Police in Los Angeles were preparing to interview a doctor to establish whether Michael Jackson was injected with a strong painkilling drug shortly before he suffered a fatal heart attack.
Detectives confirmed their intention to question the singer's personal physician, amid reports that Jackson was already dead by the time paramedics arrived on the scene on Thursday.
Reports in the US suggested Jackson had stopped breathing after taking an injection of the prescription drug Demerol, a commercial name for pethidine, which can cause cardiac arrest if too large a dose is given.

The Jackson family's lawyer said he believed "overmedication" was to blame for the pop legend's death at the age of 50, adding that he was prepared to "name names" of those who allegedly "enabled" his drug use if a post mortem examination showed that drugs had brought on the heart attack.
Police are treating Jackson's home as a potential crime scene, sealing off the room in which he collapsed. A police spokesman said prescription drugs had been found inside the house.
A BMW car belonging to the doctor was one of two vehicles towed away from Jackson's rented house.
A spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery and Homicide Unit, which is conducting the investigation, said: "The car belonged to Mr Jackson's personal physician.
"It was impounded as police have been unable to interview him and the car could contain medication or other evidence for the coroner."
The police spokesman would not confirm the name of the doctor being sought for questioning, but reports last night suggested he had made contact with detectives.

I hope this guy has a good lawyer.
He will need one.
Well, yeah... but it stands to reason that any meds still in the car are *not* in Michael Jackson. Seems it's the stuff in MJ that matters most.
The family is going to be looking for scapegoats, instead of looking at Michael Jackson himself....

... or themselves!

I was told it takes weeks for a toxicology report to show what was in his system...something about having to grow material taken from the corpse in a petri dish, experts please add.
I think most “normal” tox tests don’t take so long, some of the simpler ones are probably pretty fast. But this being such a high profile case they’re having to run pretty much every test in the book, and they won’t release any analysis until everything is there to review.
My guess.
What would they do to a King killer behind bars? Oh, my...
A young man with talent ,fawned over,"protected",his whims catered to, and ultimately used by his entourage to sustain their lifestyles.
Well, just read that the doctors’ car got impounded...leads me to believe that the doc was whisked away under cover. Either this was an accidental overdose or an agreed assisted suicide. Place your bets folks.
I dunno. If the good doctor snuffed the King, that's murder. They didn't find the good doctor after he pumped the King's chest - which was heard on the 911 call. That's called leaving the scene of a crime.
The good doctor better PRAY that they have a solitary section wherever they send him.
As an aside,my sports medicine type doctor would have turned me into a junkie IF I had followed his prescription of 4 to 8 oxycontin daily over twelve weeks for the pain of broken bone.I think the entertainers get hooked on the un-natural feelin'-so-good that enables them to keep performing when normal people would drop from exhaustion. And not incidentally, keep the money rolling in for the producers, record companies, and hangers-on!
Is pethidine the UK name for Demerol & is Meperidine the US name for it?
That could be - I think I once went to go look up acetamol or some such only to find out it was what the brits call acetominophen!
O-o-o-o-o-o-----that'll smart.
Just ax Jeffrey Dahmer...
Bad joke, L.
