but I’d rather be safe than sorry... when the institution is still at the point of assessing the situation and trying to make sure everyone is safe

Therein lies a large part of the problem. We're so focued on safety that we cast aside Liberty. ("Those who exchange liberty for security shall have neither.") We've allowed the media to sow the seeds of distrust so much that we fear anyone who will do MORE than assess the situation. We have truly displaced the role that REAL MEN would fill, once upon a time. REAL MEN will HANDLE the situation. They will find the problem and RESOLVE it. They will not sit and wait for someone to do something more than assess and lock-down. And nothing in your post shows any interest in that kind of person, that kind of assistance, or that kind of resolution... and this on a proudly independence-minded conservative forum. We've come a long way, baby.

On my most recent trip to China, there were 5 kids in the apartment building courtyard, playing with some very realisitc looking toy guns. I marvelled at how they could be trusted with non-flourescent color toys, but we cannot trust our own children anymore. Thanks, TV.

Sad and sorry times for the US. When I was a boy we carried our firearms everywhere, so did the adults. No one called the police because they were armed also and guns were common sights. We have become a wussified country. Cowards for the most part, willing to sacrifice our freedom for false sense of safety. The truth is, if this had been a real criminal with a real firearm the police would not have been able to arrest them before they shot the he** out of whomever they wanted to shoot. They wouldn't have had the gun in the open and no one would have called the police.

People today are stupid, cowardly wimps, not all of them but a large part of them and many of the cowards are here on FR pretending to be conservatives.

IMO it’s hard to HANDLE the situation and RESOLVE it when the press vultures are broadcasting in real-time your every strategic move.

For the most part they don’t share the institution’s goal of ending the threat, and ensuring the safety and well being of those involved. They want to “scoop” the competition, get the best sound bites, have the most compelling video and all while offering real-time inane commentary.

Being caught in a robbery or threatening situation in a public place is different from being trapped in a room with one viable exit that may lead directly into danger and with no real way to see and know what is going on. Add to that the others in the room with you may be children. The standard drill to barricade the room, stay low, and try to make contact via phone & signs to give as much information as possible(what was heard/observed, how many and condition of those in the room) makes sense.

Sad to know the kids drill for that in high school. The guidelines are posted conspicuously at the college where I work.

Oh, what’s with the REAL MEN, mentioned twice. Do you not think any REAL WOMEN may be available to HANDLE and RESOLVE the situation? Do you think there are no competent women who can think on their feet and act bravely and decisively? None willing to sacrifice to save others? Frankly, I am offended.
