While I think that Letterman's joke about A-Rod "knocking up" a Palin daughter was out of line even if he was referring to Bristol, it is obviously not as sick or twisted as the joke would have been had its subject been a 14-year-old. I know that Letterman is crass, but he isn't that perverted nor stupid, and neither is his audience, which would have booed had they thought that he was referring to a 14-year-old. As for the second joke, the one about the Palins having to keep Spitzer away from their daughter (again, Bristol), it sounds like one of Letterman's lame jokes about Spitzer being a horndog, and Letterman would have told the same joke about 16-year-old Miley Cyrus going to Yankee Stadium without anyone assuming that he was calling her a prostitute (although he would have caught flak for "sexualizing" a 16-year-old, albeit one that chose to sexualize herself in a photo shoot).
I know that it is easy to believe the worst about liberals such as Letterman, but I honestly think that a lot of decent, nonjudgmental conservatives are reaching a bit here. Yes, I know that Bristol was not at the game, and that it was Willow that attended with her parents, but do you really expect someone like Letterman to double-check which Palin daughter was at the game before choosing to make a tasteless joke about her 18-year-old daughter whose pregnancy last year delighted liberals keen on trying to weave stories of "hypocrisy" out of what was in truth a very principled and caring decision made by Todd and Sarah Palin to provide loving yet stern support for their daughter after her mistake? The sad part is that had the media reported that the Palins and their children had attended the game, Letterman would have made those same jokes even had it turned out that little Piper had been the only Palin daughter at the game, not because he would make jokes about pedophilia, but because when he hears the words "Palin's children" he immediately thinks of Bristol, who for Letterman is a walking punchline (as are A-Rod and Spitzer, BTW). I think that we need to realize that Letterman told inappropriate jokes about the Palins' 18-year-old daughter that last year made a mistake that, unfortunately, she will never be able to live down (if Bristol invented a car that runs on water, the first sentence of the New York Times article on her invention would be "Bristol Palin, who made headlines as a 17-year-old when her out-of-wedlock pregnancy was revealed by her mother, then Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, has invented an automobile that can run on waste water"), not disgusting, sickening jokes about the Palins' 14-year-old daughter Willow that has never provided any fodder for comedians. I think that we should stop focusing so much on the incident and not give Letterman any more free publicity.
And that's my two cents on the subject.
I don’t buy this for a second.
1) It was about Willow. The fact that she was the only one accompanying her parents to NY was not lost on CBS, Letterman and his writers. He said Palins daughter at the stadium. Thats Willow. Also evertime talking about Bristol he named her. Evertime talking about Willow he just said “Palin’s daughter”. In every case of his “jokes” during the past day the subject was Willow, who was the only one in NY. This could not have been overlooked by the writers, staff and Letterman himself.
2) Whether it was meant to be Bristol doesnt make this any better.
3) Letterman then an evening LATER made another joke about Eliot Spitzer laying his hands on Palins daughter. Again the only one there was Willow. By then he KNEW that Willow was the one in NY. He again on purpose didnt name the daughter, to cover his sorry rear.
4) In his lame non-excuse he further insulted Willow specifically by inferring that her rape would be promiscuous sex on her part! And then hurled insult against Bristol, signaling that its fair to smear her.
And his invitation to the Palins was a pathetic provocation.
5) To top off the travesty he yucked that the slut joke was funny and had some deranged guest calling Todd Palin a tool.
6) Letterman is THAT depraved and shameless. He thinks he can get away with it, and judging from the MSM attitude he seems to have a point. The Palin’s are fair game for every abomination as far as the MSM is concerned.
I listen to Rush every day and I never heard him call her a dog.
It was Rush's tv show. He mentioned something about the White House getting a new dog and up flashed a picture of Chelsea onto the screen.
If you keep reading the thread, this is further discussed.
Well, reasonable minds may disagree regarding what Letterman meant. And assuming that when you say that “Whether it was meant to be Bristol doesnt make this any better” you mean that Letterman purposely said “her daughter” instead of “Bristol” as a way of having people think he meant Willow while keeping plausible deniability, then I respect your opinion on that point as well. But I would like to reiterate that I think that it makes all the difference in the world if Letterman honestly meant to joke about A-Rod impregnating a sexually active 18-year-old versus A-Rod impregnating a 14-year-old, since such joke about Willow would be sick and perverted but about Bristol would be merely crass and inappropriate.
I’m not apologizing for Letterman. I’m apologizing to the Palins because there are boorish, misanthrope people who are afraid of what she stands for. I’m apologizing because she has to undergo attacks from disgusting people like Letterman. I fervently hope that CBS fires his butt.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Contessa is a big beeyotch and it was great to see her get smacked down.
Did anyone catch the audience reaction to his “little joke”? They applauded and laughed with gusto. That meant they agreed with dl. How sick is that?????
That was the worst part.
It’s things like this that give New Yorkers a bad name.
I didn’t see that. He shouldn’t have done that.
