides anarchist literature - a volunteer who goes by the name Tops said she found the use of the logo amusing.
"The whole point of anarchism is to hold each and every one of ourselves accountable," she said.
"The fact is the government is not very accountable."

My state Government is run by a bunch of dipsh*ts.
Similar? ROTFL! It’s the same damn thing!
I don’t think any real anarchists will bother to show up in court to sue...they don’t beleive in courts.
Your designation of the state government of Wisconsin was much too kind and perhaps did not reveal your true feelings. Com’on, tell us how you REALLY feel.
I left the state years ago and never looked back. And STILL they pursued me for several years because I wasn’t paying my “fair share” in state income taxes, even though I no longer lived there, and had established residence in Virginia, and later Nevada.
They may still have a warrant out for me.

That reminds me of the Chrysler executive who was saying the Aztek wasn’t ugly.
As usual, you are 100 percent correct!
The glimmer of hope that Walker will win the governorship from Egghead Doyle in 2010 is helpful. This news about Sarah is IMHO also a glimmer of hope. She’s going after the Presidency with all her might. I’m all in. GO Sarah GO!
Of course real anarchists:
It’s embarrassing as hell, isn’t it?
Anarcy in the USA , its coming some time anyway.
Anarchy in the USA , its coming some time anyway.
We all know how well elections have been conducted in this state since Diamond Jim took the reigns of power.
Who’s talking about me???
Looks like a tire with the tread coming off.
“They may still have a warrant out for me.”
If you ever need to come back you can stay in my bunker, guarded by my Pittbull, ‘Dick Cheney.’ ;)
Well, it sure makes you miss tommy Thompson, that’s for sure, LOL! Love him or hate him, the man really loved this state.
I am SO looking forward to working for Scott Walker’s campaign. :)
“Im all in. GO Sarah GO!”
Me, too.

Looks like they took the anarchy symbol, and wrapped one of Winnie Mandela's 'necklaces' around it, complete with little tiny flames.
Good call. Yikes!
Well, that’s certainly representative of the state.
