In an effort to put the lingering image of a failed government response to Hurricane Katrina to rest, the Obama Administration moved Wednesday to get about 5,000 Gulf Coast residents out of FEMA trailers through $50 million in housing vouchers and, for those interested, a chance to buy a trailer for as little as $1.
A joint plan announced by the Federal Energy Management Agency and the Department of Housing and Urban Development would make the $50 million in newly appropriated money available on a priority basis to low-income Gulf Coast residents of Mississippi and Louisiana. There will also be expanded transition services and funding from the stimulus bill to help with such services as security deposits.

It's about time for some transition. Do we do this all over the USA?
And,goodness, you just know how well they were maintained!
They were $5.00 according to the story this morning.
And I just took out a $4.99 mortage on mine! Damn!
Trailers for a buck. The current residents will still end up renting them.
They got a grip of’em sitting back in the woods on Fort Pickett, VA.
I can't imagine what the fumigation costs will be.
They are planning to put them in foreclosed homes in our neighborhoods....Heard it earlier today...
Excellent. They gotta live somewhere, and habitation below sea level sho ain’t too slick. Oklahoma has some enchanting trailer parks from what I understand.
People who lost everything in Ike have been cut off and Katrina freeloaders are still living in hotels!
I heard this as well, and I immediately thought, will they receive vouchers for property tax as well? HOA dues, too? How about general upkeep and landscaping services, will their neighbors-I mean-the govt assist them with these responsibilities as well?
Don’t be surprised to see it happen.
A guy I know who was appraoched by FEMA to store trailers on his acreage when they told him they would pay him $6000. It was land just sitting there...we're a rural area. They paid him $6000 a MONTH and he thought they were talking a YEAR.!
Were these the ones making people sick because of formaldehyde (or something akin to it) fumes?
Would you really even want one of these things for $1?

Drove down to Galveston today. I couldn’t even tell there had been a storm only 8 months ago.
Mother in law suite? Place for your boomerang kids to live in, so they don’t want to stay home?
Did you go to Boliver?
I’m sure they’re no different than any other trailer.
They use lots of particle board for cabinets, etc.
But with ventilation it’s not a big deal.
Unless you’re an EPA Democrat looking for some publicity.
Locally 2 of the ones they stayed in had to be torn down,,,!
Last years storms,,,
News showed the NOLA crowd “protesting” as soon as they
got off the buses here because they didn't go to a hotel.
Maybe they should save those trailers...
i suppose telling them to get a JOB and pay their own way is out of the question...
You can tear the paneling out and replace it with something nicer with no fumes and still have less than $1000 in the trailor.
LOL
Soon taxpayers will be paying much more than a dollar to dispose of these toxic mobile slum hobbles. Can you imagine the smell? Toxic. Who do you think is still living in these, hard working up in the morning go geters? Soviet slums are likely in better condition.
Napalm urban renewal.
Trailers, Tractors and Manufactured Housing for the current items up for bid.
“Trailers for a buck. The current residents will still end up renting them.”
Post of the day.
Few actually did. Pathetic.
The report I saw Sunday nite had Katrina people still in hotels being told they had to get out. It was on Houston TV...I’m not sure where the hotels were....Houston or NOLA.
Fishing cabin? Hunting cabin? Duck blind?
Actually I have been following the auctions at http://gsaauctions.gov/gsaauctions/gsaauctions/, and the FEMA trailers are going for an average of about $3500.

"I'll buy that for a dollar."

~~~
WOW,,,New one on me,,,Gotta be Houston,,,NOLA hotels were
mostly wiped out,,,
They destroyed everything they stayed in here,,,
Ain’t gunna happen again !,,,Now,,,
It’s the old Sam’s and 2 old WalMarts,,,cots/hot showers,,,
But Nooooooooooooo!!! Wanted/Demanded “Private Rooms!!!”!!!
they talk about “transition” money......for crying out loud...HOW long ago was Katrina?.....I swear the Holocaust survivors got back on the feet faster than these lazy loafers....
S.A.M., Buy one for a buck and you could keep a buzz by just breathing and it WOULD NOT be from formaldehyde.
No, and I’m sure Boliver is in bad shape. But the point is the people of Galveston got up off their butts and went BACK to work!
How can they use funding that was allocated months ago to pay off Katrina victims now, if it wasn't originally in the bill? Do these people really think they can just do whatever they want?
Has he gotten the money yet? One thing about the govt, they’re a lot easier with their promises than they are with ever paying off.
Ya, that made me think of Naggin saying after Ike that people should come spend money in NOLA to stay. Ask for the “Nagin Special.”
I don’t know if he’s been paid for that or not but he has made millions $$$ off of Katrina—from hauling the trailers around! Just East of DeRidder there are thousands of trailers of trailers that can be seen from the highway.
Youknow,I’m 49,white, worked my whole life,and am dirt poor.I just divorced my 3rd cheating,lying wife,who I let have everything to avoid lawyers fees,I’ve been working in this job for 13 yrs. I’m lucky to have it now.but I sure could use one of those trailers.my friends will let me put it on their property for just the cost of utilities!(damn good friends)that way even a $20,000 a year old white guy could survive O.K., I think uncle obama should make this deal to TAXPAYERS too!!!
‘Oklahoma has some enchanting trailer parks from what I understand’
Would you care to comment on trailer parks in your state as well? Are you one of those ‘Blame Oklahoma First’ crowd? :}
damn right...
Oh, don’t take offense there neighbor, we don’t blame Oklahoma first, second, or otherwise for nothin; we Texans are proud to have yall up there helpin out with the chores and all. As for our illustrious state, everyone knows we don’t have any trailer parks atall. Just Dude Ranches.
no offense taken :} I consider Texas my sister state. If I was forced out of OK, I’d head for the Republic of Texas. I lived in Flour Bluff (Corpus Christi) some as a child. My sister was born a Texan (in San Antonio), but I forgive her. :} (only kiddin’ ‘bout the ‘blame’ comment)
