Intel firestorm: Republicans reveal briefing info (on-the-record interviews)
The Hill ^ | 6/4/09 | Jared Allen

Posted on 06/05/2009 3:11:31 PM PDT by Jean S

Republicans ignited a firestorm of controversy on Thursday by revealing some of what they had been told at a closed-door Intelligence Committee hearing on the interrogation of terrorism suspects.

Democrats immediately blasted the GOP lawmakers for publicly discussing classified information, while Republicans said Democrats are trying to hide the truth that enhanced interrogation of detainees is effective.

GOP members on the Intelligence Committee on Thursday told The Hill in on-the-record interviews that they were informed that the controversial methods have led to information that prevented terrorist attacks.

Suddenly any reference to classified material is an outrage, it sounds like they said nothing more than others have said about these reports in general.

"GOP members on the Intelligence Committee on Thursday told The Hill in on-the-record interviews ....

You've got to like that "on the record" part. Strategy-wise it puts a face to what would otherwise be rumors. And it gives the media somebody to go back to when/if Obama starts to argue.

This is "the Cheney strategy" all over again. Beautiful.

If the Dims really want to go down this road, I say we throw Rockefeller and Leahy over the side. They’ve both revealed classified intel by the boatloads.

And who was the Senator who actually spoke the name of a covert agent on the Senate floor during debate. Or was that somebody in the House? The case is on the tip of my tongue, but I can’t quite reach it. Who was that?

While it's true that Republicans have been put in a position that they have to fight back, frankly I find the whole thing appalling.

Those in Congress were elected to represent us and protect our country, yet are sitting around playing childish partisan games with an issue as sensitive as this, ought to be tossed out of office.

Either water-boarding worked in gathering intel to prevent attacks, or it didn't. Isn't there one person in Congress willing to tell the truth on this issue and let the partisan chips fall where they may?

Who can trust these people? Any of them!

Yeah, I’d like to see all, or even just one, of these so-called “conservative” rats elected to congress stand up and speak the truth about this once and for all. If they’re really conservatives and want the best in terms of national security and intel for our efforts against our self-identified enemies, then they need to put up or STFU and get off the ballot.

OK, I just want to get this straight, hearing something at an intelligence hearing then going out and lying about it is A-OK, because, after all, you are not “revealing” a state secret.
Telling the truth about it, however, is a crime because it is revealing a state secret!
So from now on, whenever something is said at a security briefing, go out and LIE, that way you are not revealing state secrets.
Welcome to Alice in Wonderland.

Specifics? Or did they just say, “Yep. As reported before, we have confirmation that there was intelligence gained as a result of these interrogations.”

Yes, but is that because the news favors Republicans? Or is it that he is just honest and would say the same if it favored the Democrats?

My point is that they -- Republicans and Democrats-- are playing these games with our security, with our lives, like it's football & they want "their team" to win. Their "team" should be the "the US", their country ---"the American people" who elected them -- not their Party!

Frankly, most members of both Parties these days make me sick. They're in it for themselves, each other and their financial campaign sponsors -- not for us and not for America.

Sorry when I hear the words “My point is that they — Republicans and Democrats— are ...” — I zone out. The main problem is the dems. We must encourage those Republicans with spines or get new Republicans on the field. In this article we see we have a few Republicans worth encouraging.

Physician, heal thyself.

“The hearing did address the enhanced interrogation techniques that have been much in the news lately,” Kline said, noting that he was intentionally choosing his words carefully in observance of the committee rules and the nature of the information presented.

“Based on what I heard and the documents I have seen, I came away with a very clear impression that we did gather information that did disrupt terrorist plots,” Kline said.

Neither Hoekstra nor Kline revealed details about the specifics of what they were told Thursday or the identity of the briefers.

“I am absolutely shocked that members of the Intelligence committee who attended a closed-door hearing … then walked out that hearing — early, by the way — and characterized anything that happened in that hearing,” said Intelligence Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations Chairwoman Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.). “My understanding is that’s a violation of the rules. It may be more than that.”

But it's okay for treasonous Democrats to report falsely about the same hearings.
