Sarah Palin Explains Her Decision to Resign
CampaignSpot ^ | 7/3/09 | Jim Gerahgty

Posted on 07/03/2009 1:25:20 PM PDT by JRochelle

"I know when it's time to pass the ball for victory," soon-to-be-former Governor Sarah Palin says at a press conference with her family, standing before a picturesque river and seaplane.

She says she's looking forward to the swearing in of Lt. Governor Sean Parnell. "All I can ask is that you trust me with this decision," she says. "I cannot millions of dollars and time go to waste just so I can remain as governor of Alaska.

"This decision has been in the works for a while. It comes after a great deal of prayer and deliberation."

She said when she put the decision to her family, the vote was four "yes"es and one 'Hell yeah.' She mentions the family's reaction to the mockery of Trig.

She said her decision was "fortified during her visit to the troops in Kosovo."

"It hurts to make this choice, but I've given my reasons. I'm reminded of a sign on my parents' refrigerator, 'Don't explain; your friends don't need it, and your enemies won't believe you anyway.'"

UPDATE: The official statement from her office:

Governor Sarah Palin announced today that she will not seek a second term as Governor of the State of Alaska and will relegate the power of governor to Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell in order to serve Alaska’s best interests. Lieutenant General Craig Campbell will move into Parnell’s current role.

“People who know me know that besides faith and family, nothing's more important to me than our beloved Alaska,” said Governor Palin. “Serving her people is the greatest honor I could imagine.”

Standing outside her home in Wasilla, Alaska, Governor Palin reflected upon some of the administration’s accomplishments for Alaska as she approaches her final year in office.

“I am determined to take the right path for Alaska even though it is not the easiest path,” said Governor Palin after the announcement. “Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional ‘Lame Duck’ status in this particular climate would just be another dose of ‘politics as usual,’ something I campaigned against and will always oppose. It is my duty to always protect our great state. With that in mind, my family and I determined that it is best to make a difference this summer, and I am willing to change things, so that this administration, with its positive agenda, its accomplishments, and its successful road to an incredible future, can continue without interruption and with great administrative and legislative success. I look forward to helping others – to fight for our state and our country, and campaign for those who believe in smaller government, free enterprise, strong national security, support for our troops, and energy independence.”

The transfer of power will occur following the Governor’s picnic in Fairbanks on July 26. At that point in time, Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell will be sworn in and Lieutenant General Craig Campbell will assume his role as Lieutenant Governor.

Probably a transcript error given how quickly this developed. It was kind of unnerving watching her - she seemed to be about to lose it and throwing a temper tantrum. I can’t believe she was nearly VP. I sympathize with her though, it’s easy to see how the pressure got to her given the demands of her family.

arah’s brother tells FOX that she’s been spending too much time defending herself against alleged ethics violations.

Bad precedent IMHO. With this development, any Democrat who does not want a GOP candidate to become successful can concoct alleged violation after violation until you tire of the whole thing.

Hillary was in the same boat before but had more cash and outside support to defend herself. Plus Hillary has less shame.

Who is going to be the next Dem target of “ethics violation” ? Bobby Jindal ? Mitch Daniels ?

I think many people have forgotten who Palin would be running against for President. Palin is a veteran politician compared to Obama. I don't think with all her accomplishments that too many non-leftist people will call her a "quitter". She may also be trying to kick out Alaska's US Senator Lisa Murkowski or Alaska's US Reperesentative Don Young.

Bad move IMHO. Being a governor of a state gave her credibility. A second term would have solidified that. Giving it up after 3 years is foolish in my opinion. She will still have a platform and she’ll be able to travel the lower 48, but quitting the governorship will confirm most peoples’ doubts that she is too inexperienced to run for president.

She can now devote full time to campaigning for house and senate candidates who support the former Constitution.

She has just improved, significantly, the probability of retaking the house and eliminating the 60-vote hangman's noose in the senate.

Sounds to me like a call to arms. I think she’s going to do her darndest to affect the 2010 elections with her PAC, and then probably going to go for the Oval Office in 2012. She can’t do that effectively as a sitting governor.

Gutsy move, IMHO. Three and a half years is an eternity in Presidential Politics. Remember when Hillary was the shoo-in for the Democratic nomination?

My advice to everyone is to quit panicking (or celebrating) this moment of political theater, and work tirelessly towards the defeat of the Statists, regardless of what political party they belong to.

I think this is a reflection of the negative support she's receiving from the RNC. As a result I bet she's hardly more able to handle the $500,000 in legal fees she's spent defending herself than most other Americans.

I think this is a measure of the corruption within the RNC.

IF she's running, she's doing it with all the effective brilliance of Former Ambassador Allan Keyes.

I honestly wish her the best of luck, and peace to her family, in private life. No family deserved to go through what they've been put through the last 9 months.

But a wise political move this is not, and it's a horrible loss for the nation - on it's birthday, of all times.

This is a brilliant move by Sarah, mark my words. Just as in years past when Ronald Reagan worked for GE and toured the entire nation talking to the plant workers and the people of America, now Sarah can do the same. She can campaign for Republican candidates across the land, raise cash, raise money for her family and the party and just meet and greet. It’s a brilliant move. Brilliant!

I can see the logic there. She, as a lame duck politician would be open to harsh criticism from the libtards and MSM. She is a moving target that is unconventional and unpredictable. I predict that the left is going to be more scared of her now than ever before.

It seems like she made the decision to take the path of least resistance and seems to continue her efforts to attempt to keep government expenses low. This point needs to be hammered home to all Americans. Look, a politician who isn't immediately ready to piss away millions of your tax dollars to further her ambitions.

I don't see this as a bad thing at all, and it deprives her opponents, from all ‘sides’, of many avenues of attack and ammunition for those attacks. In any case, she was going to be continually harassed and this may actually give her some breathing room.
