"House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) slowed Democrats’ attempt to pass a sweeping climate-change legislation Friday evening, reading page-by-page through a 300-page Democratic amendment before allowing a roll call vote."
"Boehner, whose move threatened to postpone a vote well into the evening – on a day that has already seen hours of contentious debate.
House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), one of the bill’s sponsors, interrupted Boehner’s filibuster with a parliamentary inquiry as to whether there was any limit to how long the Ohio Republican could speak – and suggested that he was hoping to talk so long that member might leave before the vote.
“It’s the custom of the House to hear the leader’s remarks,” replied Tauscher, who looking apologetic as Republicans applauded.
“Reclaiming my time,” Boehner said, “the gentleman’s had his 30 years to put this bill together. And the House is going to spend a whopping five hours debating the most profound piece of legislation to come to this floor in 100 years. And the chairman has the audacity to drop a 300-plus page amendment in the hopper at 3:09 a.m. this morning. And so I would ask my colleagues, don’t you think the American people expect us to understand what’s in this bill before we vote on it?”
“And so to get to page 34,” he continued.
Rep. Geoff Davis, a Republican from Kentucky, said earlier in the day that the cap-and-trade bill represented the “economic colonization of the heartland” by New York and California. Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) called the bill a “scam” that would do nothing but satisfy “the twisted desires of radical environmentalists.” Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wisc.) called it a “massive transfer of wealth” from the United States to foreign countries."

...aaaaaaaaaand my estimation of Rep. Boehner ticks up one point.
< ding! >
I caught part of Boehner’s speech after returning home. He finished with applause. Waxman started whining about how long Boehner was speaking.
Waxman — anything that slimey rat is involved with, is liberal garbage. This gutter-crawler has infested our state for far too long. I have listened to him, and God help me, actually watched this fraud in action for far too many years.
God, where are the term limits???
I have Nancy on mute and can’t even stand to watch.
Now Pelosi is thanking everyone. She had a minute; now she is yielding over while saying this POS bill will provide jobs; which of course they won’t and will most likely take the jobs of the House right along with them.
I hate to tell this guys; but they know as well as we do; we already have energy independence with all our natural resources.
LOL, they recalled the drug-addled Patrick Kennedy from rehab, just to pass this insult to the American people. GOD PLEASE LET THIS GO DOWN IN FLAMES!
I hear ya. How anyone can respect pelosi is beyond me not to mention vote for her.
And he was booed appropriately.
Krauthammer just called the bill “an abomination.” Much more diplomatic than I am...
There's nothing about this man that isn't small except his ego and lust for power.
“Now Pelosi is thanking everyone. She had a minute; now she is yielding over while saying this POS bill will provide jobs”
Notice she didn’t say which country those jobs would be created in.
Too bad he could not do a "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" kind of thing. Anyone that would do that would instantly become famous.
One thing Boehner made clear. If you want to sell your home, it will cost you a fortune to bring the home up to the Feds standards. Welcome to dictatorship.
BTTT
They need to read the entire bill on the floor, that would be a real filibuster.
Maybe Madam speaker took Rats on the fence aside and offered to show them some leg.
There are no filibusters in the House.
Exactly. The truth is right in front of their booger-filled noses. All we have to do is drill here, build nuke plants and tell the envirowackos to take a hike and we wouldn't have any energy problems.
It is stupid for any nation to just sit on their energy reserves, like they need to be saved for a rainy day or something.
Ummm..., I don’t think that is a filibuster. I think that is simply a reading of the bill, even though it does take time. A filibuster would be talking as long as you could keep doing it (physically speaking...).
So, someone tell me if this is a *real filibuster* or not...
I know what you mean. I moved out of California in 1984, and he had already long since worn out his welcome with me.
Hard to believe he's still getting elected.
“Climate change vote” my ass. It isn’t about “climate change”. This is about MONEY. Big money going to Algore and his elitist enviroloonies. Our wallets are going to be a lot lighter after this.
If the Houses passes it the Senate never will.
Change the channel Man!!! Your abusing yourself!
But Boehner wasn't trying to STALL the vote. He was reading and explaining parts of the 300 page amendment that coincidentally they all received just after 3 AM this morning.
So I don't see it as a Filibuster at all.
sw
He’s reading the text of the bill before voting, which apparently is allowed under House rules. 300 pages. You’re right, that’s a delay not a filibuster.
where are the term limits???
They are every two years for Congressmen I don’t see a problem.
For Senators, that is another story altogether. If they want to be legislators instead of what they used to be, then lets change their length of term to two years as well.
Then there is the California voting public to throw into the mix. What good would term limits do for such misguided voters?
The founders had it right, we choose to bastardize all their good work in the name of...
Why take the risk, you’ve got Snowe, Collins, Voinovich, et.al, in the Senate....
Waxman had a fit but there was nothing he could do.
Priceless.
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking... I guess some reporters aren’t that accurate in the use of their words... :-)
My meaning was that the bill is insanely long, it could take a very, very long time to read that thing. They ought to also check out The Hartland Institutes’s website for more documentation, and talking points.
It’s not a filibuster, that’s a Senate tactic.
It is stupid for any nation to just sit on their energy reserves, like they need to be saved for a rainy day or something.
FRiend, it is far far, worse than stupid, it is treasonous to the point, that I must now self censor the remaining comments.
I just called my Democrat Senatoresses {Patty and Maria] to bring pressure on our Congressmen to vote NO on Cap and Trade.
I told them its a huge tax on and already weakened economy and will only increase the economic down spiral.
I'm counting on them not wanting to see the bill come to the Senate and have to look "un-green" in front of their constituants come election time.
Don't know if it will work - but it's worth a try!!!
Hope you’re right.
Did Boehner find his giblets? I thought they were gone forever.
Technicalities, they can delay it a good long time though. If they have the time they might be able to sway some votes among the blue-dogs.
Forbes offering substitute amendment to the 300 page defeated. Ten Republicans defecting.
Is Guam excluded from the bill?
That is where she has her family sweat shops.
Technicalities?
LOL
It’s not a filibuster.
God bless him, because balls win battles.
An interested, involved voting public is/was the only hope. Our present day culture, having been indoctrinated by decades of leftist media and public education, is not going to prevent that which is occurring...neither can those of us in the conservative minority.
Keep your powder dry.
And just what several others have told me... :-)
Those stupid reporters using that word... LOL...
Keep pouring on the fire, boys!
The question of the hour is - will the delay just give Pelosi more time to bribe Dem representatives to vote for it?
