Sarah Palin story sparks Republican family feud
Politico ^ | June 30, 2009 | JONATHAN MARTIN

Posted on 07/01/2009 7:27:15 AM PDT by Virginia Ridgerunner

A hard-hitting piece on Sarah Palin in the new Vanity Fair has touched off a blistering exchange of insults among high-profile Republicans over last year’s GOP ticket – tearing open fresh wounds about leaks surrounding Palin and revealing for the first time some of the internal wars that paralyzed the campaign in its final days.

Rival factions close to the McCain campaign have been feuding since last fall over Palin , usually waging the battle in the shadows with anonymous quotes. Now, however, some of the most well-known names in Republican politics are going on-the-record with personal attacks and blame-casting.

William Kristol, the editor of The Weekly Standard and at times an informal adviser to Sen. John McCain, touched off the latest back-and-forth Tuesday morning with a post on his magazine’s blog criticizing the Todd Purdum-authored Palin story and pointing a finger at Steve Schmidt, McCain’s campaign manager.

Yawn, Gov Palin is being attacked by the same hack sore loser Republican-Democrats who slammed GWB after McCain lost in the 2000 primary.

McCain's goons spend years smearing Pres Bush after their loss.

Sissified water-boys for the MSM.

Politico is not a news organization. They are a propaganda outlet for Obama and his Democrat/Marxists. I don’t trust anything they say.

But when Obama crashes and burns, Politico will crash with him.

Schmidt said: “His allegation that I was defaming Palin by alleging post-partum depression at the campaign headquarters is categorically untrue. In fact, I think it rises to the level of a slander because it’s about the worst thing you can say about somebody who does what I do for a living.”

He admits to being the one. He just thinks that in doing so he wasn't trying to defame her.

Thanks for posting. I hope all posters from yesterday see this. From the article:

Kristol cited a passage in Purdum’s piece in which “some top aides” were said to worry about the Alaska governor’s “mental state” and the prospect that the Alaska governor may be suffering from post-partum depression following the birth of her son Trig. “In fact, one aide who raised this possibility in the course of trashing Palin’s mental state to others in the McCain-Palin campaign was Steve Schmidt,” Kristol wrote.

But Kristol’s charge was seconded by Randy Scheunemann, a longtime foreign policy adviser to McCain who is also close to the Standard editor and was thought to be a Palin ally within the campaign.

“Steve Schmidt has a congenital aversion to the truth,” Scheunemann said. “On two separate and distinct occasions, he speculated about about Governor Palin having post-partum depression, and on the second he threatened that if more negative publicity about the handling of Governor Palin emerged that he would leak his speculation [about post-partum depression] to the press. It was like meeting Tony Soprano.”

and Steve Schmidt's response:

Asked about the accusation, Schmidt fired back in an e-mail: “I'm sure John McCain would be president today if only Bill Kristol had been in charge of the campaign.”

Spoken like the liberal sissy he is.

It’s impossible to prove, but without a rock-conservative like Palin on the ticket Johnny would have been the new Dukakis. Such as it is, the milky toasts in the campaign office do a 180 and blame Sarah for their close loss, a loss that would have been an embarrassing landslide (and career killer for much of the campaign staff) had Sarah not pulled more than her share of the rope.

Very true. A post on politico pointed out that the author of the Vanity Fair smear, Todd Purdum, is a registered Democrat, and married to Bill Clinton’s press secretary, Dee Dee Myers.

Well, the key information I took away from this article, the Kristol-Schmidt s*** fight notwithstanding, is that it pretty much confirms that Nicolle Wallace and/or her husband were behind the the “diva” leaks at the end of the campaign. Scheunemann told Kristol about it, and then Schmidt tried to fire Scheunemann for defending Governor Palin by exposing Wallace.

There is no "feud". The ONLY source for the Vanity Fair piece was Steve Schmidt. this was confirmed to me by my Vanity Fair contact.

Steve Schmidt is a social liberal who wants the GOP to embrace gay marriage. Is there anything else you need to know? Does anyone expect someone who supports "gay rights" and abortion-on-demand like other RINOs to want Sarah Palin to lead the party?

The only "feud" is between Steve Schmidt and Republicans. I suggest he end the feud by just becoming a Democrat, with whom he agrees about 75% of the time.

McCain has spent the past 35 years “getting even” with a nation which left him to rot in Hanoi. At least, that is the way he views it. His contempt for the US is palpable...breathtaking. So anything he can do to revenge himself on the public, such as creating 50 million illegal voters, will put a wry, twisted smile on that hypocritical, treasonous face.

You wrote McCain never wanted to win.

I think that statement is the bottom line and his lousy campaign personnel are looking for someone to blame. If they admitted they threw the election, they would look like the jerks they are and it would confirm—McCain doesn’t hold firm conservative values. He was a war hero and God Bless him for his service but he has never held to firm conservative values (McCain -Finegold)

Rival factions close to the McCain campaign have been feuding since last fall over Palin

The McCain campaign has no one to blame but themselves -- specifically, supporting the $700 billion bailout of the financial sector. But McCain was such a weak candidate he probably would've lost anyway.

Spoken like the liberal sissy he is.

You've got that right, here is one of the gems he dropped back in April:

There is a sound conservative argument to be made for same-sex marriage. I believe conservatives, more than liberals, insist that rights come with responsibilities. No other exercise of one’s liberty comes with greater responsibilities than marriage. It cannot be argued that marriage between people of the same sex is un American or threatens the rights of others.

- Steve Schmidt to Log Cabin Republicans - April 2009

He also bashed religious conservatives:

McCain Strategist Warns GOP Risks Becoming 'Religious Party'

That boy needs to learn where his bread is buttered or change affiliations.

Is this because Sarah Palin will run for President in 2012?
Is it because McCain is also planning a yet ANOTHER run AGAIN for President in 2012???
Are they trying to trash this woman and her family because of an agenda???

Me thinketh they protest too much.
Me thinketh they are afraid of Governor Palin.
Me thinketh they have good reason.

President Sarah Palin 2001
Vice President choice??? Not McCain I’m sure.

I see this “infighting” and “finger pointing” as a final bringing to the surface of what has been (and still is) wrong with the GOP. RINOs need to be shown the door. The drag they create within the party is stifling. McCain (et al) needs to be shown the door.

The GOP needs some catharsis and cleansing, and if Sarah Palin becomes the catalyst for positive change, God bless her even more!

The left fears a unified conservative GOP. Ironically, they are actually being instrumental in making it happen. With the seemingly orchestrated attacks on Gov. Palin, the left exposes its true nature. It’s an ugly and power-hungry beast that seeks to devour anyone or anything that stands in the way of that power.

The core of American values remain conservative. We hold dear our individual and God-given rights. The contrast between left and conservative has never been greater than it is right now. With a truly conservative GOP, we can reclaim our country before the coastal elites start referring to themselves as “comrades”. (IMHO!)
