Man Wins $500k From A's for Mother's Day Snub
nbcphiladelphia ^ | 06/19/09 | Joe Kukura

Posted on 06/19/2009 3:36:43 PM PDT by DFG

The Oakland A's have reached a $510,000 settlement with a male attorney suing them because he wasn't given a commemorative cap being handed out to women at an A's game on Mother's Day 2004.

Attorney Alfred G. Rava initiated a class-action lawsuit against the A's because, as a biological male, he was not given a plaid sun hat being handed out to the first 7,500 ladies arriving at the Mother's Day game.

He sued over a commemorative Mother's Day cap? He could have at least held out for the Giambi bobblehead.

The whole context of the promotion make Mr. Rava's legal efforts even more deplorable. The Mother's Day promotion in question was the day of an A's-Twins contest that followed a 5k "Race For a Cure" event, a fundraiser for breast cancer research and support of breast cancer sufferers. The first 7,500 female fans entering McAfee Coliseum for the A's game were given the commemorative hat

Rava, who has initiated similar lawsuits against the Padres and Angels and was perhaps only attending the game in order to sue, claimed gender discrimination and filed a lawsuit. The A's decided last week to settle out of court. Since it's a class action suit, male attendees of that game may come forward and claim $100. But it's not $100 cash, it's $50 plus 2-for-1 A's tickets and a Macy's gift card

Shouldn't maybe Mr. Rava's attorney fees have been paid to him in two-for A's tickets and Macy's gift cards?

Joe Kukura is a freelance writer who would point out to miffed moms and fans that attorney Alfred G. Rava's contact information is publicly available on his State Bar of California attorney profile.

Rava is from San Diego. What is a sue happy lawyer doing at an A's-Twins game the very day that they were having a women's-only giveaway?

Rava has pretty much made a career out of such reverse-discrimination lawsuits. In a 2003 case, he and other men sued Club Med, who offered $400 discounts on airfare to women, and not men. Rava, a San Diego “men’s rights activist,” has been the plaintiff or the attorney in 40 similar cases.

I lay the great majority of the blame for this country’s state of internal decay squarely at the feet of the legal industry. Dick the butcher was a prophet.

Don’t forget that the race for the Cure and the Susan G Komen organization donate money to Planned Abortion (I mean Planned Parenthood)

Disagree. Man’s making a point.

Stop using victimology as a way of dividing society, or devolve into a mess of lawsuits.

I applaud the man. Don’t like lawyers, and don’t like lawsuits. An entire industry, however, based on shaking down corporations over creed, gender, and color is worse.

This is the guy’s point. I hope he uses gay marriage to destroy the family court system.

Two lesbians who adopted and decide to divorce, married in MA - that’s the ‘scorpions in a jar’ battle I want to see on Court TV.

Rava is not making a point. He is making a living by filing frivilous lawsuits. Our court systems should not be abused like this. Incompetent lawyers like him either find someone with deep pockets to sue or run for political office. No reputable law firm would hire him.

I didn’t know this. Irresponsible, with the link between breast cancer and abortion. There goes their credibility.

The trouble is that the stories of these ironies don’t get much legs. Society is thus further dumbed down rather than wised up.

It is the truth and you can verify it at any time.

Did you know about the link of abortions and breast cancer? A women is more likely to get breast cancer if they have an abortion?

I mentioned this to a major US computer supplies retailer when they had a Komen promotion late last year. That I didn’t cotton to seeing them ballyhoo such a double minded cause. Never heard back.

Yes, I had heard of the connection. I think it’s irresponsible for the Koman Foundation to support PP in this way. Koman has a good reputation, as far as know, but this isn’t a connection they should have.

I wish the women’s health issue weren’t so closely tied up with abortion. So many people have accepted the idea that they “can’t tell a woman what to do with her own body” - the pro-choicers have really framed the argument in their favor. Your retailer probably had no idea of how to respond.:)

Does he plan to sue Augusta?

Would he show up for the game if the give-away was a free box of maxipads to the first 7,500 people to enter the park?

What are they giving away on father’s day to the ladies?

This is the kind of a thing that's killing the USA. These sue lawyers are responsible for about 1/3 of the increase in medical care. When are we going to wake up and put a stop to this legal terrorism?
