ROSWELL, Ga. A Georgia liquor store clerk credits his police officer son with giving him two life-saving gifts a cell phone and a gun.
Joseph Wescott says the phone he slipped into his shirt pocket stopped a knife to his chest when a robbery suspect attacked him at the store in a northern Atlanta suburb. He then reached under the counter for the .40-caliber handgun and shot the man.
"The knife that he had looked like it was about 10-foot long," the 67-year-old Wescott exclaimed.
When the suspect lunged at Wescott, he fell back and the knife struck the battery area of the phone, the clerk said. He then fired one shot at the man Monday night.

But thugs have transportation.
Great video of the attack at:

Terrible story.
It says that the knife struck him in the cell-phone battery compartment.
It glosses over the fact that he discharged his weapon at the POS.
Could we, perhaps, get a more accurate description?
Oh, yeah, and by the way, given a choice between a handgun,or a cell phone, what would you rather have?
EXCELLENT video!!!!!!!!
If he had been stabbed, he might not have had the opportunity to shot the ahem, perp.....

"That was the first time I had ever fired that gun," he said.
Always, always, always familiarize yourself with a firearm. Especially one that is intended primarily for self defense.
I had a feeling Carlos JeanPeirre wasn't French.
Note that the clerk shot the suspect as he was running away from the scene of the crime. If I were in the clerk’s position, and that same thing went down, I’d be in jail on charges of attempted murder or, most likely, murder.
I’ll give you 2 reasons why:
1) My son isn’t a cop.
2) I live in New Jersey, not Georgia.
I’m glad that this guy wasn’t in your situation. The guy needed shooting and the perp, not the victim, should be in jail on charges of attempted murder.
The only thing wrong with this story is that the perp was still breathing. Anyone who is willing to stab an old man in the heart doesn’t deserve any more chance to live than he was willing to deal out.
2) I live in New Jersey, not Georgia.
My son is a cop.
But I live in Illinois
Never bring a knife to a gun fight.
Glad the clerk is okay.
Working at a liquor store in Atlanta, it probably won't be the last time.
Oh I think he very well might have. He was backing away as the thug was stabbing at him, at maximum extension.Note that even though the knife hit the battery compartment, the phone was still operable and used to call 911 after the perp was either down or at least heading for the tall grass. He would have been cut, but probably not all that seriously, certainly nothing to take him out immediately. It was on his left side, he used his right hand to fire the pistol, so even if stabbed in the left pectoral muscle, or thereabouts, he very likely would still have been able to shoot. Of course his adrenaline level would have higher, and he might have shot the "suspect" multiple times.
In the video he was quoted as saying he had owned and shot guns for years, just never shot AT someone. Perhaps in this article he was misquoted, or perhaps while he had never fired that particular gun, with that serial number, he had fired one or more just like it.
Now if the clerk had been practicing double tap, center of mass shooting the creep wouldn’t be suffering non-critical wounds and wouldn’t be fed, clothed and sheltered by taxpayers.
My sister is a cop and
I live in Alaska.
The store owner stated very clearly on the Fox tape that it was the ‘first time he’d had to shoot at someone’.
The posted article is from the AP. Tough call, storeowner, AP, storeowner, AP.....NOT!
The posted article has been filtered through the ASSociated Press, any semblance to the truth is accidental and totally unintentional especially in reference to whites, Christians, conservatives, guns, the Constitution, the US flag, and/or servicemen and women. A non-lethal encounter with a .40 cal round????
That is some very poor shooting at such close range!!!!!
Even without a head or center of chest shot — a .40 cal should create a large enough blood stream to bleed to death is one is a little slow with the 911 call..
How true. We "subjects" in the Garden State are not allowed to arm ourselves because the NJ Supreme Court thinks that the "proliferation of firearms" is dangerous to society. Hmmmm. Even if your son were a cop in NJ, you'd still get charged with discharging a firearm, and I hope you have a permit to keep it at your business, or they'd add that one on too. I'm not sure if the castle doctrine applies to liquor stores, so they'd probably find some bogus charge there as well. You'd probably also get charged with attempted murder, and you'd be sued by the scumbag's family for denying them a right to income. Great state we live in, yes?????
Living in Illinois, the only way I could legally carry a gun is to carry my son around on my back and he’s bigger than I am.

Don’t tell the perpos that! :)
So good to see and hear good news! Thnx for the story, video and ping...
Rhetorical question right?
I’m not familiar with NJ laws— clerks are required by law to be unarmed?
Ah, media filtering strikes again.
“filtered”! You beat me to it!
“Rhetorical question right?”
I think this a classic case of a rhetorical question.
Sounds like a machete attack.
