Editorial: Jobs that Americans can't find [media outlet says it's time to enforce immigration law?!]
Scripps Howard ^ | 2009-07-01

Posted on 07/01/2009 12:32:28 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

Blue-collar workers who voted for Barack Obama may want to reconsider their support in light of current unemployment trends. The president is re-opening a campaign for "comprehensive immigration reform" (some call it amnesty) even as jobless rates keep rising.

Legal and illegal immigrants have swelled America's labor force in the recent years. In fiscal 2008, 1.45 million new migrants were granted work permits. Combined with the influx of millions of undocumented workers, this excess supply became the equivalent of the housing bubble -- it was bound to burst.

Since 2007, jobless rates have doubled. In the first quarter of this year, immigrant unemployment stood at 9.7 percent, the highest level since 1994, when data began to be collected on migrants. Overall unemployment topped 8.6 percent, also the highest in 15 years.

The blue-collar sector has been hit especially hard. Some 31 million native-born and immigrant workers with a high-school degree or less are now jobless. Unemployment in this category is now a record 14.7 percent for immigrants and 19.5 percent for natives.

Not surprisingly, northbound movement across America's southern border has slowed. Without prospects of a job, there's less incentive to come.

But if the Obama administration and congressional Democrats enact yet another "regularization" of undocumented workers, the U.S. workforce will artificially inflate -- further depressing wages. A continued surfeit of workers is red meat for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, so the Obama administration can count on bipartisan aid from the likes of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and other "business Republicans."

A better course would be strictly enforcing existing immigration laws.

"If the United States chose to more vigorously enforce immigration laws over the next year and this resulted in one or two million illegal workers deciding to leave, it could significantly improve the employment prospects of our poorest and least educated workers," said Steven Camarota and Karen Jensenius of the Washington-based Center for Immigration Reform.

That's a plan that might actually work for workers.

Frankly, we should be running illegal immigrant candidates in places where Republicans will never win (like San Francisco).

What would lib politicians say? Why they’d suddenly sound like “racist” conservatives....

Except for the fact that a lot of poor Americans don’t want to work, particularly when the wages they get don’t keep body and soul together. Only reason the Mexicans can do it is that they also live cheap, 14 or so in one house, and do not spend as much at the mall as real Americans.

Maybe the better answer is amnesty, with mandated higher wages by employers while locking the durn border down good and tight for a change. Plus, put employers in the hoosegow when they cheap out and hire the illegals.

In a great Second City routine from the early sixties, Severn Darden asked the question, “do fish think?” The answer is, “yes, but to slowly”.
I fear this is going to apply to our Country in a big way.

It's the media workers' fault for not learning Spanish. They've got to be able to communicate in the language that their audience uses.

No amnesty is not the answer. I don’t think anyone should get to be a US citizen for nothing. Most aren’t planning on staying or trying to fit in, anyway.

As far as wages, here in Texas, they make as much as anyone else for the jobs they do. That wage thing is a myth.

I had to puzzle over this one a bit. However, as soon as I applied the dictum that says that most MSM editorials are usually self-serving, it was easy!

Unemployment is finally hitting home for those who work for, use to work for, or soon will no longer work for the MSM, as well as the unemployment they are surrounded by amongst their friends, neighbors and families. Self-interest finally woke up these elite morons to the perils of unmitigated illegal immigrations and/or the legalization of tens of millions of illegal workers. I imagine that it's not helping that most will be losing their own jobs within three or so years, have few transferable skills, and will be entering a job market hammered by stagflation. Well boys and girls of the MSM, guess ya'll are reaping what you sowed!

California could balance their budget in less than 30 days if they have the guts to do so. The same applies to the rest of the USA.

There need to be raids and deportations of illegals.
Raid employers- Raid jails—Raid homes- WHATEVER it takes.
Raid ALL the Western Union locations on a Friday and Saturday in particular. The banks that are doing money transfers need to be raided, also. Raid the shelters in the Home Depot locations, where they congregate for day work for cash. Raid every street intersection—Raid Nancy Pelosi’s family run restaurants. Raid roofing companies, nurseries, boarding stables, (there are more horses in Los Angeles County than any other county in the whole USA & whether in boarding stables or back yards, illegals are the main laborers who clean stalls & feed) farms, ranches, and restaurants. Raid the hotel and casinos in Las Vegas in Harry Reid’s backyard. Lots of illegals there!!! Raid the homeless shelters where we spend more money trying to ‘help. RAID WHATEVER IT TAKES TO CLEAN THEM OUT.!!

The entire country has become a mass of ENABLERS!!! Call me anything you wish— but you cannot call me wrong.

We cannot keep bleeding money that goes to people who are not supposed to be here in the first place. Taxing me thru property taxes to educate kids who don’t belong here is just PLAIN WRONG!!! Taxing me to support homeless shelters that are populated by people who couldn’t keep off the streets in their own country is just plain WRONG!! Causing me to pay over 1/3 of my auto insurance just for “uninsured motorists coverage” because of the influx of illegals is just plain WRONG. !! That ‘uninsured motorist coverage’ used to cost me only a DOLLAR a MONTH!!
Now it is over $35 a month and climbing. And I drive old cars!!

