New poll finds only 33 percent of Americans favor, a 9-point drop since April
The number of Americans who support same-sex marriage has plunged over the last few months, according to a new poll.
The CBS News/New York Times study found that 33 percent of respondents favor same-sex marriage. That represents a 9 percent drop since April.
Everett Rice, legislative coordinator for the California Family Council, said he has a theory about the decrease.
"People really recognize their core and their values, their heritage," he said. "When people want to go in and redefine that, it really goes against everybody's individual cultural understanding."
California has been the site of many protests, some violent, since voters passed Proposition 8 in November. The measure defines marriage in the state Constitution as solely the union of one man and one woman and has been met with outrage by many gay activists.
Gary Schneeberger, vice president of media and public relations for Focus on the Family Action, said the new poll numbers could very well represent a backlash from Americans who have seen several New England states legalize gay marriage through their legislatures, not the vote of the people.
The poll results also seem to indicate people are not relying solely on the mainstream news media to get their information on the issue of same-sex marriage.
"In reporting the results of its own poll, CBS used the word 'dip' to describe the 9 percent plunge in support for gay marriage," Schneeberger said. "In elections, it's considered a landslide when a candidate wins by 10 points. So to describe this as a 'dip' pretty clearly illustrates where CBS, at least, stands on this issue."
ROFL Is it just coincidence that the whole Perez Hilton/Carrie Prejean debacle occurred in April and exposed the hateful gay agenda?? I think not.
I agree with the backlash. In New England as well as CA. People have been pushed too far, and even a lot who didn’t care one way or another have, as they say, seen this issue in a new light. Forcing it on people is a loser for people.
“This so called same sex “marriage” agenda is one of the worst proposals ever.”
Say what?
(and the title could have been ‘support shrinks’)
Yeah, people are getting sick of them acting like such jerks for their agenda. All Carrie Prejean did was to espouse the exact same position that Barack Obama held during the 2008 election. I didn’t hear them say a damn thing in opposition to Obama over his rejection of gay marriage.
It is amazing when conservatives show a little backbone and stand up for their beliefs, what happens. Note to Conservatives...STOP BEING AFRAID TO EXPRESS YOUR VIEWS!!!!

