U.S. Marines and Afghan security forces moved into Taliban-infested villages Wednesday evening in one of the Obama administration's first major military operations in the previously forgotten war in Afghanistan.
The offensive was launched shortly after 1 a.m. local time in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province. More than 4,000 Marines and an estimated 650 Afghan soldiers and police sought to clear insurgents from towns and villages along the Helmand River Valley before the nation's Aug. 20 presidential election.
Dubbed Operation Khanjar, or "Strike of the Sword," the military push was described by officials as the largest and fastest-moving of the war's newest phase. British forces last week led similar missions to fight and clear out insurgents in Helmand and Kandahar provinces.
"Where we go we will stay, and where we stay, we will hold, build and work toward transition of all security responsibilities to Afghan forces," Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Larry Nicholson said in a statement.

A Big’Ol`Update!!!...;0)...YEEEEEEHAWWWW!!!GITSOME!!!...;0)
That line is COMPLETE BS.
The 1st Marine Expeditionary Force...well over 30k men...took out several Iraqi divisions...and innumerable "resistance forces" throughout Iraq.
Who the hell do they think took Faluja...TWICE!?!?!? In each case there were multiple brigades involved.
While the US Marine Corps still gives lip-service to Divisions, they are a brigade and battalion oriented organization.
Uh, the point of my post was that Obama is a hawk. Contrary to what he promised in his campaign. Don’t tell me about servicemen/women. I have skin in that game.
“the point of my post was that Obama is a hawk”
LOL!
“California Dreaming” - 8,500 Marines choppered in on the White House. “Whomp, Whomp, Whomp” - sounds from Nam.
I misread the heading! I thought they were launching against the White House to liberate an oppressed people cowering in fear of a crazy dictator...
America’s finest doing what they do best. Please hurry home and liberate us next!
LOL,,,”Run,Moozzii,Run!”...;0)
BTTT
Anyone else notice the bias of this first sentence? "Obama's military operations...in the previously forgotten war". Thank heavens B.O. is going to do something since W obviously forgot to. /sarc
because we just announced pullouts from Iraqi cities to show the uninformed some kind of “linkage”.
Wow this must really piss off the anti-war Libs who voted for Obama.
Godspeed, Marines.
God bless them and watch over each one of them and keep them safe.

Because the entire staff of the Hairy Gray Lady is already over there, strapping on suicide vests and preparing to martyr themselves as human shields against the Imperialist Crusaders?
(A guy can dream every once in awhile, can't he?)
I’m retired Air Force, but...
At ‘em Marines!!!! Semper Fi!!

This was taken in Kuwait, during his first deployment.
Thanks for the prayers. We military moms need to support each other.:-)
May God protect each & every one. Including the doggie:)
Release the hounds!
B U M P
Wooo .. brutal .. and it’s 110 degrees. God, St. Michael .. be with them.
Hugs and thanks to you both for raising
such fine men. I have sons. I can’t imagine
as Mother, remembering your sons when they
were 2 or 3 and then looking at them now as
brave and powerfully strong men, doing these
heroics for our freedom.
God be with you and your sons.
The hawk comment was sarcasm folks ! The MSM accused Bush of being a hawk incessantly. Now that Obama the clown is keeping us in the middle east...
Thanks for sharing the picture of your Doc on the ambulance!
....no artillery and no bombs have been dropped from the air all part of an effort to avoid civilian casualties,