End the sanctuary cities. Stop ALL Federal funding to cities/counties who try to continue this behavior. It is a shell game. San Francisco was giving ‘vpcational education’ to troublemakers there, without even determining their legal status to even be here. Certainly not a good use for taxpayer money. Ask the firemen who had their station shut down due to budget cuts. Ask the homewoners who might pay higher fire insurance and get slower response because of such closures...but illegals got “VOCATIONAL TRAINING” for jobs they could not legally hold!!!!! Kamela Harris- the DA of San Fran should be fired, tarred, and feathered, IMO!!! Newsome is no better!!

Make it darn clear that if you are here illegally, you no longer will be tolerated! You have no place to hide. Your number is up. Get out on your own while the getting out is good.

END WELFARE to the deadbeats who have lived multiple generations on it. The gravy train has stopped and is stuck in place on the tracks!!!!

SCREEN every single welfare recipient with a new set of eyes. Not the same old crap. Purple finger them and their kids when they are being screened, so that they cannot come in again under another name and filed for duplicate services. Don’t tell me it doesn’t happen!! I worked in Los Angeles with a woman who was still getting WELFARE from CHICAGO while she was working at a good job in LA!! She flew back every 3 months for an ‘interview” for her continued services.

Put everyone of the welfare recipients into jobs that they can do, but won’t do, which the illegals have been doing. Get them on a real payroll-get them paying taxes and make them citizens who have a stake in the outcome. Then they can really buy a house- without the NINJA loans that collapsed the whole banking system. Paying to train a legal citizen worker for a job that an illegal intruder has been doing is far cheaper and has an end date. That increases their earning capacity, and helps all of the economy by having better trained workers. The only skills welfare recipients seem to have is in the area of procreation.

Getting illegals out of the country takes the strain out of the schools, where hundreds of thousands of illegals and their kids are getting free education. The recent layoff of teachers combined with the removal of the kids who have no business here will balance that problem out. Adult illegals are attending night and weekend classes for a number of pieces of education. Let them learn English as a 2nd language in their OWN COUNTRY- and make that grasp of ENGLISH- read/write/hear/spell a mandatory condition of coming back thru the line LEGALLY.

Get them out of the health systems, and there will be NO NEED for “National Health” programs. Training nurses and other medical staff to speak many languages is another drain on resources. Bleeding more money!!!

Identify the illegals in the justice system, declare them NOT EVER eligible—no matter the severity of the crime to ever be allowed into this country again. The worst of the offenders need to finish their time here, and then be sent back to country of origin, under guard, and turned over to authorities south of the border, never to be allowed to return, under any circumstances. Perhaps Mexico and the other countries could adopt the 3 strikes laws like California has, and count the records of these miscreants of activity inside the USA when they apply their new laws for 3 strikes. We have been a dumping ground for too many of their criminals.

Fine EMPLOYERS who continue to try to hire illegals and make that fine so HARSH that even Nancy Pelosi and all her family restaurants in Northern California will think twice before they hire another one. Fine the homewoners and contractors who do day work hiring. Let them hire a welfare recipient off a list of skills they have. If you can call a union hall for a worker, you can call a state employment office just as easily.

Go thru the DMV driver’s license records. Are there hundreds of thousands of illegals with driver’s licenses? Hell, yes. Then they drop their insurance- and you get hit by an UNINSURED driver!!! Get them stripped of their driver’s licenses. Impound their cars, so they don’t drive at all, endangering all of us who are doing it right. Driving anywhere in the USA with no skills at communication in English and allowing them to take tests in ANY OTHER language is ABSURD!! It is also an insult to those of us who have to deal with such driver’s in case of an accident. What does it cost to train a cop or fireman to converse in 3 or 4 or more different languages??? We are bleeding money here!!
Get them off the voters rolls! ACORN will no longer be allowed to have a say in voter registration, either. ACORN is part of the problem-—not part of the solution.

If the ACLU thinks this is harsh- let them find a compound where the ACLU can feed, clothe, house, and educate them until everything is sorted out. Let them bear the costs and see up close what kinds of problems these people bring into the USA.

Vigilante behavior is right around the corner, IMO, with the current state of affairs, and the tipping point will something so vague or small that we all will be surprised at the actual event, but not surprised at the anger that it will spark.

The number of 20 millio illegals was used as far back as 35 years in California and the USA.

I believe the number is much closer to 50 million...and that ACORN got a great %% of them registered and voting in 2008. Dick Morris has used the figure of 13 million non-qualified voters being active in the Nov 2008 election, with an estimate of the same tactics being used in 2012 and NObama targeting getting 18 million doing the same thing in Nov of 2012.
The bulk of those non-eligible voters are thought to have voted for NObama, and this is the harvet we are reaping for those actions.

They came to work and send money back home.””

By living as many as 30 to a house, and ‘hot-sheeting’ the sleeping arrangements, they send millions of dollars south of the border.
Oil is the biggest source of income for Mexico- and the money the illegals send back south is the 2nd biggest source of Mexico income. It is possible that those 2 items have switched places in the past few months, with white Americans losing their jobs.

