Discussing disgraced South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a fellow Republican, said governors and other national leaders are expected to live by a higher standard because
the culture of the nation can be hurt by their failings.
Seeing this family become healed is our highest priority, Romney said on NBCs Meet the Press.
At the same time, and not commenting particularly on Governor Sanford,
people in public life ought to be held to a higher standard.
I heard one
former governor say, Well, everybody makes mistakes. Well, thats true.
But not all mistakes are the same. And not everybody is a governor or a senator or a president. And we expect [those] people to live by a higher standard, because what they do is going to be magnified, their families are going to be hurt more by what they do, the things they care about will be hurt, and the culture of the nation and the people who follow them will be hurt.

You're right, Mitt. We the people should hold our politicians accountable to a higher standard. However, in that case, you fail.

Shut up, Romney. If you had any guts whatsoever, if you weren’t a complete, walk-on-eggshells puke during your campaign, if you had been even partially willing to stand up for right and wrong, and tell the truth, we wouldn’t have a communist in the White House right now.
So shut up. You had your chance (chances) and you let all of us down. You are a lightweight phony.

ALL people should try to live good, clean lives. That being said, so many politicians are genuine scum bags. Clinton got elected twice. And Mitt, although a liberal Republican, does appear to have a squeaky clean lifestyle, got crushed in 1994 by Uncle Teddy, who should have been jailed for vehicular homicide and expelled from the U.S. Senate 40 years ago.

the culture of the nation can be hurt by their failings. Oh for corn's sake ... this is the worst way I have ever heard it put. The " 'culture of the nation' can be hurt"?? How about our very security??!! Mitt, it's not a *higher standard*, it is that elected officials are endowed with the Public Trust, it it the first obligation of the citizen/voter to determine whether or not the candidate is TRUSTWORTHY.
This is why the past of any candidate is fair game to investigate, this is why there is no *privacy zone* for those seeking or elected to office. This is why we, the citizenry, have the right to know the background, history, character of our officials. If you don't want to deal with it, if you don't want this stuff splashed all over the media, if you want to keep your spouse in the dark while you betray the promise/vow, then YOU DON'T SEEK PUBLIC OFFICE. It is as simple as that.

Oh please. See Ben Franklin, etc. Romney's comment is an example of hubris. As if the culture of the nation is determined by its leaders. The reverse might be argued, "decadent people elect decadent leaders," but to contend that leadership establishes the moral quality of those who are choosing the leaders is just flat out error.

I recently talked with my congressman and told him that I had very little respect for anything associated with D.C. and that I was of the opinion that until term limits were imposed on congress there was little possibility of any "change". He looked at me like I was from another planet and simply said, "that'll never happen-no way!)

Now, however much that might be true, I won’t accuse someone of being unworthy for President of the United States, because of some physical defect...
However, being a member of a non-Christian cult group... no way he’s gonna get a significant number of Christians voting for such a cult-group member.
And while others disqualified Romney on the basis of his liberal politics, I never even got to the stage of examining those politics before I disqualified him, right off the bat, for being a member of a non-Christian cult group...

Predictably, all the usual suspects have taken a break from snake-handling and playing “Dueling Banjos” to bash Mitt.
Romney is absolutely right about this. And I’m sure all those who are loudly denying it here were also loudly complaining about how Clinton’s antics lowered the standards of the nation.
The fact is, the people who pile on with the anti-Romney garbage pretty much confirm all the worst stereotypes about conservatives.

Higher standard??? What does that mean? Has the country fallen so far that living marriage vows given before God, family, friends and strangers constitutes "higher standards"?? Does being trustworthy for your spouse and children constitute higher standards these days??
Clearly, I am too naive to be living in 2009. These higher standards used to be what was normal and not living by them meant you were scum. To say something this stupid affirms for me once again that Mitt is not President material. But being this naive, what do I know...

"Vanity: Team Romney Sabotaged Palin and Continuing to Do So?"

Poor sport spoiler Romney doing what he does best:
Novak: "Fred Thompson drop-out rumors traced to Romney campaign"
Said Novak: "The rumors were traced in part to Mitt Romney's campaign,
trying to stir up strife between McCain and Thompson."
"Despite outspending his rivals by huge margins throughout the primaries,
(Mitt Romney, Carpetbagger UT,CA,MA,NH,Mexico) lost Iowa, South Carolina, Florida and California.
The only primaries he won were in Michigan, where Dad was governor; LDS states;
and a few states on Super Tuesday in which his California-obsessed rivals
couldn't spare the cash to advertise.
Only John Connolly in 1968 had a worse cash-to-delegates ratio.
And John McCain rightly did not like Romney's tactics during the primaries.
(W)hen (Romney's early leads) started slipping away, he resorted to unfair,
distorted, scorched-earth negative ads, betting that his opponents couldn't
afford to spend enough for the truth to catch up to his charges."

Where was Mitt when it took him, when as Governor he was the highest law enforcement executive, he hired and then knowingly illegal gardeners for a year? ( Granted there was a Mormon connection. )
Yeah. Mitt, Mr. Clear, sort of, in a wishy washy way, but not too hard on anybody, Conservative.
Although, he was Mr. Hardlines with a Iraq War infantry vetran that wanted a pardon for being a 13 year old with a BB gun and it was keeping the veteran( something NO Romney male( snicker ) can ever say) from being a cop.

Late in October, The American Spectator's The Prowler revealed:
"Former Mitt Romney presidential campaign staffers, some of whom are currently working for Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin's bid for the White House,
have been involved in spreading anti-Palin spin to reporters, seeking to diminish her standing after the election.
'Sarah Palin is a lightweight, she won't be the first, not even the third, person people will think of when it comes to 2012,'
says one former Romney aide, now working for McCain-Palin.
'The only serious candidate ready to challenge to lead the Republican Party is Mitt Romney.
He's in charge on November 5th.'"
The Prowler added: "Some former Romney aides were behind the recent leaks to media, including CNN, that Governor Sarah Palin was a 'diva' and was going off message intentionally."
The Romney supporters in the McCain campaign had access to internal polling which indicated well in advance of the November 4 election that McCain had no chance to win.
So they began working to position their man Mitt for a run in 2012. Just two days after the election,The Palmetto Scoop reported:
"One of the first stories to hit the national airwaves was the claim of a major internal strife between close McCain aides and the folks handling his running mate Sarah Palin."
"Im told by very good sources that this was indeed the case and that a rift had developed, but it was between Palins people and the staffers brought on from the failed presidential campaign of former Gov. Mitt Romney, not McCain aides."
"The sources said nearly 80 percent of Romneys former staff was absorbed by McCain and these individuals were responsible for what amounts to a premeditated, last-minute sabotage of Palin."
These aides loyal to Romney inside the McCain campaign, said The Scoop, reportedly saw that Palin would be a serious contender for the Republican nomination in 2012 or 2016, which made her a threat to another presidential quest by Romney.
Erick Erickson, who organized Operation Leper, said:
"Heres what I think: I think there are some staffers on the McCain campaign who seriously screwed up the roll out of Sarah Palin, to which Governor Palin herself objected.
These staffers are now out trying to finish her off thinking, as typical D.C. types do, that if they dont do it to her, shell do it to them. They just never understood who Palin is or what she is about."
"Likewise, I do think there are some staffers and others who expect Mitt Romney to run again in 2012,
they decided McCain could not win, and decided to undermine Sarah Palin and her chances hoping it would ingratiate themselves with Mitt Romney."
