STOCKTON SPRINGS, Maine -- For nearly a decade, locals here have been fighting American Indians over the name of a dead-end dirt road.
The lane in question, on a woodsy bluff overlooking the ocean, was once called Squaw Point Road. Maine banned the word "squaw" from place names in 2000, in deference to Indians who consider it racist. Names such as Squaw's Bosom Mountain and Little Squaw Brook quietly receded into history.
But residents here played Scrabble with the spelling instead. They renamed the road Squawpoint -- then later, Squa Point and Squapoint, complying with the letter of the law but not with its spirit, critics say.
The resistance prompted the state into action again. This month, Maine lawmakers amended the law to ban public place names that include "the designation 'squa' or any derivation of 'squa' as a separate word or as a separate syllable in a word."

Then they'd never be "offended" again!!!!
People didn’t appreciate my similar suggestion when Miami University in Oxford, Ohio changed from the Redskins to the Redhawks. I said that the university’s name should be changed to Oxford University so that the Miami tribe would never be mentioned again and be forgotten by everyone except for a few obscure historians. The satire impaired got their boxers in a bunch about that.
We’d have to ban a certain Cher song...
My father married a pure cherokee
My mothers people were ashamed of me
The indians said I was white by law
The white man always called me indian squaw
(HALF BREED)
(From the wikipedia entry on Half-Breed: “The term is considered an impolite and rude offensive slur by many; however, not acknowledging multi-racial Native Americans is even more offensive.”)
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Squa
The urban dictionary definitions of ‘squa’ are funky.
I think they should just spell is backwords now:
Squaw
Wauqs
How about Longfellow SQUAre in Portland?
Roh ro!
Longfellow Erauqs?
Mrs NHD just suggested PC Lane. Then we could have PC Mountain, PC Lake, etc.
Name everything “Neuter”. Neuter Point, Neuter Lake, Neuter Mountain. In honor of neutering the English language.
“This way we don’t offend nobody.”
That makes me a native American. But living in Oklahoma I was raised around a lot of American Indians.
Geez, anybody ever try playing Cowboys and Native Americans?
What this country’s come to thanks to those liberal morons is truly disgusting. People have the right to be offended they do NOT have the right to demand that no one offend them.
Name everything Neuter. Neuter Point, Neuter Lake, Neuter Mountain. In honor of neutering the English language.
This way we dont offend nobody.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but that would probably offend the eunichs.
Down in Oklahoma many half breeds were too ashamed to register on the Indian rolls back about 100 years ago.
When the US government began to pass out Indian checks (MONEY) thousands came out of the woodwork even though they were not on the rolls. “Grandpa forgot to register! Where is my money!”
Today, there are large numbers of people in Oklahoma who look Anglo who are registered with the various tribes.
One woman I knew about 25 years ago was getting both Creek and Seminole checks.
Just go with Cowboys and Muslims.
The Mold Squad should be the Mod Squad.
“Squaw Lane” and “Squall Lane” are pronounced almost the same. Pity they didn’t think of it.
Our Boy Scouts, Buckeye Council, Ohio, are no longer permitted to gather squaw wood. They must now gather pipe stone wood.
As far as “native Americans” goes, that is a bunch of BS. They crossed the land bridge between Asia and the Americas. I wonder if they could be classified as illegal immigrants.
Hey Willie!!!
Personally, I wouldn’t give them squat..... :-)
Love that tagline.
Thanks! :-)
Maybe they should ban the component letters that contribute to the racist word. And bar any sounds that may, taken jointly or severally, comprise a noise that may be interpreted as racist. That way we could be silent and unread.
“Major dictionaries say the word “squaw” originally meant “woman” in some Indian languages. But over time, it came to be seen as disparaging, especially when used by white people. In a 1992 television appearance on “Oprah,” a prominent Indian activist popularized a contested theory that the word means “vagina.”
I had an interesting encounter with the PC Police at UHCL while a graduate student in 2000. I had submitted a short story to the university magazine that was set in the era of the 1930s. It was a “western” which automatically made it suspect bu the magazine editors, but they called me in about a character’s single use of the word “Squaw.” They wanted me to edit it ‘because the word means _unt.”
I asked them in which of several hundred AmerInd languages it had that meaning. Of course they had no answer. Just another Lib/Left myth. I slyly offered to use the “C” word instead but they didn’t like that either. I told them it was a matter of artistic freedom and truth to me because it was true to the era and the story line. If they didn’t want to use the story as written, then that was their privilege.
Ultimately they printed it without change. No one at the school complained. But the kicker is this: They won an award for the best university college magazine in Texas that year and the biggest point getter for their winning total was my story which was awarded the Best Short Story of 2000 in a Texas university/college magazine.
PC Morons!
How about just naming it the “ F-— Off woodsy bluff overlooking the ocean” lane?
If a squinty squire squeezes a squeamish squaw, will she squawk like a squirrel?
Rename it Blanket Ass Blvd ......
The town tho, about half native, voted to keep the original name.
I have a couple of friends who are just barely enough Choctaw to qualify for tribal membership. They are card carrying members and play it to the hilt, especially on job applications.
To my recollection, there is a town (village) named Squa Pan in northern Maine.
Indeed, a trip to Topo Zone reveals the following features in the state of Maine:
Squa Pan
Squa Pan Junction
Squa Pan Fire Tower
Squa Pan Inlet
Squa Pan Knob
Squa Pan Lake
Squa Pan Mountain
Squa Pan Stream
West Branch Squa Pan Inlet
As a matter of fact, Topo Zone turns up a total of sixty-six (66!) geographic names in the state which employ "squa" either alone or as a separate syllable.
Further, there are six separate meanings for the word "squa" in the Urban Dictionary . Only one of them refers to Native Americans.
Evidently, Maine lawmakers don't do any research...or aren't smart enough to do any research.
This kind of politically correct legislation should be laughed into the trash bin. Where it belongs...
I'm sure it's not the Indians doing this. It's Leftists.
The Leftists want all memory of the brave warriors forgotten and swept into the trash bin of history.
Id like to think Im a Native American. Im a Caucasian born in Lynn, MA, a part of the USA, thus, Native American.
****************************************************
You are definately Native American ... 100% ,, just as my white , blond haired friend in high school with the Germanic name from South Africa was a true African-American .. I will be Native American in the census and if I apply for any contract with a government agency.
How about telling the indians if they don't like it they can go back to asia where they came from?
Sasquatch was a Chicom yeti.
Bigfoot came over on the Mayflower with the Pilgrims.
