SEOUL, July 2 (Yonhap) -- North Korea test-fired a pair of what appears to be short-range missiles off its east coast on Thursday, a South Korean official said.

"One was fired at 5:20 p.m. and the other at 6:00 p.m. from Sinsang-ni" near the eastern coastal city of Wonsan, South Korean defense ministry spokesman Won Tae-jae said.

This is only the start, I’d expect more tests over the next few days leading up to July 4th. They might be saving something special for that, maybe another underground nuke test.

The “Grand Finally” on the 4th would definitely be a nuke.

There's a good chance it could happen...

U.S. officials have said the North Koreans also appear to be making preparations for a third nuclear test....

I think the long range missile aimed in the direction of Hawaii is still pending launch.

There is no sign of any long range missile launch preperations, no rocket on the pad. They take several days to assemble and fuel so there won’t be any long range missile launch on the 4th.

Thanks, I did not see that in the story. If this administration had any resolve there would be “no sign of a launch pad.”

Maybe they’ll just lob one over to Sasebo , or elsewhere in Japan , as a future warning .

N. Korea test-fires missiles as talks with S. Korea go awry

By Sam Kim
SEOUL, July 2 (Yonhap) — North Korea test-fired two short-range missiles off its east coast on Thursday, officials in Seoul said, just hours after the communist state ended its talks with South Korea without progress over their joint industrial park, the fate of which remains in jeopardy.

The missiles, which appeared to be surface-to-ship ones, “were fired into the East Sea,” South Korean defense ministry spokesman Won Tae-jae said.

“One was fired at 5:20 p.m. and the other at 6:00 p.m. from Sinsang-ni” near the eastern coastal city of Wonsan, he said.

Other officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the missiles landed about 100 kilometers off the coast, where the North had imposed a June 25-July 10 maritime ban for a military drill.

The firing is the first military action North Korea has taken since the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution bolstering sanctions on the communist state for its May 25 nuclear test.

Under the resolution passed on June 13, North Korea is banned from developing and testing missiles and other weapons of mass destruction.

It also comes as a North Korean freighter suspected of carrying such material has reportedly changed course after being tracked by a U.S. Navy destroyer.

Within several days of the nuclear explosion in May, North Korea fired a string of short-range missiles off its east coast. The country is also believed to be preparing to test-launch an intercontinental ballistic missile from the west.

Earlier Thursday, working-level talks between North and South Korea over their joint factory park in the North Korean border city of Kaesong ended without an agreement or a date for another round.

The park is the last surviving cross-border venture born out of the first summit between South and North Korean leaders in 2000, housing over 100 South Korean firms employing 40,000 North Koreans.

South Korean tourism projects in Kaesong were suspended last year amid fraying political ties between the two countries, which remain technically at war after their 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce.

A South Korean worker accused of defaming the North Korean leadership and encouraging a local woman to defect remains detained while North Korea maintains its demand that South Korean firms raise monthly wages four-fold.

North Korea, which conducted its first nuclear test in 2006, launched a long-range rocket that it alone claims carried a satellite into orbit on April 5.

The U.S. and its allies believe it was a disguised form of a ballistic missile theoretically capable of hitting the western U.S.

That should be Japan’s concern, not ours.

It is our concern because 1) they are our allies and B) there are a lot of Americans in Japan - many of which are Navy men and women. One of which happens to be a relative of mine. We have great and many interests in Japan.

This could cause Japan to start down the road of developing their own nukes, simply because zer0 has demonstrated that we can’t be relied upon.

yep, he usually likes to fire them off in bunches. I’d expect more of the same over the next 24-72 hours.

from what i’ve read the foreign food aid to N. Korea has really dried up. some speculate there may be only weeks of food rations left

If my friend is antagonizing a mad man and I advise him not to, that is where my responsibility ends.

Is Japan antagonizing the Norks? I haven't seen that.

As for our troops being in Japan, why?

A base of operations so our ships don't have to go all the way around the world for resupply to start with. Otherwise we are there for strategic advantage. It is in the interest of the United States to have a presence on as many points of the globe as possible.

But the argument that North Korea is about to attack Japan is a false one in the first place.

Are you sure about that? Do you recall the Norks shot missile directly over the island nation? Also they have had many missiles splash down in the Sea of Japan. Those are provocative acts at least.

Which I'm certain they could do in short order (if they haven't already done so). I wouldn't blame them a bit.

Wonder what anti-ship missiles these were? I’ve seen a report that the ranges were of “120 to 160 kilometres”, that would rule out the Styx.

Looks like they are either testing their own new missile (maybe with Iranian help?) or they’ve gotten some anti-ship missiles we weren’t aware they had like the P-800.

North Korea on Thursday test-fired three short-range missiles, fuelling tension sparked by its nuclear standoff, as a US team held talks in China on ways to make UN sanctions bite against Pyongyang.

I believe that we should only go to war after a deliberate debate in Congress and a bill of war has been passed, like the constitution calls for. America is on too sensitive of a hair trigger.

I don't know about the hair trigger. We have been remarkably restrained over the years. But, I do believe Congress and the President should act Constitutionally when it comes to war. We should have formally declared war on Iraq and Afghanistan.

Before America gets in any more wars it should serve our purposes.

As far as I can tell all the wars we have been in served our purposes (interests) in one way or another. We must all remember that it is our obligation, and indeed our duty, to promote and support freedom and liberty where ever it struggles to be heard. It is our obligation not only philosophically or morally speaking, but because it serves the interests of the United States.

Those that seek and wish for "peace" need to understand that liberty through freedom is the only way to true peace and understanding.

They have the largest submarine fleet in the world, yes half of them are minisub’s for special operations and most of the other half are outdated, but still deadly to merchant shipping even if they are not too much of a threat to modern warships.

>> “Like I said, Boogieman Kim.”

What you SAID was “have no navy or air force.” You said it with authority, to make point. It was, at best, an exaggeration.

Kim has nuclear weapons, and medium range missles, and is foolish enough to use them.

Then again, anyone who has ANY respect for BHO is playing the fool.
