The two Republicans who didnt vote: Jeff Flake (AZ) and John Sullivan (OK).
Heres why: Flake had a family conflict (his daughter is reportedly in a beauty pageant in Alabama tomorrow) and Sullivan is undergoing alcohol treatment. FYI - Dem. Rep. Patrick Kennedy was pulled out of rehab to cast his vote.
Saw this on Malkin’s website. I don’t fault either of them. It was the eight knucklehead rinos that are at fault. I simply don’t understand why they shoot themselves in the foot, especially when rats are going with the rest of the republicans. Jeez.
You don’t fault them? Really? Probably the biggest vote of their careers?
Oh Hildy really? You are an awesome FREEPER, but you are exaggerating big time. I can name the TARP money fiasco as even worse that this vote. And there are many others that have been passed over the years.
They need to hear the riot act from their constituentns, but good!
I agree. They have a job to do. So do it.
Well..it was a big vote, in this political climate they had to know we’d all be watching. I do tend to exaggerate..it’s part of my charm! :P
So the margin would have been closer by two votes, and still would have passed. Unless they could somehow convinced the 8 to stay the course.
Even with their two votes we still would have lost.
Damn ‘our side’(I’m not a member of either party) just dropped the ball on this big time. If nothing else, the republicans that voted FOR this garbage provided political cover so several of those dems that voted against it could do so while the legislation still passed. If those republicans would have voted against it, an equal amount of dems would have been forced to vote for it, causing them trouble back home. Also, if the vote count would have been looking like that before the actual vote, it would have given those dems more bargaining power, and could have caused the legislation to be more watered down to meet their liking.
Those so called republicans really betrayed the entire country today. What boggles the mind is how could these republicans hold firm and oppose the porkulus bill, and support THIS?? This bill is FAR worse for our country than porkulus was. ....It’s irrational!
that’s not the point...I want my congresspeople to show up. THey beg for our votes, and then do whatever they please and I for one am sick of it.
Hildy I just don’t understand this bill and I suspect that most Americans are clueless to it. Is it the businesses that are going to pay these taxes? Is this about cabon credits or something like that. I guarantee you that only 15 percent of Americans (if that high) even know what the heck it is or even that it was voted on today.
Don’t fall for that! Even IF TRUE........is that your attitude on voting day?
“Oh well, what’s one vote going to count?”
/rant
I’ve heard several commentators say today that it won’t pass the Senate...so maybe that explains it?
Wish my so called representative hadn’t voted.

I agree with you 100%.
We’re having a tea party tomorrow in my small town. Almost 200 people showed up in April, and this is the follow up...I’m hoping for a lot of people and a lot of anger...we need to get angry. And then we need to get busy.
Behind the scenes horse trading and wheeling and dealing. These abstentions were part and parcel of managing the appearance of a close vote, while providing cover for the vulnerable.
Smoke and mirrors, in other words. The chummy little club protects it’s own, but will get it’s predetermined outcome eventually.
Watch the earmarks down the road for further indication of this dealmaking. Yes votes and abstentions will be compensated for risking voter wrath, unlikely as that might be in IL or NJ.
Lets see, I think Mike Castle is running for Biden’s old seat and Mark Kirk is running for Burris’s senate seat. The other thing in Illinois is everyone and their brother is getting into the governors race and Kirk is the only candidate I’ve heard mentioned for Senate.
explains what? Why would ANY Republican vote for this? I want to hear explanations. I want to hear why Mary Bono thinks this is a good thing..and if she does, she should change parties.
The time is comming ever closer. We are witnessing the destruction of our great republic. We can either sit on the bench and watch in horror, or we can rise up and stop it.
Keep your powder dry ladies and gents, we may need it very soon.
Sorry, but this was a lot more important than Flake’s daughters beauty contest... if she has no country it won’t matter if she won or lost today or her father was there or not... he is being paid to show up and place these important votes.
...explains why two no-shows were no-shows. I can’t explain those who were there and voted yes.
No kidding! If they can’t make the commitment when it is this important then they shouldn’t be in office.
I don’t get it, has Palm Springs gone that liberal??? or did people assume because she married Bono she was also a conservative?
oh honey! Palm Springs is gay now - another Key West even, only hotter, and no ocean, and...

Right the vote was 219 to 212 so those two votes would not have changed it. The other 8 though got the Dims over the top.
One man, one vote insures takers run the elections.
We prospered when we were a republic.
So that’s it? It’s done, nothing we can do about it?
I’m pretty pissed right now. I’ve spent my entire life playing by the rules, busting my ass, doing it “the right way”, and just when I think I’ve made it, finnaly achieved the American Dream, these traitors in Congress and the Administration are about to take it away.
The time for talk is over, as I see it we have two options left. I will let you figure out what they are, because mentioning one of them could get me in trouble.
Were they "paired" against? I.e., did they take leave, but after assuring that two Dems would also be absent who would otherwise attend, who favored the measure?
Of course, for that to work, they had to be willing to show up if they couldn't pair or the Dems wouldn't agree to pair.
yours did

I don't agree with that particular conspiracy theory

*shakes head sadly*
Congressman John Sullivan is from Oklahoma. He is currently in treatment at the Betty Ford Clinic. Although, sadly, this means he has missed todays vote, happily, it means he is taking his problem seriously and will be personally stronger and better able to serve the people of Oklahoma and the United States when he is finished. We here in Oklahoma wish him much luck with his recovery and pray the Lord continue to grant him strength to continue on one day at a time.
Incredible...
Yea, he had to prep her to answer that she supported gay
marriage.I didn’t vote last November, because I was cleaning out my sock drawer.
I cannot find the lone Republican from Maryland on the list of voters either. Very disappointing! He is elderly, hope he is not ill. There are already windmill farms in his district (western Maryland) so it is possible that he faced an ethical dilemma. I want to know why Maryland didn’t get its only NO vote?????
I'm sure that Pelosi and Hoyer carefully counted the votes and "allowed" the dems in the most conservative districts to vote No because it will help their reelection campaigns in '10. If only one or two Republicans had voted no, then just a few more 'blue dog' Dems would have been instructed to vote Yes.
Only a true democrat revolt against their party leaders could have doomed this debacle.
Roscoe Bartlett voted no.
Well I fault them, especially Mr. Sullivan who is my representative. I was not represented in that important vote. If one cannot serve for whatever reason, that person should be replaced, even temporarily if need be.
That's why our country is in the mess it's in!
Thanks, I confused my congressmen’s names.
Insert any date since 1788 and your post is just as valid.
Oh, no. So now the difference between Democrats and Republicans is that the Democrats pull their people out of rehab for an important vote and the Republicans don’t? We are doomed.
Part of recovery is taking responsibility. He had a responsibility to show up and he could have.
Yes of course the dems want 218 and to allow certain Dims vote no. On the other hand the GOP “yeses” may well be against this bill but feel they need to vote yes to keep their seat and depending on the Senate to kill this depression creator of a bill.
As for the guys in rehab, you go to rehab, you resign plain and simple, allow the people representation.
How would they know, if they are not at a computer every day... the media is too busy talking about Michael Jackson to report what will affect every American’s way of life in an objective manner.
