Vice President Dick Cheney on Monday hit back at CIA Director Leon Panetta, over his suggestion that Cheney wants another terrorist attack on U.S. soil.
"I hope my old friend Leon was misquoted," said Cheney in a statement provided to The Hill. "The important thing is whether or not the Obama administration will continue the policies that have kept us safe for the last eight years."
Panetta, a veteran politician who served as Bill Clinton's chief of staff, had criticized Cheney for "gallows politics" and said the former vice president hoped the country were subject to another terrorist attack.
"I think he smells some blood in the water on the national-security issue," Panetta told The New Yorker's Jane Mayer. "Its almost, a little bit, gallows politics. When you read behind it, its almost as if hes wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point. I think thats dangerous politics."
In recent months, Cheney has become a leading Republican voice in warning the Obama administration has pursued policies that make the country less safe.
When the "truth squad" guys sign on to FR they all sound like that ~ and they are easily outed.
McCain demands Panetta retract comments about Cheney
###
CIA Director Leon Panetta should immediately retract comments he made to the New Yorker magazine suggesting former Vice President Cheney is wishing for another terrorist attack on the U.S., Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) demanded Monday.
“I disagreed with the Cheney policy on interrogation techniques, but never did it cross my mind that Dick Cheney would ever want an attack on the United States of America,” the former Republican presidential candidate said during an appearance on Fox News. “It’s unfair, and I think that Mr. Panetta should retract, and retract immediately.”

Sorry, Mac ... you are the dustbin of history.
Why does John McCain have to take a hit for doing the right thing?
“When you read behind it, its almost as if hes wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point. I think thats dangerous politics.”
It must be a projection of his own disgusting habits from when he kept reading the NYT every morning hoping for bad news from Iraq...what a slime this guy is...
“my old friend” is Washington codeword for horsesarse.
"It's really a sad day for our country when someone who is the head of the CIA actually says something this stupid. Who does Leon think he is, Joe Biden?"
0bama’s people attack Rush and Cheney, then eat crow.
For saying he doesn’t agree with the
interrogation techniques that saved
lives and prevented attacks here, which
is his constant mantra ?
Defies and denies reality.
ping to steal this picture later...
He has personal issues with waterboarding. If that was the only possible way to deal with terrorists, you might have a point, but it’s not and was rarely done.
Tomorrow this will probably be described as an vicious unwarranted attack by the former vice president.
McCain actually sticking up for a fellow Republican? I'm in shock.
Panetta seems to be questioning Dick Cheney’s patriotism.
Strange, I thought only Republicans did that.
IMO, the point is what’s critical is the outcome
of the Bush/Cheney decision to use whatever steps
it took at the appropriate times, with the particular
savages who had the pertinent info, to protect the
USA.
McCain always sidestraddles and clouds that bottom
line ... to a sickening degree.
They did not use techniques, wrongly described as
“torture” deliberately or merely for the sake of
torture, especially since our Special Ops troops
are “tortured” routinely in training.
Bush/Cheney did whatever it took to produce vital
information to prevent catastrophes here, probably
more than a couple and maybe more than we’ll ever
know, and God bless them.
This is what you get when you appoint a partisan hack like Panetta as CIA director, instead of someone with actual national security/intelligence experience.
Damn I love that picture.
“I hope my old friend Leon was misquoted,” said Cheney

Brilliant move Mr Cheney.
You attract more flies with honey than vinegar.
Then ‘BAM’...... It’s fly swat time.
He's not so much speaking up for Cheney as he is riding the coattails of the Cheney story to get his name in the news.
John McCain loves John McCain first, best and always. Whatever he needs to do or say to be in the news, it will be done and said.
How does sending terrorists to a vacation paradise in Bermuda prevent another attack on America, Leon?
______________
What’s even better is that our tax dollars get to pay for housing, food, etc. for them to play in Bermuda.
Class
My question is: Who is speaking up for Cheney??
Looks like GWB is looking down and biting his tongue to keep from saying what’s on his mind, and Cheney is looking straight at Obummer with an “I’ve got your number, puppy.” look in his eye.
I have a deep affection for Vice President Cheney and President Bush, but I also do not harbor the rage against McCain that so many do. He does plenty of good things and shouldn’t be trashed when he’s on the right side of an issue. I have sympathy for McCain’s suffering and on this particular issue, of what he considers torture, I allow for more understanding than perhaps on other issues.
Are you punch-drunk? Kroft said. What's with the Obama administration and it's obsession with the gallows? No, no. There's gotta be a little gallows humor to get you through the day, Obama said, with a laugh.

Awe..she is a cutie. My dog is named Abby too. What kind of dog is it?
What a freaking partisan hack is Panetta. His head is so far up, he has to open his mouth to see.
Cute!
Abbey is adorable! Rush is one lucky guy!
I think Sheepdog ... an adorable bundle of fluff.
At the suggestion of another FReeper, it's now my wallpaper.
I smile every time I see it :-)
Is that a Porti? Tell me he didn’t copy that stupid dog odumbo has.
No.
Panetta really meant exactly what he said: Cheney “wants” a new terrorist attack so Cheney can put the blame for that attack on Obama.
That was a very good response. You should send it to Chaney to use.
What happened to Rush’s cat?
I allow for more understanding than perhaps on other issues.

I see you do ... however, recall that the Bush
Admin, as far as we know and I personally believe,
NEVER SANCTIONED OR DID ANYTHING LIKE THE
BRUTALITY MCCAIN ENDURED TO ANY MUSLIM
BEAST, DERANGED JIHADIST, OR TERRORIST,
captured in the act of planning to destroy
our country, or plotting to/or attempting to
or actually murdering or viciously decapitating
or eviscerating our precious brave troops.
No .... paradigm ... there.
‘Nuff said.
Punkin is tolerating the pooch with no problems ... LOL.
Great, great pic. It’s is almost a Norman Rockwell with it’s complex yet basic look at a pivotal moment in American politics
Good points. It also sets up the demonetization of Bush/Cheney for when we are attacked.
For example: One of Obama’s muslim buddies blow up a dirty bomb in NY. Obama and his henchmen immediately respond by saying, “I hope Bush/Cheney are happy now...they got what they wanted.”
They perpetuate the lie and demonize them at the same time. The sheeple nod their heads in agreement, “What evil people they are.” without ever bothering to question whether the Obamatrons are lying or not.
Some perfect conservatives on FR love hearing themselves talk ... just saying ...
BTW, also remember spouting off over the internet is easier and more acceptable than spouting off in person ...

Maybe he should be taking statements from the CIA ops who “lie to Congress, all the time” ?
I would be more accurate to say "sticking up for a fellow NeoCon".
This whole thing about bashing Obama is not very convincing because Bush replaced the NeoCons in 2006 with the Realists/Pragmatists. Cheney is really bashing the administration he served in.
Candidate Obama adopted the Realist's policies and Obama's policies were endorsed by all the Realists. OTOH, McCain campaigned on NeoCon policies and was endorsed by the NeoCons.
Bob Gates resigned from the Iraq Study Group to become Sec of Defense under Bush in 2006. Obama retained Gates.
This big conflict is actually a conflict among republicans.
I can’t believe you just ended a post with “’nuff said.”
He might be speaking up for Cheney, but he’s no Republican, much less a Conservative.
Me too.
Bush looks like he’s trying verrry hard to hold back laughter at this numbskull, who talked a great game and knows how to do NOTHING.
But Cheney? Cheney’s like “see this eye? I have killed people with this eye.”
