As far as I am aware this has never happened before in any administration - Democrat or Republican.
A free and independent press is one of the legs on which all representative governments rest. If we have lost it, The American Experiment's remaining time is short indeed.
UPDATED: I have personally authenticated the purported letter from the RNC via a phone call to their national headquarters. They have verbally confirmed it and promised to send me written confirmation by email.

Late Monday night, Republican National Committee Chief of Staff Ken McKay fired off a complaint to the head of ABCNEWS:
Dear Mr. Westin:
As the national debate on health care reform intensifies, I am deeply concerned and disappointed with ABC's astonishing decision to exclude opposing voices on this critical issue on June 24, 2009. Next Wednesday, ABC News will air a primetime health care reform “town hall” at the White House with President Barack Obama. In addition, according to an ABC News report, GOOD MORNING AMERICA, WORLD NEWS, NIGHTLINE and ABC’s web news “will all feature special programming on the president’s health care agenda.” This does not include the promotion, over the next 9 days, the president’s health care agenda will receive on ABC News programming.
Today, the Republican National Committee requested an opportunity to add our Party's views to those of the President's to ensure that all sides of the health care reform debate are presented. Our request was rejected. I believe that the President should have the ability to speak directly to the America people. However, I find it outrageous that ABC would prohibit our Party's opposing thoughts and ideas from this national debate, which affects millions of ABC viewers.
In the absence of opposition, I am concerned this event will become a glorified infomercial to promote the Democrat agenda. If that is the case, this primetime infomercial should be paid for out of the DNC coffers. President Obama does not hold a monopoly on health care reform ideas or on free airtime. The President has stated time and time again that he wants a bipartisan debate. Therefore, the Republican Party should be included in this primetime event, or the DNC should pay for your airtime.

It’s a couple of decades PAST time to storm the Bastille. I’ve been loading up on pitchforks.
Your “wish” may come true. This admin is going about pissing off just about everyone who didn’t support him while at the same time showing extreme weakness to our enemies. It wouldn’t surprise me that he is setting the table for either a foreign or domestic terrorist act to happen. The guy who plays president on tv was caught on tape explaining his disagreement with the Constitution because “it limits what the government can do the the American people.” And with the formerly independant press just throwing away their place guaranteed by the Constitution, I do not believe that anyone will speak out when barak takes over. It seems that he wants to become this country’s first dictator and the press is happily helping him along.
Any news programming from ABC is an infomercial for the DNC, as far as I can tell.
No—it will be a Media Czar who will control all media and air waves. When Fox fires Beck and Hanity that will be the sign that US Government will control of all media. That should be a sign that the second revolution is about to begin.

That response from WFAA doesn’t surprise me.
Back in 2001, they ran a bogus story about a phony marine. (He was a Marine Corps reservist, but he made up a story about fighting in Afghanistan.) The story stunk to high heaven and a few Freepers, including me called the reporter on it.
The reporter threatened us for impugning the phony. It turned out that the story was completely fake and the guy had made it up to cover up a month-long bender.
Is this the signal that we have reached the end of the line?
I really don't know but I think they could. What the station manager fails to understand, or maybe he does, is regardless if this is network or local his station will still get painted with the same brush. Guess the only thing to do is email ABC, like they care.
I am not surprise. They no longer allow readers of their website to post comments, that stopped about 3 weeks ago or so. When they did allow comments I noticed that when they ran against the community organizer in chief they would pull the story. Hmmm, bias...have to think about that one.
