Dear Leader Kim Jong Il’s successor Kim Jong Un is a Schwarzenegger fan

Roger Boyes in Berlin

The man who may one day have his finger on the North Korean nuclear button was taught basketball by an Israeli and is a fan of Japanese cartoons and Arnold Schwarzenegger, aka the Terminator, a former schoolmate revealed yesterday.

Kim Jong Un, the son of the Dear Leader and grandson of the Great Leader, was a bright outgoing pupil when he entered his teenage years at the International School of Berne, according to the former fellow pupil.

Mystery surrounding the health of the North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il, who seems to have nominated his son as his political heir, has made the trivia of Mr Kim Jr’s schooldays interesting to intelligence services.

Will Kim Jong Un, 26, open up one of the most closed societies in the world? What are his views on non-bodybuilding Americans? And how itchy will that trigger finger be?

To Kim Jong-il, the first son Jong-nam is a weirdo, the second son Jong-chol is a sissy, and the youngest son Jong-un has most desirable qualities to be his successor. He is said to resemble his father in character and physical appearance. Not a reassuring assessment for outsiders who are dying to read too much of Gorbachev or Deng Xiao-ping in him.

The boy knows what it takes to remain as a leader in the Stalinist country based on personality cult. There would be no Chinese style soft-landing in N. Korea under Kim Jong-un. There would be only different degree of hard landings. We only have to choose the least painful one.

Well maybe Arnold can quit “terminating” California and go terminate him.

Real Arnold is a 'political girlie-man.' Don't expect too much of him.

However, this robot might do the job.

I'm not sure the aging Beefcake is still up to the task.

Yeah, yeah, and Konstantin Chernenko liked westerns and American jazz. We’ve heard it all before.

I think it was Yuri Andropov who liked those things. You know, the one-time KGB chief then a Soviet leader , and the mentor of Putin. They could love western entertainment all they want, but they were still die-hard commies. The were just being ‘more equal’ than others.:-) Enjoying the privilege that comes with their power.

Question for you. Do you think the war lords who control the various military districts will fall in line? Or will we see a power struggle break out into the open?

They may not fall in line. The sweeping purge is a prerequisite for succession process. Those who are on the losing side could be looking for help from outside.

S. Korean intel agency is already expecting the rise of defections by high-level NK officials, when the succession process picks up speed.

There are already outside powers circling around NK for going in and influencing the future direction of NK. State controls are not what it used to be. Many people, officials and military folks are now quite apathetic.

Losers in the power struggle now have a second chance with outside help.