Nuff said.
I don’t think there was ever much support for it. Every state that had an election on it voted it out. The only states being stuck with it had their rights over ridden by the courts.
Good point, and I would suggest that the "No On 8" group did exactly the same thing.
To know them is to oppose them.
Read recently that among gays themselves, ONLY 1% favor same sex marriage. Talk about a hair on a dogs tail wagging the dog!
I think people are tired of hearing about agenda peoples supposed rights.
I think, slowly, people are starting to realize that the media image of gay marriage is MUCH DIFFERENT than the reality.
The image being two otherwise-normal people of the same sex that want to live a life together and mind their own business, just like a straight married couple.
What people now see is the following:
1) Forced sexualization of kids in schools, with no opt-out (aka, Massachusetts)
2) ‘Married’ gays still running around like mad with other gays (i.e., infidelity is not a term in their lexicon).
3) Support for “new arrangements”, such as threesomes and who knows what else.
4) In-your-face behavior of gays, now that they’re making progress on forcing their lifestyle into the mainstream. You see it on ‘mainstream’ TV and in the news, where gay couples are reported on like they live in every other apartment. Similar to how the military is 10% women, but women are interviewed more than 50% of the time when news stories are done on soldiers.
5) Pictures of gay couples...it reminds people just what they are supporting and how far-out the concept is. I think this is killing their movement.
And the Grand Canyon is a ditch.
Can we skip the PC diplomacy and actually state the problem?
The reaction of the pervert activists and their supporters to the loss in California was loud, sustained, destructive and spiteful in the extreme. Merit and reasoned argument had no part in the discussion.
That turns normal people off. And the activists haven't a clue what to do next, other than to appeal to legislators and judges.
And we know the people's deteriorating opinion of those two arrogant, out-of-touch groups.
Thats funny.
Great post! Adding to your point #4:
-Gays have a quota in nearly every TV show, movie, etc. So now we have the token gay to go with the token black and the token woman.
-Plus the gay character, more and more, is being held up as the moral compass or the authority on what is right and wrong. Yeah, right, give the pyro the gas and matches.
Touche’, spot on, thank you!
Yes, and yes. And lest we forget the introduction and even enforcement of so called hate crimes laws.
Forgot that - good point!
What about the consitutional amendment to define marriage as between a man and a woman? Do you think this has a chance now?
I think the Dems are planning a roundabout strategy of getting gay marriage passed in all the blue states and then going to the Supreme Court to make all the states accept it. When there are enough states accepting gay marriage, the Dems and gays could use that as an excuse to force gay marriage on all the states. Of course, with Obama picking the Supreme Court justices, it wouldn’t be hard to do.
Well, some gay rights groups are starting to get whiny over the issue now.
We have been treated to a font row seat on all this stuff! A lot of folks refused to believe it, or they would say, oh that’s MA, let it sink into the sea, or let it go it is lost. I for one am glad the prop 8 thing, and the hateful Miss CA thing happened, it forced people to see.
Last Poll:
Gay Marriage: 42 %
Civil Unions: 25 %
No Recognition: 28 %
“Forty-two percent of Americans now say same sex couples should be allowed to legally marry, a new CBS News/New York Times poll finds. That’s up nine points from last month, when 33 percent supported legalizing same sex marriage”
New Poll:
Gay Marriage: 35 %
Civl Unions: 30 %
No Recognition: 32 %
Thanks. Even today having blacks shoved in our faces through advertising is incredibly annoying. We all know why they’re there.
What I got a kick out of was in Florida a year ago. There was a billboard for a builder and it showed a TOTALLY WHITE bunch of people (family and friend), and no one else with other characteristics (i.e., black, Hispanic, etc.). I guess the business had gotten so bad out there that this company had nothing to lose...they probably figured that no attorney in his right mind would sue them, since they were about to go bankrupt anyway. But still, it was an amazing act of desperation.
Even so...I don’t see the day when normal people could look at that same billboard with 2 dads and some kids and want to buy a house from that company...they may put the ad up there because they have to in order to stay out of jail, but it certainly will not be intended to drive sales (up). If that day comes, this country’s days are even more numbered than they are now.
Take America back!
Exactly correct! they can call it marriage, but it isn’t.
You can sit and call your TV a watermelon; just because you say doesn’t make it so.
-Support for Same-Sex Marriage Plummets-
Now there REALLY is no chance of getting this on the ballot in Massachusetts....”Cadillac” Deval has his daughter’s future “wedding” to think of,you know...
People are tired of having their faces rubbed in it.

Yep!
Advertising: Many folks have picked up on what’s going on with ads, and we do know what that’s going on. And if the govt. tells folks that they have to advertise this sh*t, that will just speed up Civil War 2, which might not be such a bad thing after all.
It’s called “fake marriage”...get it straight!
Homos want to impose their views and values on everyone. They are intolerant bullies.
Whenever they publish romantic pictures of loving same sex couples I bet the support plummets.
I don’t think people should be mean to gays because I believe most really are born that way. I just can’t see ignoring the reality tho that something had to go haywire for a person to end up that way. For most male gays marriage would be a joke. promiscuity is the norm. I understand many female gays tho do engage in long term loving relationships. Civil unions are probably a good compromise.
parsy, who thinks most gay males need big doses of cognitive therapy.
Frankly, I don’t care what happens on this issue. If they really think getting “married” will make them happy I think they are delusional.
Could it be that, emboldened by the push-back in California, others are finding their principles?

Ms. Poet, you might want to bookmark this, LOL!

That's 33% too many
Thanks for the bump. Me thinks our man Roy would be proud of Miss Carrie and tear Mr Hilton apart motivation by motivation and manipulation by manipulation. Evil thread by evil thread. Great post!
(Leonidas and Persian Ambassador embrace, Leonidas french kisses PErsian Ambassador)
Persian Ambassador: What the hell was that?
Leonidas: That’s how we greet in Sparta, high fives for the ladies and deep passionate tongue kisses for the men.
Persian Ambassador: (Looks around and notes several well muscled male couples) I take it you have a free society then.
Leonidas: The Freeest, is there a problem?
Persian Ambassador: No, no, I don’t think there is anything wrong with that....

That’s a big drop!
That’s because people have woken up to what the agenda will be once same sex marriage is allowed.
That sex education class for your kindergartner all of a sudden takes on a whole new look.
Ah, no thanks.
How is it for young people? They are the ones we need to convince.
