Sex scandals like Governor Sanfords and John Ensigns are private matters that dont affect public policy and shoot down rising political stars. Its time to end hypocrisy in America.
When I first heard about Governor Sanfords sex scandal, I was flooded with disappointment for many reasons. Particularly since his admission of an extramarital affair came so closely after Nevada Senator Ensign made a similar confession. I dont know if its the fact that I am younger, or that just have a more open-minded view of politicians and sex, but its of very little concern to me who elected officials sleep with. Frankly, I think all of that is a private matter between a husband and wife, even if it is made public. Beyond that, life is complicated. And I cant even imagine how complicated it must get after 20 years of marriage and four kids.
Of the times I have spent with Governor Sanford, I remember his family being absolutely beautiful in that way Southern families often are. I remember my dad describing his boys as all looking just like Huckleberry Finn. In other words, theirs was the very definition of a picture-perfect political family. It never crossed my mind that there would be any kind of scandal one day, but, especially in politics, you cant judge a book by its cover.
But what goes on in Governor Sanfords personal life, I believe, just isnt relevant to his role as a public official.

Sanford ping!
She should learn how to imagine it because she will probably never experience it.
STFU daughter of McInsane.
You're daddy abandoned his first wife with three little kiddies. Yes, he paid her off as he relived his adolescence after coming back from Nam but it doesn't make him much better in the cheating department.
Her shallowness is awesome.
Isn’t she still single?
She’s so open-minded that her brains fell out long ago.
Thanks for the spew.
I’ll pass as I have no desire to promote things Meghan.
Except that, integrity matters. Character matters. Two things Meghan McCain wouldn't know anything about.
Why do we post Meghan McCain? Her father is bad enough but I suppose he is at least deserving of being heard..what with being a war hero, a senator and a candidate for POTUS and all...
Ah, Meghan,Meghan,Meghan.
You say holding a man to his marital vows is an “impossible standard”.
Is it also an “impossible standard” to take his Constitutional Duties seriously?
Your idea of “standards” have produced Barry Hussein, who violates his Oath of Office every day.
“And I cant even imagine how complicated it must get after 20 years of marriage and four kids.”
I’d think it gets rather uncomplicated by that point. 7 years? Childish, but I get it. You feel trapped, like you’re missing out, etc. But 20 years? Unless your wife is beating you, or does something else unforgivable, by that point you should know there isn’t much more to life. And 4 kids? Was there ever a better reason not to cheat?
I forgive Sanford until January 2011, because his Lt. Governor is a fag, and I don’t want a gay governor in SC. It’s bad enough there is already a gay senator. We need to get behind that Indian chick who is running. Anyone but Andre Bauer.
>>Isnt she still single?
No, she’s a double-wide.
Will no one rid us of this pesky bimbo?
If the man has no problem lying to his wife and kdis, what makes you think that he would have no problem lying to his constituents, which he did.
Would this be the same McCain that admits having sex outside of marriage? Surprise, surprise. What else do you expect from a nasty ho? Wonder how many married men have pushed that no pest strip aside and had her in bed?
You nailed the problem.
Waiting in the wings is a pork barrel loving RINO who will set about destroying this state. He’ll push a liberal agenda, raise taxes, steal money, kiss obuma’s ghetto butt and do what he can to block consevatives running for the governorship.
Lincoln was smart and didn’t fire his best general - Grant - because he was a drunk. Sometimes in war you have to rely on morally flawed men. And we are in a war.
People calling for Sanford’s resignation are the reason why we’re in trouble. But if people can thump their chests, look to heaven and yell “See how moral I am” well then firing Sanford is okay. It’s why the Republican party is known as the stupid party.
Meghan McCain should have written: Sex scandals like Governor Sanfords and John Ensigns (and my dad's) are private matters that dont affect public policy and shoot down rising political stars. Its time to end hypocrisy in America.
You used to term "rising political stars". Please, don't flatter yourself. Politicians aren't stars, like movie actors. "Stars" entertain and amuse us.
At best, politicians, are power-grubbing, parasitic servants. Servants work for us at our whim, and can be replaced. We vote them in and out with regularity.
On their best day, politicians root around for power and favors. They aren't glamorous, and they aren't stars except insofar as we allow them to remain in their positions until we tire of them.
Unless the next opposition candidate who comes along runs on a platform of "A new broom sweeps clean", and drives home the point that the Republicans can't police their own, in which case the office of Governor might go a Democrat.
The Governor preceding Sanford was a Democrat (Jim Hodges, iirc) so it could happen.
Thanks for the laugh.
Democrats don’t vote for democrats based on morality, honesty or “policing” good government.
Democrats dont vote for democrats based on morality, honesty or policing good government.
Generally, I'd say that you are correct, Democrats probably don't care as much about morality issues. That isn't to say that none of them care, or that Independents don't care, though.
Democrats aren't the only people to vote for Democrat candidates, and Republicans aren't the only people who vote for Republican candidates, are they? Some moderate Republicans, Democrats, and Unaffiliated voters, more than enough to sway many elections, will vote either way.
An example: In Colorado, (my state) the number of:
Registered Republicans: around 1,029,000.
Registered Democrats: 955,000
Registered Unaffiliated: 1,202,000
From the Colorado Secretary of State's office(pops to a new window, pdf file)
There are more Republicans than Democrats, yet the current governor of Colorado is... Bill Ritter, A Democrat. Additionally, Obama won Colorado (^) with more votes than there are Democrats - some Unaffiliated and Republican voters had to have voted for him.
Not only do voters jump ship during elections, but some others, disgusted with the offering of their party, will stay home and allow the other party's candidate to be elected. If you look at the Colorado results again, you will notice that McCain got less votes than the total number of registered Republicans.
So laugh all you want to, but ignore fence-sitters of all stripes at your own risk.
Many of the same people who put the Democrat in as governor immediately proceeding Mark Sanford can put another one in his place in the next election. I'd like to see that not come to pass.
“Generally, I’d say that you are correct, Democrats probably don’t care as much about morality issues. That isn’t to say that none of them care, or that Independents don’t care, though.”
If these democrats and independents cared about morality, they would never vote for democrats. It’s that simple. So people can play games with themselves and imagine that democrats and independents are voting for democrats because they’re moral or honest, but in the end, it’s just that - their imagination.
I agree, though, with your assessment that people stay home and not vote because of disgust toward the candidate the party is offering. That’s why we need good, conservative candidates to bring the stay-at-home voters out. We need more Reagan-like candidates. Enough of tired horses like McCain and Dole. Those guys couldn’t be wiped fast enough to find an outhouse if they had to pee. Mr. McCain deflated like a balloon on ice during the home stretch. Without Sarah, he probably would’ve lost by 15 points.
Anyway, good speaking with you. Keep up the good Freeper fight.
