MIDVALE -- A man with a concealed weapons permit stopped two would-be Midvale robbers from making off with his friend's stuff.

Police say the men were coming home from an errand around 7 a.m. Wednesday morning when they spotted the suspects with their things. The suspects took off on foot.

One of the men being robbed grabbed a gun from his truck and started running after them.

Midvale police Detective Sgt. John Salazar said, "Grabs a loaded .40-caliber handgun and chases with the gun, shooting rounds either into the air or into the ground as they were chasing."

The gunfire stopped the suspects dead in their tracks. The men held the robbers at gunpoint until police arrived and arrested them.

No one was hurt.

Our policy is not to fire "warning" shots. It does not appear that deadly force was warranted here. However, it is to the benefit of society that robbers be put in jail. In this case, all appears to have ended well. It is hard to argue with success.

It is good that no one was hurt.

He needs to learn how to hit a moving target while on the run.

“However, it is to the benefit of society that robbers be put in jail”

Ummm, seems to me that it would be even more beneficial to society to put robbers in the ground; more cost effective too...

Stupid.

Never fire “warning shots.” Never fire at a “fleeing felon” unless they are still in your home. Even then it is morally and legally questionable if they were trying to flee. I know, Castle Defense, but do you really want to kill a kid who is trying to just get away.

If, however, if they are a imminent deadly threat to your PERSON or the PERSON of another, shoot to kill. Again, be very careful. Was the man in raggedy clothes pointing a gun at someone else an u/c cop arresting a well-dressed drug dealer? Could you have safely retreated without firing?

I have a problem with the “don’t shoot them in the back” notion. In theory it’s great, but how many fast moving crimes could have the criminal turning and thus (according to the law you are citing) not a target). If he is only a target when he is facing the victim, the victim is at a distinct disadvantage, one which I would argue is immoral.

If the perp has a gun in his hand and has made his intentions clear (roobing the sotre, threatenting people etc), IMHO it should be open season on the perp. Putting rule upon rule for ONE side to follow will only lead to innocent people getting killed trying to follow said rules.

We have become too civilized when marauding armed men have a list of rights!

What is the law in Utah. Even in Texas, I believe, it has to be dark to be chasing after a perp.

Not advisable to be shooting wildly if that is what occured.

I see two problems here. The first is in the story. Noting that the gun owner has a CC permit is counterproductive, as CC was not at issue, and it costs the gun owner the privacy of his CC permit.

The second thing was that his friends “stuff” was probably valued at under $300, but the cost of incarcerating two criminals will likely cost the public between $20,000 and $50,000 a year. This is to point out the significant cost savings involved with the use of several properly aimed .40 caliber rounds.

Not exactly true. Most important - Know your state law.

State laws vary from get out of your own house (some libtard state I will never visit again) to states like Texas where you can chase the perp until you decide to quit.

Yeah, maybe; but some lefty lawyer and lib judge will likely see that the perps get off on one technicality or another. The next victim might HAVE to kill them, or worse, might be killed BY them.