Put a 100% fee onto every dollar transferred- could fund the war in the Middle east in a month!!!

“In fiscal 2008, 1.45 million new migrants were granted work permits.”

Okay. PAY ATTENTION! What does this mean? AND KEEP IT IN MIND the next time someone (like LaRaza & their media) says we allow only 1 million ‘legal entries’ into this country per year and don’t allow enough people to legally immigrate!

More than 1 million people became citizens in 2008*

That’s 2.5 million legal ‘immigrants’ a year right there.

This does not count ‘student visas’ or ‘vistor visas’ which the government admits half don’t go home.

This does not include “asylum’ seekers....hard to tell, but I would venture another million. In one year we got 6figures of them from Honduras alone.

What this means is we allow 4 to 5 MILLION LEGAl entries per year! Mosty from MEXICO*

Amnesty has to be defeated!

Couldn't agree more AuntB.  Something like that had to be taking place for the numbers of illegals to be almost constant at 10 million for the last nine years.

We are being royally screwed by our government.  What's 45 to 50 million people in ten years?  /s

The following is directed to all Freepers in general.

Some Freepers see everything through a red, white, and blue filter.  Lets prove right now how many of us do.  1% of the Freepathon total has been reached.

“As far as wages, here in Texas, they make as much as anyone else for the jobs they do. That wage thing is a myth.”

Yes, often they do. But it does not cost the employer as much. They get paid under that table. Here’s the point sent by another freeper:

Joe Legal vs. Joe Illegal

Here is an example of why hiring illegal aliens is not economically productive for the State of California...

You have 2 families...”Joe Legal” and “Jose Illegal”. Both families have 2 parents, 2 children and live in California.

“Joe Legal” works in construction, has a Social Security Number, and makes $25.00 per hour with payroll taxes deducted.

“Jose Illegal” also works in construction, has “NO” Social Security Number, and gets paid $15.00 cash “under the table”.

Joe Legal...$25.00 per hour x 40 hours $1000.00 per week, $52,000 per year. Now take 30% away for state federal tax. Joe Legal now has $31,231.00.

Jose Illegal...$15.00 per hour x 40 hours $600.00 per week, $31,200.00 per year. Jose Illegal pays no taxes. Jose Illegal now has $31,200.00.

Joe Legal pays Medical and Dental Insurance with limited coverage, $1,000.00 per month, $12,000.00 per year. Joe Legal now has $19,231.00.

Jose Illegal has full Medical and Dental coverage through the state and local clinics at a cost of $0.00 per year. Jose Illegal still has $31,200.00.

Joe Legal makes too much money is not eligible for Food Stamps or welfare. Joe Legal pays for food, $1,000.00 per month, $12,000.00 per year. Joe Legal now has $7,231.00

Jose Illegal has no documented income and is eligible for Food Stamps and Welfare. Jose Illegal still has $31,200.00.

Joe Legal pays rent of $1,000.00 per month, $12,000.00 per year. Joe Legal is now in the hole. Minus (-) $4,769.00.

Jose Illegal receives a $500.00 per month Federal rent subsidy. Jose Illegal pays rent $500.00 per month, $6,000.00 per year. Jose Illegal still has $25,200.00.

Joe Legal now works overtime on Saturdays or gets a part time job after work.

Jose Illegal has nights and weekends off to enjoy with his family.

Joe Legal’s and Jose Illegal’s children both attend the same school. Joe Legal pays for his children’s lunches while Jose Illegal’s children get a government sponsored lunch.

Jose Illegal’s children have an after school ESL program. Joe Legal’s children go home.

Joe Legal and Jose Illegal both enjoy the same Police and Fire Services, but Joe paid for them and Jose did not pay.

THIS IS NOT A PARTY ISSUE: IT’S A COMMON SENSE ISSUE...

Don’t vote OR support any politician that supports illegal aliens...

Make it a point to know how your representative votes, State and Federal.....

It’s PAST time to take a stand for America and Americans!

Or, the Government could just enforce the damn laws and stop devaluing its lawfully-present population (citizens and foreign national permanent residents).

And, it's impossible to value the lives lost to illegal alien drunk drivers and gang bangers in any currency that exists.

Another reason they can do it is because "poor Maria" goes to the welfare office and claims the Pablo deserted her and the four bambinos, (one of which has medical problems) and needs food stamps, aid to families with dependent children, WIC, section 8 housing, aid with utilities, and on and on.

You are probably correct if not illegals then H1-Bs who can undercut the wages of the American college miseducated liberal. Then the cap & tax will make it so expensive to run an office building in America they will close the papers here and ship them off to be run in China or India.

RIGHT ON!! This one GREAT POST! You’ve go to live here to write it the way you did. Yes, we pay for them every which way possible. Look at your utility bills, all padded up with Public Purpose Surcharges, Low Income Sewer Surcharges, LOW Income Discount Programs galore, all written in Spanish to make sure you get the message. Never mind all the billions in bond measures that will be on our tax bills forever. I don’t ever remember bond measures imposed on us like they until THEY CAME.
