Who Killed Health Care (This Time)? (State-run media author really pissed at Hussein)

Who Killed Health Care (This Time)?
Upset of the year
By ROBERT A. GEORGE
Updated 8:16 PM EDT, Sat, Jun 20, 2009

Can this be happening before our very eyes?

Can it truly be possible that despite the most popular Democrat in the White House in 45 years and commanding Democratic majorities in both the House and Senate (the latter nearly filibuster-proof), that the quest for the Holy Grail of politics -- a national health-care insurance program -- is likely to fail yet again?

For the Nth time since Harry Truman first suggested the idea in 1945?

That seems to be the building consensus -- even from Democrats, with phrases like "on the rocks" being uttered.

Barely five months into the Obama administration, how could this be the case? And how could the attempt fall apart in accelerated fashion -- much faster than the much-maligned, abortive Clinton effort of 1993 and '94?

Well, cost is certainly one problem: The Congressional Budget Office estimate of the preferred Ted Kennedy-authored bill -- $1.3 trillion -- over ten years terrified a lot of folks, especially given that it would reportedly only reach one-third of the uninsured population that were the main targets of the legislation. When that figure was added to the multitude of polls reflecting growing anxiety over the deficit and debt, it's not surprising that Congress is balking.

However, columnist Jim Pinkerton also identifies another culprit: Health-care reform -- because of Obama decisions on the economy -- has crashed into the political reality following Wall Street meltdown.

When confronted with a choice between healthcare for the poor and the near-poor on the one hand, and the continued overstuffing of the overclass on the other hand, Obama made a decisive choice: He chose the overclass. He put rich people first.

The majority of our fellow countrymen want government-run healthcare.

The faster you drive a piece of junk, the faster it falls apart.

Let’s not get over confident. This battle is not over by any means. It’s good to hear that there is opposition developing among some Democrats in Congress. But this isn’t over yet.

I heard something about the “reconciliation” of the budget which would somehow bypass a Senate filibuster, and require exactly 51 Senate votes, instead of 60 to break a filibuster. Anybody know if that’s true, because if so, we’re in trouble with trying to stop this. Somehow healthcare “reform” would be tied in with the budget and just be enacted that way. I hope it’s not true because then we really have our work cut out for us to block this.

FWIW, I think BJ Klintoon was probably more popular than Zero at this point in 1993 and when he leaves office in 2013 Zero will probably be more unpopular than Hoover.

Say what? I think Clinton might be able to dispute that statement.

While many have criticized Mr. Obama's proposal for a public option, Americans generally see government involvement in health care in a positive light, and most support it.

Fifty percent think the government would be better than insurance companies at providing medical coverage (up from 30 percent in 2007), and 59 percent think the government would be at better holding down costs (up from 47 percent in 2007).

I don't happen to know anyone in favor of obama health care. Show me one thing gov does well, one thing good that is.

Oh, I have no doubt at all that they'll be better at holding down costs.

No doubt the masses endorse the abstract concept of what they imagine will be free health care. But the real problem here is never mentioned by the media: There just isn't much concern about health insurance in this country--there is no "crisis" in the eyes of the great majority.

When people are asked to produce a list of their concerns, rather than checking off options presented on a premade list, "health insurance" barely registers.

These schemes fail because the thugs in charge fail to demonstrate any need for the increase in taxes and loss of free choice that the average person can relate to.

That is quite true. A lot of bankers and the politicians who enabled them should be hanging from lampposts (figuratively), but they skated.

Mr. George is doped up. Hussein ain't that popular. And to say he is the most popular Democrat is kinda like saying he is the most intelligent flatworm.

Nationalized health care isn't dead yet.

I say kill it, drive a stake through its heart, burn the corpse, and scatter the ashes at sea.

I don’t think Obummer’s health care as is was going anywhere right from the start. Too many conservatives as well as conservative and even moderate democrats are against this monster especially those democrats who have won in conservative districts and may fear losing their next elections. This was tried before. It was called Hillarycare. The administration tried to put lipstick on this pig but it was still a pig, to use Obummer’s own words. This kind of monster health care proposal is like pissing in the wind. You’re gonna get a helluva blowback and you won’t like it one but. The WH is trying to do damage control now but they are clearly losing and in a panic over this as well they should be. It’s a big loser for the WH.

The problem with Socialized Medicine from the Democrat Party’s perspective is that it just isn’t that popular with the people. Not only that, implementation would require a hefty tax increase- which is even less popular.

It was an easy vote last year- everyone knew that President Bush would veto it if it came to his desk. Today, its a different story, the current president is pledged to sign it.

Not every Democrat in Congress represents Berkeley or Marin County or the upper west side of NY. But they are all up for reelection not that far down the road.

Don't forget to watch every wave that washes ashore for a speck of those ashes trying to come back to haunt us. Socialism is worse than the Blob or Freddy Krueger - it can't be killed. You just have to stay alert through all the sequels if you want to survive.
