A recent computer intrusion that forced the FBI to shut down its computer network and disrupted FBI operations was traced to an e-mail containing malicious code that originated in China, according to FBI officials.
The forced shutdown of the network affected one significant FBI operation -- the May 20 arrest of homegrown terrorism suspects in New York, said officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.
"The Chinese shut down our network," said one FBI official familiar with assessments of the attack.

No wonder Obama became president.

We keep hearing stories about the Chinese hacking us are we hacking them?
You raise a very significant question.
Hacking is only effective against an enemy that is Internet / computer-interconnect dependent, like the US.
It would be useless against, say, Uganda.
China certainly uses lots of computers, but how interconnect dependent are they?
I bet you could find a back door at any Wal mart

OOPS
Hackers be hackers. Trust me all their computers are interconnected. State control guarantees this. Is our government doing their best to infiltrate Chinese computers? Not something we hear about. As a hacker from years past I would hope we are into their systems big time.
Supposedly China is using IPv6 while we still rely on IPv4. This makes it a bit more difficult to trace back from the IPv4 side.
NO Cheers,unfortunately.
And our government monitors dont know about Ipv6 heck, I play with this technology on a daily basis.
Always a dumb@ss that will click an attachment just because the text says to click it.
‘And our government monitors dont know about Ipv6”
They know about it but they don’t have it.
It has to do with the address translation from IPv4 to IPv6. Its easier to trace IPs from v6 to a v4 network. Going v4 to v6 is more difficult.
When the hell are we going to hack them back?
"The FBI network disruptions followed a similar penetration of the Defense Department e-mail system used by Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates in 2007, which defense officials have said was traced to computer servers in China."
chicom bump...
inb4 honeypot lulz
It would appear so, but we stopped "after several warnings by [Chinese] government officials".

From the FBI Article:
According to the officials, the computer network penetration occurred in early May after an FBI employee opened an attachment to an e-mail marked H1N1 in the subject line. The H1N1 virus is also known as the swine flu. It then permitted hackers some access to the FBI network that was not discovered until at least a week after the e-mail electronic infection.
H1N1 spam is in bad taste but not unexpected

Media reports that spammers are using swine flu as a method to spread malware has been described as below the belt.’
A number of spammers and phishers have already identified it as a new way to lure victims and Rick Howard, director of intelligence at iDefense claimed that it was in bad taste, but businesses should prepare for attacks via PDF files.
Howard said: It’s pretty far below the belt, but iDefense has identified a number of cybercriminals picking up on the growing panic over swine flu to create new ways to implement their scams.
Over the next few months we expect to see growing numbers of malicious code attacks distributed via PDF files on the emotive subject of swine flu.
Now, now, is that any way to talk about your owners/masters/creditors?
A little more respect, please, for the people who own your house, your car, your wife, your children, your grandchildren, your great-grandchildren....
Now bow, like the good little serf you’ve been turned into by your “leaders”, and beg for more.
Ok I’ll bite what the heck is IPv6 or 4 and if you tell me are you going to have to shoot me.
Never mind I just found the answer to my previous.
