An artist's proposal to create a pink cloud over the intersection of Market and Castro streets is creating a stir in one of San Francisco's most whimsical neighborhoods.
The idea is recycled from 2000, when artist Christian Werthmann's "pink cloud" was one of two winning proposals for a city art piece to commemorate the late Harvey Milk, a supervisor and gay rights advocate.
There was no money at the time to fund the project, so it was shelved.
Now it's back - revived by Supervisor Bevan Dufty and the San Francisco Arts Commission to add some flair to the temporary public plaza that opened last month at the intersection.
"Milk always had a knack for theatrical entrances, and we were trying to come up with something that matched his personality and sense of humor," Werthmann said.
Some do find the idea delightful; others say it conjures a toxic cloud that's destined to cause a car wreck. Then there are practical questions: Will the wind send the cloud cruising down Castro Street?
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission is paying (Harvard professor)Werthmann $9,500 for a feasibility study, which should take about three months.
While many in the audience of a dozen found the idea intriguing, they had some concerns.
"It could enliven the space and bring people to the area," said Jennifer Lovvorn, public art project manager for the Arts Commission. "Imagine being at the Ferry Building, and seeing a pink thing in the distance and saying, 'What's that?'

We honor him by passing pink gas.
Floaty cloud art was tried in downtown Norfolk, VA, and the fool thing went blowing down the street, endangering traffic and pedestrians alike. It’s now hanging safely inside the Selden Arcade, unseen, unwaving, but still paid for by city money.
Stupid arts people.
$9,500?? I hope the city lay-offs hit SF double hard.
Fidel Castro: Comrades, our nation is completely bankrupt. We have no choice but to abandon communism. (his aides groan) I know, I know. But we knew from Day 1 this mumbo-jumbo wouldnt fly. (aides make sounds of agreement) I call Washington and tell them they won.Aide: But Presidente, America tried to kill you!
Fidel: Ah, they not so bad. They named a street after me in San Francisco. (another aide whispers something in Fidels ear) Is full of whaaaa?!
Gee, it sure is great to know that California has all this extra money floating around for these government funded projects.

And, California is so much richer now???
and of course they want the taxpayers to fund this idiocy
I think you can create a pink cloud with Inhibited Red Fuming Nitric Acid (IRFNA).
Just saying.
I’ll bet the public restrooms in SF already have plenty of pink clouds in them.

Yeah....being at the fairy building for sure!
Your tax dollars at work.
California is still bankrupt....
