A U.S. federal probe has found that about a third of American Apparel's factory workers in the Los Angeles area had supplied suspect or invalid records and were not authorized to work in the United States.
The findings, from a January 2008 federal investigation, may deal a blow to the corporation's image as a proponent of immigration reform.
But the company said on Tuesday the potential loss of those 1,800 workers would have no significant impact on its results.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency found that some 1,600 current employees at American Apparel's Los Angeles factories appeared to have gained employment due to "suspect and not valid" eligibility documentation, the company said in a filing.
The probe also found that the employment eligibility of an additional 200 workers could not be verified due to discrepancies, it said.
American Apparel said it could not accurately assess the impact on its operations from losing the employees, but said it did not believe any such loss would have a materially adverse impact on financial results.
"The company believes that its current surplus levels of inventory and manufacturing capacity would mitigate the adverse impact of any disruption to its manufacturing activities that may potentially result from the loss of these employees," American Apparel said in the filing.
"ICE's notification provided no indication that the company knowingly or intentionally hired unauthorized aliens and no criminal charges have been filed against the Company or any current employees," it added.
The company, known for its colorful T-shirts and other basics worn by urban hipsters, has made immigration reform a central theme of its corporate message.
Chief Executive Dov Charney has called for the legalization of foreign workers, and the company has used "Legalize LA" as a slogan on billboards and T-shirts.

ping!
Irony ping.
They should probe our current president.
Ok - now is the time for all you designer fashion lovers to recognize the truth about the industry. Calvin, Ralph and that uber lib lover, Donna Karan, all make their ill-gotten gains by milking the under-paid, illegal and/or over-seas worker and swanning off to NYC cocktail parties or multi-million dollar props and sleeping very well at night. It’s shameful, hypocritical (’cause they are ALL libs..)and should not be supported by patronage. Boycott the bast*rd libtards in the fashion industry...
Plenty of citizens that could do those jobs. Unfortunately American Apparel isn’t interested in payiong a decent American wage to American people. 11.5% of the people in California are unemployed and should be doing those jobs.
This is the ROOT CAUSE of illegal immigration. Businesses want cheap labor.
We spend too much time focusing on Democrats and the bleeding-heart left as a cause for illegal immigation. It is business that drives up illegal immigration. This is why so many RINOs won’t do anything about it. To quote Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) when asked about illegal immigration: “If we stop illegal immigration, who will pick our crops?”
Until we start to focus on business as the cause of illegal immigration, we won’t reduce it.
Bingo, we can’t change the democratic party, but we can oust the snobby elitists and heads of “international” companies out of the party by voting out all the RINOS who reprsent them. They put green before Red, white and blue.
Jobs Americans won't do because they get better handouts from the government.
The irritating fact is these illegals are willing to do the work at the wages offered...and make a life in America for themselves.
I say deport 1800 California lifelong welfare recipients.

American Apparel made by ILLEGALS.
******
Now we know where Michelle Obama has been buying her clothes!
“no indication that the company knowingly or intentionally hired unauthorized aliens”
Wink wink, nod nod.
Soon to be renamed “Mexican Apparel”
What jobs are not being lost in Obummer’s depression are being given to illegals and his ACORN buddies.
After they are done fingering them, deport their asses to wherever they came from.
I was in Los Angeles from 1964 to 1993.
A third tells me that no one at ICE is doing their jobs.
TIP: ICE needs to go to Home Depot locations all around the entire area. ILLEGALS are in every parking lot trying to find day work for cash.
TIP: Go to every Western Union location on Fridays and Saturdays during entire length of working hours. Illegals are sending massive amounts of money out of this country back south of the border.
INDICT Western Union and get their records to see just how much money is going SOUTH and never being spent in this country. Lots of that money going south is used to bring more illegals north of the borders.
11.5% of the people in California are unemployed and should be doing those jobs.”
Recipe for balancing California budget:
Send all illegals back south of the border. Do sweeps until they are gone. Stop money transfers at Western Union and complicit banks who are sending money also.
Stop paying welfare to able-bodied men and women.
Have the welfare recipients take over the jobs that the illegals have been holding.
Who will lose? The banks and Western Union.
The rest is a win-win-win for the entire country.
Repeat above in each and every state in the union!!!!

Baloney. Now they will have to pay decent wages to Americans - that's why they hired illegals.
Knowing what I do about American Apparel (we won’t buy from them unless a customer requests it because the owner is a lefty perv) I don’t think they care if their employees are legal or not.
I know where the factory is and everyone else in the downtown core knows it too. Am App is owned by a libtard Canadian with a green card who posts paper notices for illegals in the downtown if they know how to sew..in Spanish. I’ve seen them a couple of times when I go for my consultant job in the Fashion District.

Only 1/3 eh ???
When are they goiung to check out the other 2/3 workers ???
That’s a gay headline.
This is the company where protestors against illegal immigration showed up and the employees of American Apparel were bragging about hirig illegals and harassing the protestors. Glad to see they are nabbed.
No argument there. We have a government run by Corporate America under the guise of a Two-Party system.
why does business want cheap labor? business needs cheap labor so they can compete on a local, state, national, international scale. America is in a global market and is competing against countries like china, japan ,Taiwan, southamerica, e.u, and the pacific rim countries and they all pay pennies on the dollar for wages.
Aye, there's the rub. I would argue mentioning the EU though as their wages equal or exceed ours in the majority of cases. I have no problem in competing with them, or any country paying near-parity wages. In those cases, we're competing against expertise and innovation and I feel we can hold our own or exceed in that area.
How long can America pay American middle class wages and still compete in the global market?
They can't. That's why we have (or used to have) a middle class and the Third Worlders don't.
dont get me wrong i want the illegals out, and Americans to have good jobs. but our fight is not just illegals its well beyond that,...
Here's where we depart. Our fight IS with the illegals, in part, for under the scenario you provide, if American companies can't export jobs to the low wage countries, they import them via the illegals and H1-Bs. If we ever got to the point of having Americans making the same Third World wages and living in huts, the companies would STILL go overseas because of the benefits.
One poster had a 20-minute YouTube video of an Australian team checking out the labor situation in China. They interviewed one of many people who have contracted silicosis after working in a gem polishing factory. She will be dead in a few years. The factory offered three months wages to the affected workers and booted them out. When the woman went to management for more for her survivors, she was told, "You are incurable. Go away and die." THAT's what we're competing against.
. . . its about rebuilding America.
That ain't gonna happen, under the present regulations. While machinery can be re-imported, the factories to house them have been razed to the ground to save on property taxes. Trying building a new one under the current maze of environmental (read anti-industry) regulations, let alone the others. The transition from a manufacturing (wealth creating) to a service (wealth distributing) economy has doomed the middle class. We are heading for a two-class country with the prols serving the elites. It's taken us 40 years to get this far and the end is not too distant, barring some major political upheaval.
There's a neat rock song called "The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades". That title has a ring of irony for todays workers.
