The best web site that I have seen that gives detailed information on which TV channels should be receivable at a given location is tvfool.com.

While some of the information that they give is technical in nature (and therefore of great interest to 'enthusiasts' like me), their charts should be accessible to people who are only moderately tech-savvy... You can use the color code to help figure out whether or not you can expect to receive certain channels based on the type of antenna you have...

I found that an amplified antenna is almost a requirement to get the DTV signal.

Somehow, some way, the gubment has made a relatively simple thing (watching TV) somewhat confusing.

Make sure the roof-top antenna is pointed at the Sears Tower and all the stabilizers are solid. It could have been moved by a strong wind gust.

The FCC should have forced all stations to move to either UHF or VHF for digital broadcasts and not the mix that exists today.

Different antennas for different radio waves...

I can’t get Fox or PBS here in a Phoenix after the transition. No loss really on PBS, except for the food channel, but Fox actually has some good shows.

Just helping out the TV antenna manufacturers, that’s all.

Now ABC is pissed because they lost big numbers of viewers in the Nielson ratings because of the HD move. There are lotza lost viewers out there. Talk radio will reap the losses as new listeners.

Digital TV signals are a lot more directional than the old analog ones were. Also, if your parents are in an area with a lot of obstructions, they may not get the kind of reception they used to have. The first thing to do is to make sure you know where the broadcast antennas are located, and point your parents’ antenna in that direction. You can find out where your stations have their broadcast antennas at http://www.antennaweb.org. Next, make sure your parents have a true VHF/UHF antenna. As noted in the article, DTV is a lot more particular about what kind of antenna you have.

I live in Texas, where it’s pretty flat too, and I have found that even small differences in elevation make a huge difference in reception. I lived for a while in an apartment where a small tabletop antenna would get me nearly 20 digital stations. I then moved to a house, about 30-50 feet lower, and about 8 miles away, and I get nothing. I am currently refurbishing the big antenna up on my chimney so I can get TV again.

The Chinese box has a generic signal-strength monitor. The Taiwanese box displayed the signal strength of each individual station.

I liked the Chinese remote better, but I'll ditch it in a heartbeat if some other box works better.

Oh, yeah it's a "true" antenna. I installed it myself (years ago). Cost me a pretty penny, too.

(Nice to see that they are still made in the U.S.A.)

If I may

THe antenna may be OK, is the cable old/sun-bleached? May be time for a new cable between TV and Antenna.

I would suggest solid copper core RG-6 coax cable with a UV stablized outer coating. It may not be cheap, but climbing up on the roof isn’t much fun either.

Have a good day.

>>>> I am beginning to think this entire conversion scheme was imposed by Congress in order to benefit the cable TV industry. <<<<<

It didn’t work here.

we’ve been off cable for years, and are now doing Netflix, Roku, and broadcast HDTV only for the local weather and occasional sports event.

“Nothing worth wacthing on either channel. Move on.”

Ain’t that the truth. I noticed they were gone, but haven’t gotten to the point of caring enough to fix it.

I wonder if this will hit their ad revenues.....I suspect it is bound to.
