If the Republican Party is in danger of being marginalized as a conservative, white-male Southern enclave, is Haley Barbour - the longtime Washington power broker and current Mississippi governor - the best person to turn things around?

I think the only people who are obsessed with this are Beltway Pundits, spurred on by trash talking Democrats.

I don't think Haley ever thought about running for President. I don't think his wife was thrilled about the idea, and everyone knows that when Mama ain't happy, ain't NOBODY happy!

Haley's strong suit is talking up the conservative Republican brand, and fundraising. He can do those things without being a candidate for anything at all.

I agree. I believe the public at large is looking for GOOD CANDIDATES, period. If they are white, black, male, female, young or old is very secondary. The pundits are hung up on identity politics because that’s how members of the (liberal)chattering class think. And identity politics is really just a type of bigotry which gives voters no credit whatsoever for having any judgment or discretion.

Haley was once a conservative and he really upset the rino’s apple cart. That was years ago. Often “conservative” are reborn as rinos after being corrupted by power over the long term.

If he starts taking on socialism and Obamamessiah and the fascist banksters, and the go-along-to-get-along rinos, I will listen to him. If he is a “don’t rock McCain’s bi-partisan boat” and “Reagan is dead” messanger, he can get lost. If he fails to mention the loss of constitutional government and rights, I will gladly send him packing.

If he pulls the GOP to the majority of conservatives, he is welcome. If he tries to pull the party to the intolerant moderates, he can have the Colin Powell’s Rino pup tent all to himself.

I don’t know about others, but I am not voting for the lessor of two evils anymore unless conservatives totally dominate the party. I want to see conservative reform ideas and clear and effective opposition voices front and center from the GOP.

And he beleives emminent domain should be used to take private property for use by a private enterprise (such as a shopping center or manufacturing plant.)
That’s a deal killer for me.

I would agree if he was being nominated to the Supreme Court, but when you consider that the President simply does not get involved in eminent domain cases, this doesn't concern me.

The two people on my radar for 2012 are Bobby Jindal and Sara Palin (in that order.)

IMHO, Barbour is a huge step down from those two. There is a reason the press (and elite Republicans) both excoriate both of them. They are a threat to the status quo. They break the stereotype of Republicans being rich, white guys, and they are both reformers that have stood up to the insiders in their own states (including Republicans.)

Barbour isn’t going to get any of the Tea Party folks fired up (although he might get some of Bob Dole’s old supporters excited) and he isn’t going to draw any moderates (much less crossover votes from Democrats.)

More importantly for me, Palin and Jindal are the real deal. In politics for the right reasons, but their vision of their life isn’t tied to having a big political career.

Barbou, imho, has a CAREER as a politician. He would seek the presidency as the next step in his political career.

And I’ve had enough of career politicians.

I do not like career politicians either, but I do want seasoned politicians. Running a government is not like other jobs, and amateurs generally don’t figure it out until they are about to leave office.

When Haley was at the helm of the RNC, we actually won stuff.

You know what I think about the prospects, and you know what I think of Haley.

I’m thinking Beauty and the Beast. ;o)
