Trees to be planted for each green flag at Cup races
The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing announced "NASCAR Green Clean Air" -- a program to help capture the carbon emissions produced by racing. Under a pilot program that will expand significantly next year, NASCAR will plant 10 new trees for each green flag that drops during Cup Series events.
The tracks participating in the tree-planting program -- 11 this year and every venue visited by the Cup Series in 2010 -- will mitigate 100 percent of the carbon emissions produced by the race cars competing in their Cup Series events.
"This is a first, important step in an ambitious five-year plan to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of NASCAR, while raising awareness of conservation among fans," NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France said. "Our goal is to be an environmental leader not only in sports but in all industry."
Over time, rolled out across all three national series, NASCAR and its partners will be planting approximately 20 acres of new trees each year. Michigan International Speedway, which is at the forefront of green initiatives, is matching the carbon-capturing planting effort at its track. A tree stores approximately one ton of CO2 over its lifetime, which means that the entire CO2 emissions from a typical race will be offset during this time.

How about NASCAR, the “stock car” series, actually race *stock* cars instead of doing the idiot green thing?
Not really a bad idea from a PR standpoint. I’ve long wished there were some trees around MIS instead of a couple of square miles of Michigan desert. Putting them in the infield would be completely stupid.
I was trying to post a clever comment, but I am speechless.
I am afraid to ask what’s next.
ANOTHER reason to NOT spend MY money at a NASCAR event.
The smell of burnt rubber is actually burnt toast.
For a minte there I thought they meant they’d plant the trees alongside the track. I figured one out of control car can wipe out a half dozen or so trees all at once, depending on their size/age.
DITTO that - I hate the ‘car of today’ cars.
Might as well plant those trees in the infield.
Make sure they are made with ‘soft-walled-bark’ just in case someone crashes into one.
There are trees right up against the track at Pocono and I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a car end up in them. I don’t even think there’s a catch fence back there, which might explain the critters on the track.
“...I thought they meant theyd plant the trees alongside the track.”
Well if they are really committed to this nonsense, they ought to plant them on the edge of the track, right in front of the grandstand.

Unnngh.. gakkk. where’s my chainsaw?
This is GREAT news!!! It’s one more obstacle that the drivers have to avoid in a wreck so they aren’t killed!!
I can’t wait until I can sleep through NASCAR races when all they have on the track are hybrids!! Should be about as exciting as watching grass grow!!
(I hate political correctness!)
You can capture more carbon in soil with grasses and cows than with trees.
I know....!!! I figured since it’s Monday anyway, might as well face the bad news. This is very sad and disappointing. Somebody messed with the Gatorade at NASCAR HQ ... or something....:(
But will the trees be COT resistant?
Welcome to the Gore Continuum, resistance is futile, you will be assimilated.
What's next those little bug shaped solar cars quietly swooshing around Talladega and Charlotte? When will our side learn that you can't appease these people? This will not make the enviro-left like NASCAR it will just embolden them to demand more.

You have my vote on that, If I cant buy it at the dealer they shouldnt be racing it. Thats what Stock means.
In an effort to get more Blacks into NASCAR these tree’s will be planted by Black personnel.
How long before a driver hits a tree during a NASCAR race and is killed as a result?
They are trying to stop Obama from taxing them out of existence, however this will only stop 0 from coming after them for only a few weeks.
Obama and the FedGOV is forcing NASCAR to do this, and is going to raise their taxes too.
Some years back, NASCAR paid out an unspecified amount of money to Jesse Jackson for “protection” from being targeted by Jackson’s group for not being black enough by Jackson’s standards. Now, it seems, they must have been visited by the Dimrat’s enviro-wackos. Wonder how much was paid under the table here?
What we should have heard from the commisionner of NASCAR:
"Just think race fans, in 20 years we'll have PLENTY of wood for the infield BBQ's and campgrounds just outside the tracks!!"
Please plant the trees in the track so it becomes an obstacle course that should make the race more exciting!!
This will do nothing to stop the eventual destruction of Nascar. It is the money that Nascar brings in and the loyal fans that Nascar has (or once did anyway) that the liberals/socialists/statists/commies want for themselves or if they cant have them, then simply to take it away from THEM (whoever THEM may be).
F*ck Nascar for going along with this charade, the France family deserves what it’s about to get.
What a joke. Nice PR try. What about the millions of cars that drive to the races? And all the CO2 caused by people watching on TV?
Coming next: speed bumps. I hate those things!!
As Brendan Behan famously said, “The world is in a state of chassis.”
I'm afraid to ask also; that's why I didn't. NASCAR, a la the France family, is apparently doomed, but there are still the older regional tracks and races... so folks need to enjoy those while they last.
I guess I’m not keeping up. I thought “cap and trade” was not a done deal yet; but this move makes it seem so.
Yes make them large enough to strip the ground effects off the cars and watch the next lap excitement!
LOL. My first (and possibly only) laff of the day.
