A Nestle plant linked to an outbreak of illness has been shut temporarily, and the company said Monday that it expects to lay off more than 200 workers as a result. Preliminary results "indicate a strong association with eating raw prepackaged cookie dough," the CDC says.
"It's likely that we're going to have some temporary layoffs at that facility," Nestle spokeswoman Roz O'Hearn said of the Danville, Virginia, facility that was churning out refrigerated cookie-dough products until Thursday.
About 550 people work at the factory, but only about half of them work on cookie dough, she said. The rest work on Buitoni pasta and sauce in a separate facility at the plant.
She said there is little chance that the Buitoni products might be tainted, because -- even if the cookie dough is proved to be the source of the outbreak of E. coli 0157:H7 -- it is a kosher product, meaning it is made from a segregated stream of ingredients.

I’m never going to get used to this “hope and change” crap.
It’s easy - what BO meant - get me elected and you will be hoping for some change.
Glenn Beck ate the raw dough on his TV show and he didn’t get sick.
But they won't.
An outbreak of illness?
Hope I never get illness.
Who wants cookies!
Who are these stupid people who eat raw cookie dough????? (guilty)
They’ll start making the stuff in China instead...
Nestle employees?
That's probably where they import their ingredients from.
My GF hammers me everytime she sees me eating anything with raw eggs in it. Makes licking the batter spoon a secretive process.
There are a few guilty people in my house too....
I don’t know if there are eggs in the Nestle dough, but eating homemade dough gives you a very slight chance of getting salmonella. I just saw a website that says 1 in 30,000.
But all it takes is that one. I still eat the stuff.
This reminds me of our 2nd daughter’s adventure in eating raw sugar cookie dough one Christmas. We made sugar cookies one afternoon, and daughter snuck a chunk of dough into a ziploc bag to save for later. She hid it under her bed. And ate some the next day. We had had chili for supper the night before. Yeah. Mmmmmm. She was in the first grade and will never forget what happened in school the next day. And I bet her teacher has never forgotten it either. LOL It hasn’t stopped her from sampling cookie dough, however. Or cake batter.
Until that one. It happened to me 9 years ago ... worse than labor ... I passed out from the pain (and I have 4 kids). It was the worst 3 days in my life. Even water made me throw up. I collapsed on the bathroom floor. I've only wished Salmonella on a few people ... so far that hasn't worked.
All because of morons who can’t read the wrapper.
Is it going to be illegal to sell raw eggs or meat soon?
So ya don't want to lick the bowl any more eh?
That is one of the grossest and yet funniest movie scenes I’ve ever seen. :-)
So ya don't want to lick the bowl any more eh?
I don't know ... I haven't actually met you. Probably not, because you're on FR ... but we do have some "characters" here too. Just don't ... just to be safe.
Oh, my...I never eat raw cookie dough. But it doesn’t just have to do with the eggs.
Mice and rats love to forage on wheat. They pee on wheat, poop on wheat, all while scurrying about eating the stuff. Grainaries do a good job of keeping rats and mice under control but sometime the feces end up being milled with the wheat. Be sure and cook wheat products thoroughly, you know, cook the sh!t out of it.
And you thought it was only the eggs!
Scary that you even tried!
We do. All the time. Always have.
A life spent obsessing about microscopic traces of icky things in food is a life wasted. The most life affirming and delicious food in the world is a taco from a Mexican street vendor with questionable sanitation practices.
Here's an article illustrating the "ethics" of Nestle:
Nestle sues company that came up a product 15 years before Nestle patented it
Today's story of patent insanity comes to us courtesy of Wysong, a small natural pet foods company that came up with a method to put probiotics in foods in the early 80s. The company used the technique to sell pet food biscuits that supposedly have certain health benefits. As its products became more popular, the company saw copycats come into the market, but figured it helped everyone (including the pets), and there was nothing wrong with that. Then... fifteen years later, Nestle, the owner of Purina, happened to patent the very same process and, a few years later, sued Wysong, demanding royalties all the way back to when it got its patent.
yikes! LOL
(ICE probably should pay a visit to this plant. They won't however. If an illegal is to blame for this, he's part of Obamadinejad's hopeychangey constituency.)
Yeah, my wife gives me a hard time every time he sees me licking the bowl!
[Yeah, my wife gives me a hard time every time he sees me licking the bowl!]
Ummm...did you drop a letter there?? lol
This is what I was responding to-"My GF hammers me everytime she sees me eating anything with raw eggs in it. "
I realize what you were responding to but your wife is a he??
It says right on the package, Do Not eat raw dough. So what gives? There should be no recall. If a lawn mower says, Do Not put foot under mower deck and someone does and gets whacked, do they recall all the mowers or mower blades? You can’t protect against stupidity but the government does it’s best to act stupid.
Been there, done that.
Didn't get sick.
If the problem were the eggs, I think it would be salmonella. This is e coli. Poo germs got into there from somewhere.
My son eats raw cookie dough a lot. I felt better that it was packaged dough and not homemade. Jokes on me!
One bout of salmonella will break you of that habit. Trust me.
I thought that strain of E. Coli was found in cattle, not eggs.
I could be wrong.
But I started to wonder if there was deliberate tampering.
Hope I never get illness.
Outbreak of illness is caused by happy fun ball.
Do not taunt happy fun ball.
Glenn Beck ate Pillsbury cookie dough not Nestle........
La Cabrito Burrito.. :)
We buy frozen cookie dough from GFS. Comes in a package of 120 preformed cookies. Not a one will ever see the oven, my son eats every one of them right out of the freezer.
It used to be that Mom always baked cookies for Dad & the Kids.
Now, Mom has no clue, can't even boil water and nobody would get a decent meal or treat if it weren't for frozen deli, packaged meals or McDonalds.
Packaged is probably still better than homemade.... decades of people eating raw nestle cookie dough... first little outbreak...
I’ll go with the odds of commercial raw cookie dough. :D
My grandkids love the stuff! They get cookie dough tornados all the time. And, they eat the pre packaged stuff I buy to bake. And yes, they played in the dirt, and are always into something, so their immune systems are pretty good. I won't mention some of the stuff I ate as a kid, and I seldom got sick.
I am almost afraid to ask. What is a cookie dough tornado?
Reminds me of Fred Sanford’s “I’ll get some dough and push your face in it and make gorilla cookies...”
Actually, no- Just as I seriously doubt that Rebelbase's GF is A she.
They are the equivalent of Dairy Queen's Blizzards but are made at Dairy King. There are little balls of cookie dough in the ice cream, and whatever else they put in them.
